HARM’S ROOM
The old man pulled on the cigar.
He was a handsome man and he still bore the military bearing that
shouted that he had been in the service.
He was relating one of his stories as usual and it always involved her.
“She was an amazing woman.” He related. “Can you believe that she followed me to Chechnya in a taxi?” He nodded vigorously.
“She did!” He insisted.
He leaned back in the lay-z-boy. “She was engaged to some Auzzie but she was my friend and she came to help me and eventually my brother.”
He got misty. “I never thanked her for that.”
He got silent and wistful and then suddenly he came back to life. “Mac was a Marine. She could break down an M-16 in ten seconds flat, and what a lawyer! Hell what a woman!”
The cigar had gone out and his hand trembled as he lit it again. “I gave up these damn things… but hell a man needs a habit. Nasty or not.”
He suddenly got secretive “You know I loved her. But in those days we were in the same office and I thought I knew best. Damn she nearly married another man and I still held my tongue. Me hot shot lawyer and former Naval aviator tongue tied before a female Marine.”
He shook his finger. “I tell you solemnly the female of the Marine Corps is more deadly then the male. Mac could, reduce you tears in at least three languages that I know of and dress to kill.”
He suddenly squinted at the mannequin. “Who did you say you were?”
Of course there was no answer but he didn’t mind. He launched into another story. Rumor had it that he lost it when he lost the love of his life.
Must have been some love.
