Personal Log – Deanna Troi
I have encountered much in my service in Starfleet and I have encountered much and SEEN much during my duty on Enterprise. But what we encountered recently will have to go down as unique not only in my experience but in that of Starfleet annals. A living ship! Who thought … who knew that such a thing existed!
And so we encountered a 'living' ship in the Neutral Zone, which we named Tin Man. No sooner than we experienced the wonder of the phenomena than we were in a race with the Romulans to communicate with it. Our mission was to bring Tin Man into contact with a Betazoid emissary. A secret weapon if you will… and it came in the form of Tam Elbran.
Ah Tam. A genius haunted by his genius.
To understand Tam I must first explain to you about Betazeds. We are not born with the physic abilities it manifests at puberty. Yes I know with growth spurts, ache and breaking voices we must also contend with manifesting physic abilities… but we learn to deal with them the way we adjust to our dangly limbs. Not so Tam... he was born with all his abilities full blown and intact. He never had the luxury of silence. I have learnt not block out the thoughts of this crew but when emotions run strong I still struggle against the tide… what Tam experiences is a thousand times worse than that. It is a hell I wish on no one.
I feared for him.
Tam has had problems… can one blame him? Mostly stress related but he is a gifted man and I sort to help him as much as I could. Understandably the one who was able to help him the most was Data. By the very fact that he could not read Data, Tam found himself drawn to him. Ultimately the seduction of silence was too much and when Tam finally boarded Tin Man he found heaven.
Tin Man needed company and Tam needed peace. A perfect match… in the end at the risk of breaking the Romulan/Federation alliance in order to bring Tam and Tin Man together was worth it.
In My Humble Opinion.
