Personal Log – Deanna Troi
There is an ancient Ferengie story about Pandora and a box. She was told not to open it … she opened it and all hell broke loose. When she finally managed to close it back only hope and love were trapped in side. So why do I relate such a fable here? Simple. We opened Pandora’s box recently and all hell broke loose!
What actually happened was that we found a stash of android parts that were very familiar to us; OK OK they were identical to Data. So we did what we assumed to the logical thing… we assembled it! When assembled, what I will describe as an **evil** twin emerged. He went by the name of Lore.
He claimed to be the prototype and that he was the superior model to Data. That may indeed be the case, but if by superior one means condescending, sly, and unscrupulous then I for one can do without Lore.
Dr. Soon found out the hard way that Lore may have been an advanced piece of machinery but he was evil and as such the good doctor dismantled him. Not, however Lore called upon a crystalline entity. That creature arrived and whipped out the entire planet. Now here we come along reassemble Lore and as I said all hell broke loose.
Lore switched Data off, impersonated him and hatched a plot
with the crystalline entity. I watched
in horror as the damn thing came our way and we had no way to communicate with
it or maybe it was just ignoring us.
All intuition and empathic abilities failed me as I watched. My abilities having been placed on hold
Wesley’s seemed to come on line as he tried repeatedly to inform us that this
was not Data. Again and again he tried
even to the point of insubordination.
Did we listen? No! I for one
will admit here that we nearly died as a result.
In the end the young man found Data and with Beverly’s assistance reactivated him.
You know… I never knew that Data had an off switch! Mmmm you learn something new every day. Unfortunately he wanted that to be a secret. His Achilles heel as it were. Then Lore comes along and announces it on the bridge for all to hear. Family like this you can do without.
As I said at the beginning a Pandora’s Box.
