JAG HQ – ELEVATOR
“Hold it!” The DHL deliveryman shouted. “Thanks” he breathed as he and three others
entered.
“I see you are making a delivery too.” A FedEx man
observed.
“Well it is Valentine’s Day.” DHL replied under his
weight. “I see you have a big order
too.” He looked round and saw that there were four FedEx deliverymen in the
elevator each lost behind a bouquet of roses.
“I’ll tell you this she one hell of a woman or the pursuit is intense.”
“Mine too.”
Suspicion crept in. “Who are you driveling for?”
The eight men double-checked. “Lt. Colonel Sarah
Mackenzie.”
“Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie.”
“Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie.”
“Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie.”
“Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie.” The response was repeated eight times.
Before any one could comment the elevator doors opened
and the deliverymen stared at four men from UPS. “Don’t tell me let me guess.” The UPS leader said “Lt. Colonel
Sarah Mackenzie.”
“Who IS this woman!” One man asked in awe.
“Can’t help you she isn’t in till this afternoon. See you
in a moment we have at few more trips to make.”
“Same here.” DHL said.
“Same here.” FedEx echoed.
The four UPS men boarded the elevator while the eight men
in single file headed for the JAG bullpen.
“This way gentlemen” Harriet said before any could ask
for directions. Mac’s office was already taking on the look of a green house.
All work in the bullpen had ground to a halt and
speculation was running rife as to who had sent the first wave of flowers. In the face of another eight the bullpen was
awed into silence.
The JAG bullpen was known for many things… silence was
not one of them. Admiral AJ Chegwidggen
stepped out of his office to find out why the place was so quiet. “Ti…” The
bellow died as he watched the flowers walk past him. It looked like a scene from a Disney movie.
“Isn’t it great sir!” Timer gushed at the Admiral.
AJ was at a loss on how to react. He thought that he had
seen all there was to see in the place, but somehow something always came up to
top the last escapade. This one would
have the scuttlebutt machinery in over drive till next Valentine. “As I did stand my watch and look upon the
hill, I look’d toward Birnam, and anon, methought, the wood began to move.” He
quoted.
“Sir?” Tiner didn’t understand.
Neither did AJ, he stood dumfounded as over the next
fifteen minutes wave after wave of flowers walked into his office slowly but
surely turning the office of his Chief of Staff into Kew Gardens.
Finally he could watch no more. He returned to his office
muttering “Never a dull moment in this place!”

JAG HQ
Mac stepped out of the elevator and the first person she
saw was Harm.
“Hey Marine.” He greeted her.
“Hey.” She replied as she walked by.
She stopped and turned as he called to her. “I didn’t
know you were into gardening.” He said.
“I’m not.”
“Ah hah.” Was all he replied with.
“Ah hah!” She echoed, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’ll see.” He walked away chuckling.

She came through the doors and encountered Sturgis
“Colonel” he smiled at her.
“Commander.” She replied.
“Mmm… Mac.” He hesitated.
Now she KNEW something was wrong. “Out with it.”
“I take it that you are only now arriving?” He assumed.
“I had a deposition to take – why?” She answered.
“Take a look.” He led her through the bullpen to her
office. She could feel all eyes on her.
She could also see her office from across the public space. It had been converted into a green house.
She groaned.
“You all right?” Sturgis had heard the groan.
She was about to reply then changed her mind. “Come with
me.” She entered the office, hung her coat and dropped her case to the
floor. “Close the door.” She
instructed.
He complied. They remained standing as even the chairs
had been commandeered.
This…” She waived at the forest of roses “… began
February 1st “ She said.
“The flowers?” He was incredulous.
“Today flowers, yesterday chocolate, the day before a
model of a velociraptor, the day…”
“A what?” he interrupted.
“A dinosaur.” She explained.
He gaped at her. “Harm?” he whispered tentatively.
She snorted, “You think?”
“You never know… but then he only returned from Greece
yesterday.”
“I know…” She reached into her desk drawer, pulled out
some papers and handed them to him.
He read them “Thirteen e-mails here. Romantic e-mails I
may add.”
“A count down to today.”
“Did you check for today?” he asked.
“No!” She moved to access her computer but the numerous
bouquets blocked her. “Damn it” she muttered.
They placed the flowers on the floor. The computer came on and indicated
that she had fifteen messages. Mac did a quick scan and found the e-mail of the
day.
They both read it – it was an invitation for that
evening.
“Mac you can’t go.” Sturgis declared.
She glared at him “This has been going on for two weeks.
I have to see this through.” She countered.
“Then don’t go alone.” He begged.
“OK” She conceded, “Come with me.”
“Me? Why not your partner?” He was taken aback.
“As you pointed out, Harm has been away. You know the
story and I’d really prefer to contain this.” She countered off.
“Contain? Er Mac have you looked around? You are standing
in a couple thousand dollars worth of roses!” he chuckled.
“I’d better clear up this place before the Admiral sees
it.” She said.
“Too late. You were the last one to see it.” Sturgis
informed her.
“Grrr” She replied as she prepared herself to clear the
office.

