SUNDAY 1835 LOCAL
AJ CHEDWIGGEN’S RESIDENCE
MACLEAN, VA

AJ Chedwiggen’s opened his front door to find General Sarah “Mac” Rabb at his door.  “Well if its isn’t the JAG herself about time you got here.” He admonished.

“Good evening AJ. Reporting as ordered.” She smiled at her former CO.

“Where is that husband of yours and your kids?”

“La Jolla.  I join them later in the week.” Mac explained.  “So how is retirement?”

“Mac I am going stir crazy.  Francesca has been at me to visit her in Italy and I’m about ready to go.”

“Do it AJ the break will be good.”

“I’m already on break… I’m retired.  Wait till it’s your turn. He chucked as she pulled a face at him.  “So how is JAG anyway.”

“Being the first female Judge Advocate General gave me a buzz at first but now it’s a job I love and I do it with no more fuss than when you were the JAG.  This week Harriett has been clearing the place of closed cases to forward to the Archives.  The cases we have gone through are unbelievable!”

“You mean like the two midshipmen dueling in Washington Park?”

“Who would believe… two Naval Academy students dueling in a park because of family history that reached back to the Civil War!”

“The one for the history books is the firing of the HNK in the Court.  I knew Rabb was a loose cannon I just never expected him to go off in Court.” AJ said.

“He certainly got the Court’s attention on that one.”

“I hear folks went ducking left and right.”

“What is it with the Navy and duck?” Mac wondered.  “I had to put Harm straight on that.”

[Flashback]

Harm: I wasn't being cute.  I was being funny.
Mac: Yeah, like the way you fired that HNK in court?
Harm: Well, I thought it was pretty funny when you ducked under the table.
Mac: I'm a Marine, Harm.  Marines don't duck.
Harm: What do Marines do?
Mac: They take cover, but they never duck.

[End of Flashback]

“Come to think of it my ever loving husband has been a royal pain.” Mac confessed.

“Glad you know that.” AJ said “The usual?” He held up a glass at her.

She nodded. “Remember the court-martial of John Farrow for defying orders and rescuing his men who are being held and tortured by a Haitian warlord?”

“Yeah.” He handed her the drink of tonic water with a twist of lime.

“He locked me out completely.”

[Flashback]

Mac: You've been running this case without me from the get go.
Harm: I knew you were emotionally involved.
Mac: When have my emotions ever stopped me from doing my job?
Harm: Well, they certainly did not stop you today.  Nice save on that side bar.
Mac: Thank you.
Harm: Maybe I did not give you the benefit of the doubt.
Mac: No, you didn't.
Harm: Well, I know one thing.  I'd rather have you on my side than opposing me.

[End of Flashback]

“I agree… you are a hell of a lawyer Mac.  Seems you and Rabb had some interesting times on those cases.”

“Yeah Harm said that once… I think.”

[Flashback]

Mac:  "She's good.  I'll give her that.
Harm: "Yeah, she is good, Mac. You're better than she is."

[End of Flashback]

“JAG may have been many things but dull it was not.”  AJ said.

“Not for me anyway.  AJ you gave me some cases that defied all reason.  Take that distasteful task of representing that Marine Farmer” She could still feel the foul taste in her mouth “… and there was Harm giving me pointers. HA!”

[Flashback]

Harm: So where's the problem anyway?  You fry the guy's legal smarts in court; hope you dent at least one judge's sensibilities, win your appeal. All in a day's work!
Mac:  Fry the guy?
Harm: Yeah, the original counsel---- we know the other counsel.
Mac:  Cdr AJ Chegwidden.

[End of Flashback]

“Consider those cases character building.  You have to be able to argue all sides of a case. Remember that there are three truths.  Yours, theirs and THE truth. Sometimes we get it and some times we don’t.” AJ lectured her.

“Hence the turns at Acting JAG?” She asked.

“Didn’t hurt did it.  In fact you did a damn good job if I recall.”

[Flashback]

AJ:   (to Harm) Well, I didn't read your name in any police blotter.
Mac:  Sir, the Commander was actually a model citizen.
AJ:   How come he obeys you and not me?
Mac:  (laughing) Lucky, I guess.

[End of Flashback]

“You do realize that his compliance had nothing to with luck. The man was completely lost and in love with you by then.  In fact by my reckoning he was lost the first day he laid eyes on you.”

“Hence your comment that day?”  She arched an eyebrow at him.

“My comment?”

“UH huh the **Don't get too familiar.  You've got to work together.** comment.  Don’t play dumb.”

“I call them as I see them.” AJ reclined further into the couch.  “Did I ever tell you about an adultery case of mine?”

AJ had told the Rabb kids many stories and she had eaves dropped but this one did not sound familiar. “No I don’t think so.”

“I was a Commander at the time and a request came in for assistance from the JAG corps… and to hear him tell it”

Your honour

I was inside the closet

Minding I and I own business

Your honour

It was a complete stranger

Causing these disturbances

Him claim say me touch him wife

Which is a wicked and awful lie

Me two them was occupied

Me shirt in me left hand me pants in me right.

Me two them was occupied

Me shirt in me left hand me pants in me right.

Looked at AJ in disbelief. “That was a letter to the JAG?”

He held up his hand is if taking an oath.  “I kid you not.”

“It seems to me that by his own admission he was guilty.” Mac observed.

“It got better. He then wrote to the Judge.”

Dear Judge

Can this Court accept this story from me heart

Why Judge?

If by change you don’t believe me tale

Ask him why she will not fail to agree I was a better man than he?

Just in case she refuse to answer

Ask de maid downstairs Agatha

She’ll only be too glad to testify for me

Mac got suspicious “AJ you are kidding me.”

“I am not.” He was adamant.  “I am serious and so was the Private.  Getting nowhere with the first two he had one last resort.  He wrote the guard.”

“The Guard.” Mac giggled but from the glance he gave her she sobered up.

Dear Corporal

As you lock me in this prison

Pray for I

Please Corproal

Please don’t leave me hear to wonder

Why de Court has made this blunder

Grant me for a crime that wasn’t here!

Corporal

When you going to send me dinner

Send you mother or you sister

One more day of this I cannot bare

“So what happened in the end?” She asked.

“He did his time and I became Admiral.”

Mac was still suspicious “AJ you are pulling my leg.”

“I am not!” he protested.
