RABB'S RESIDENCE

Mac's antenna had gone up. Harm had been away for a week and had got home late last night.  They were still in bed when he made a dash for the porcelain God.

He finally emerged.

She licked her lips nervously "How long have you been sick?"

"The whole week I've been gone."

"Oh God I'm pregnant." She almost wailed.

He moved swiftly to her side. "First we don't know that and second it doesn't mean we'll have a repeat of last time. Have faith sweetie." He tried to comfort her. They had lost their first child and they were both scared.

"Harm..." She said.

"I know I know the odds are that we are preg..." He ran to the bath again.

Mac groaned.

I believe for every drop of rain that falls a flower grows

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows

I believe for everyone who goes astray someone will come to show the way

I believe, I believe

JAG HEADQUARTERS

Having secured the morning off at short notice Mac arrived at JAG and headed for her office.  As she placed her case down her buzzer went off.  Tiner informed her that the Admiral wanted her ASAP.

"Enter" AJ called, he watched her cross the floor and come to a stop at his desk. [She's pregnant] he spotted. "At ease have a seat ... congrats Colonel?"

She shook her head "How you do that I'll never know." She said. "Yes. Seven weeks... confirmed this morning."

"... and your husband how's he taking it?"

"As sick as the first time." They both chuckled at the thought of Harm bearing Mac's morning sickness.

"Have a case for you." He passed the file.  "A Doctor at Bethesda is accused of marking a patient inappropriately while in OR and is being sued.  "You will defend the good doctor the patient has hired a civilian attorney."

"Aye sir."

"Any questions."

"Marked sir?"

"You'll see." He said "Dismissed."

"Aye sir." She walked out.

MONTH EIGHT

The months came and went with the Delaney case causing her grief, and she had gone through the months with mounting fear.  It was in her eight month that she had lost her first child. She had come close to insanity.  Should it happen again she knew there would be no return, she had barely made it back the first time.

Harm had no case to distract him and as month eight had approached he held his breath. He was scared.   He had no control over this. He couldn't help. Scared was when he had gone down in the MiG in Russia, even later off the Patrick Henry that was fear.  This ... this was terror.

I believe above the storm the smallest prayer will still be heard

I believe that someone in the great somewhere hears every word

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky

Then I know why I believe

JAG HEADQUARTERS

Instinct had told Mac to let Bud take the lead on the case and she had been right.  This was ridiculous.  Dr. Zackery Delaney had been so proud of his work in OR that he had taken a surgical knife and carved "Z" on Lieutenant Carly Aames daughter of Major General Charles Aames.  The Aames' had changed Attorneys three times the latest was poor Alan.  There had been accusations of jury tampering, the press was having field day and the Judge was threatening a mistrial.

She and Bud sat in the office of the Judge Advocate General and waited for the tirade to start.

"Colonel! Can you explain to me WHY this case is taking so long to be resolved!" AJ thundered. "I have General Aames on the phone every other day, the SECNAV every day and the press crawling all over the place!"

There was silence in the office.

"Well!" He bellowed.

[This is my eighth month I don't need this] Mac thought.

"Sir do you wish us to list the reasons?" Bud asked.

"No Lieutenant." AJ calmed down "I am aware... what I need is an explanation of why a simple case as this has dragged and is there an end in sight?"

"Truthfully sir, I'll probably give birth before this case is resolved." Mac confessed. "My client has a God complex and will take no advice. The Lieutenant is no better on the advice front and is on her third Lawyer... the judge is threatening a mistrial. Sir ...It's a circus."

"Mmmm ... suggestions?"

"Negotiate" Bud said then paused.

"Go on." AJ encouraged.

"Well sir the Colonel and I have been on the case for months. No amount of toing and froing by us has worked. We make recommendations but never in that time have the Doctor and the former patient come face to face. You could make that happen."

"I can."

"You can." Mac said.

AJ got up and stood at the window in his favorite position: arms folded. "Lieutenant place the file on my desk. Your suggestion may just work. Dismissed."

"Aye sir" They chorused.

"Oh Colonel?"

She turned

"When does your leave start?"

"Tomorrow sir."

He nodded and prayed [God be with you.]

JAG HEADQUARTERS

The news had come that Mac was in labour and the entire office functioned on pins and needles.  Harriett suddenly realized that she had been praying. She knew exactly what Mac had gone through with the loss of HR.

At 1546 all military decorum was lost as Tiner came through the bullpen like a bat from hell.  "It's a boy! The Colonel had a boy!" he grinned. Someone seeing him may be forgiven if they thought he was the father.  The grin was pure pride.

The place erupted in joy and relief.

AJ's door flashed open but no one noticed.  He gave them a few more seconds then, "OK people this is a Military Office not Macy's Christmas Parade."

A difficult command to give.

A difficult command to follow.

And although the place calmed down there was still a distinct energy in the place.

AJ returned to his office and offered a prayer of thanks.

THE END.
