What are considered compounds?

When two or more elements that are combined in a definite formula, they would be chemical compounds. There are covalent and ionic bonds. To say this simply, any two elements or more which bond together would become a compound. Compounds are everywhere! You can find them in your breakfast, lunch, dinner, clothing, furniture, your body…etc,...etc

Even though you yourself is made up of 20% of carbon, you do not appear to be a diamond, nor charcoal (which are pure carbons). That’s why compounds are so interesting. When the result substance after the bond can be totally different from the original elements!

How can you tell what the compounds are made up of??

Every compound has its own chemical formula. This formula shows us the proportion of elements that are in the compound.

Table sugar is:

C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁

Here, it shows that this compound consists of 12 parts carbon (C), 22 parts hydrogen (H), and 11 parts oxygen(O)
