If there is any place that "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" continues to thrive in the young, it is Japan .. and especially in Yoyogi Park on Sunday afternoon. In America, the Gothic Look is de rigeur black .. black clothes, black fingernails (and sometime even the girls do it, as well) .. and dyed black hair. You would think that the Japanese, with their straight, black hair were born to play the part. Sorry! Then they'd look like the other 150 million on the island. So, that natural, black Goth Look is bleached away until it turns eight shades of red and ten shades of orange. Another look, of course, is shaving their hair, guaranteed to be a good way to make their parents insane .. and that's just the girls. The fashions are just unbelievable! The mix and match accessories, like a wedding dress with a dog collar and hiking boots .. or, this one .. |

| Does anyone want to attempt to explain the fashion statement here?? The red inner tube .. now, just when does that come into season?? .. in May, like the white tasselled loafers in Florida?? .. and when do you look like a complete moron for committing a major stylistic faux pas .. January?? or is it an all-season accessory? And the trailing black inner tube .. is that a dominatrix/slave thing? On the other hand, just having to ask the questions is surely a sign of one's age. | |||

After laughing myself silly over the red inner tube picture above, taken some 3 years ago, just imagine my shock at seeing this ad (L.A. Times, 2/99) for the upscale Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. There she is, a high fashion model in the ad, walking down the runway, wearing a red inner tube.