Sturgis pulled up next to the area indicated by the
e-mail. “It’s the middle of February
and your secret admirer has you out in this cold?”
“Where is your sense of adventure?” She teased. “Look …”
He looked in the direction indicated, “Is that candle
light?”
“One way to find out.” She opened the door and stepped
out. He followed.
“You realize that this is where Commander Aiken was
killed?” he revealed.
“Yes.” She continued toward the light.
As she got closer she recognized the figure standing
there. She whirled in the direction of Sturgis so quickly that he stepped back
involuntarily. “You promised Sturgis!”
She hissed.
“I did and I kept to it” he defended himself. When he
realized that she didn’t believe him, he insisted, “I swear Mac.”
She turned back towards the silhouette. “Evening Harm”
She said.
“Mac… why the entourage.” He asked.
“Are you in your right mind Rabb?” Sturgis interjected.
“I know she isn’t as she was coming here alone…” He sighed “But now that I’ve
done my duty as an Officer and a Gentleman. I’ll take my leave.” He squeezed
Mac on the shoulder then turned and left.
With Sturgis gone Mac focused on the man before her. “You?”
“Me.” He confirmed.
Her military mind needed answers. “But how? You’ve been
in Greece for most of the month.”
“Collaborators whose names I shall not release. I left the gifts and the dates to be
delivered with specific instructions that the delivery was not to be seen. It just happened to be coincidence that you
were not there when the line of roses arrived.” He chuckled “The bullpen will
never be the same, folks could not believe the wave after wave of bouquets that
kept arriving. Even the Admiral came out to witness.”
“I’m glad I wasn’t there I’d have been mortified.” She
informed him. “So after two weeks of
this what now?” The woman now took over.
“Well I had a further build up in mind. Hence the snack
by candle light in the park.” He enlightened her.
“That it?” She waited for the rest.
“Actually no.” He stepped forward slipped his arm round
her waist. She knew what was about to
happen but didn’t stop it. He bent down and kissed. She responded. She loved
the man. She ‘d even told Sturgis that, how could she deny herself the kiss?
Harm raised his head and looked at her. “That talk after
the JAG-a-thon was unsatisfactory. We
need to talk and I mean talk, but not here and not now.”
She nodded her agreement. “What changed?”
“Sturgis has been on my case.” He felt her stiffen “You
ok?”
She controlled her anger… barely “Yes go on.”
“Well I’ve been pushing him and Bobbie Latham and so he
pushed back. You know how he’s always on about the tension between us? Well
every time I said Bobbie he said Mac. One day I listened.”
She relaxed.
Sturgis had honored his promise while still finding away to place Harm
on the spot. “I see.”
“I don’t think you do but you will.” He smiled. “Hungry?”
“Oh yes.” She sighed and she just didn’t mean for the
food on the table, but that would do for now.
