Personal Log – Deanna Troi

Being empathic on a ship such as the Enterprise means that I am bombarded by emotions on a constant basis.  As a Betazed I have learned and from a young age too to filter out he “noise”.  As I walked down the hallway I was hit by a wave that was so strong that it felt as if I had been hit.  The emotional pain cut through the regular babble that accompanies the star ship.  I was compelled to follow.

I found the source in the brig.  A prisoner… Roga Danarquite cute actually.  He was not too receptive to my presence and the fact that I was a Counselor only seemed to irritate him more.  As we spoke I could hardly believe that this had been the source of the pain.

As I explained later to the Captain it were as if there were two personalities in there. One super imposed upon the other.  Something did not sit right and as usual were emotions are involved it is always difficulty to articulate for others to understand. To understand an emotion one must feel it words cannot and do not convey feeling. Of course the Captain’s hands were tied and there really was nothing to be done.

In an effort to satisfy myself I had Data dig around in the databanks and the story that emerged was one of horror. The Angosians are a peaceful people as personified by Roga Danar, but to fight in their wars this peaceful nature had to be overcome and was with the aid of drugs and conditioning and that was the second personality I had sensed … the soldier.  A soldier so conditioned that it took five Starfleet crew to subdue him.  In the end the veterans had come home from the wars only to be ostracized.

It eventually came down to a confrontation between the vets and the rest of the society.  As we prepared to beam down Will pulled me aside.  It should not surprise me but I admit it still does when he shows concern.  He warned me that the situation was unstable and that I should take care. With Worf heading security I did not have much concern that I would be in danger. If anything the Council was more in danger than I. He was skeptical on the point and I actually heard him talking with Worf about me. Then as we entered the transporter room he made Worf personally responsible for the Captain’s safety as well.  Not that he was not up to the challenge but it does apply pressure when the First Officer instructs you to take care of the Counselor and the Captain.

I spoke to him about that when we returned from the surface. He just shrugged his shoulders and said he was doing his job.  Where the Captain is concerned he may be but I have my doubts that Will can be too objective where I am concerned.
