Personal Log – William T. Riker
It has been said by smarter folks than I – don’t teach the one you love. Did I heed? No.
So having set the stage here is what happened. Troi having talked with Beverley Crusher and search her own soul came to me to make arrangements to take the bridge officer's test. The test is the means by which the rank of Commander is attained.
In the meantime Data had been sent on an away mission and had yet to return.
Deanna is the rare combination of brains and beauty. She sailed through the exams with not a hitch till the last one.
She took it once – failed
She took it twice – failed
She took it thrice – failed
My heart broke for her as she struggled to solve the problem. Once of the
hardest things I’ve ever had to do was stop her and fail her. I braced myself as her passion was unleashed
at me. She may deny it all she wants
but her lust for life is a gift from Luxanna.
But I digress.
It is not often that my instincts kick in. For some reason I went to the hollosuites and sure enough there she was running the final test again. I knew she wouldn’t leave it alone.
I was so proud when she solved it. She finally understood that it was about issuing orders that may get people killed. Once she put aside her Counselor urge to nurture she was able to issue the order.
We finally found Data – dead and buried. (But that’s another story) Of course we transported him back to the ship and resurrected him.
It was a good day to be First Officer.
End program.
