Personal Log – Deanna Troi

Even when we are cruising along with no crises awaiting us. Even when we are not in the thick of something extraordinary. Even then we still manage to create our own event.

Data summoned me to his lab. On the way I met Geordie and Wesley, we strode into his lab and I for one had the shock of my life when Data introduced me to his… offspring Lal. I can’t say he or she for to begin with Lal was gender neuter. It for lack of a better word was given the opportunity that no other child is given … pick the gender that you desire! I wonder what I would have picked.

Any way Data and Lal live in a world totally different to yours and mine.  He complied several thousand composites for Lal to scan and choose from.  Several thousand! Eventually Lal choose to be a human female.  I couldn’t resist saying “Congratulations Data it’s a girl!”

Watching Data with his daughter and discovering things all over again reminded me of my time with Ian.  Raising a child has to be the most rewarding experiences a person can have.  I think that is why I defended Data so strongly to the Captain.  Really!  Why should only biology define parentage!  Why not and not technology too! I wanted to howl with laughter when he told the Captain that no one else had consulted with him about procreation.  I can just see it.  Mmmm excuse me Captain Picard? I want to make love to Will Riker… when in your calendar may I?

Admiral Haftel wasn’t any better!  Imagine ordering a man to give up his child!  His attempts to assist Data in the end did not redeem him in my eyes. In fact I blame him for what happened.  Having been interviewed by the Admiral Lal left the Observation Lounge sure in her mind that she was about to be separated from her father.  She came to me and I felt emotion!  From and android!  I still don’t understand how but I did!  Just the fear of the separation from Data caused her to malfunction and eventually surfer complete neural collapse.  That’s how Data described what happened. To me a child had died.  It brought back the memories in full force of Ian. I don’t know if I cried for Lal, Ian, Data, myself or all of us.  But I mourned the loss. The entire crew did. And I blame the Admiral.

Even Will who had been away for most of the action, mourned the loss. I almost chocked on my drink as I sat in Ten Forward doing nothing more strenuous than just watching. When Riker walked in and of course he spotted Lal and made a beeline for her.  She suddenly grabbed him and kissed him!  A horrified Guinan tried to get her to put him down, but she wouldn’t. A horrified Guinan was show enough, a bemused Will is great!  But when Data walked in and demanded to know what Will’s intension was towards his daughter I wanted to roll on the floor and howl at the unfolding comedy!  Oh even now as I remember Will making the great escape I still cry with laughter.

Oh yes I for one miss Lal.
