Welcome to Our 'Hood: Shibuya

Shibuya Map #1

Pics of daytime Shibuya   make me want to grab  the next flight to Tokyo.

Growing up here was just outstanding! One of the greatest cities in the world!

Everyone has somewhere to go in a hurry in
Shibuya.  The intersections are always crowded.
But the intersections are different
than many American big cities ..

You see that everyone .. everyone ..
.. obeys the traffic signals ..

.. otherwise, the group wa (harmony)
would be disrupted ..
.. which is how these millions of people on this small island have learned to get along in a compact society.

Likewise, the cars obey traffic signals .. but
watch out for the taxi drivers!  They must've
learned their tricks from New York cabbies
There are more giant videos in this one small
part of Tokyo than in all of Manhattan.

Giant TV screens compete with giant
neon signs on the sides of buildings.
Ads, ads, ads .. everywhere you look in Shibuya
is an ad for a product, a movie or a new CD.

You have to have a map with you at all times, or you'll get lost for certain, especially since the streets are primarily marked in Japanese.  A compass might be a smart idea.

The train pulls out of Shibuya Station,
heading for Shinjuku.
The architecture is a jumble of styles,
some functional and some just weird.

The cult of personality is nowhere bigger than in Japan.  Pop music stars, movie stars, sports stars and celebrities of every stripe find their likenesses 50 meters tall on billboards and outdoor advertising .. because so many people are walking here.

Shibuya at night is a swirl
of color and activity ..
 .. it's when people bring
the town to life!
I LOVE this place!

There seems to be more neon in Tokyo than in Las Vegas, if that's remotely possible!
