MAC’S APARTMENT
Mac opened the door to allow Harm in. She planted a quick kiss on his lips and headed to the kitchen. “Give me a minute.” She threw back at him. “I was about to give Jingo his heartworm medicine … won’t be long.”
He closed the door and replied over the music “I can’t believe you name every dog you own Jingo.”
“… and why not?” She was back with the subject of the discussion in tow; a one year old black Labrador.
“Hey” Harm tickled behind the dog’s ear and got a soggy lick for his gesture. “You ready?” He asked the mistress.
“Yep.” She switched off the CD player.
“What was that you were playing?” He asked. “It sounded vaguely like Christmas music crossed with dance and was that French I heard?”
She put her coat on, over her dress uniform and replied, “It’s Caribbean music. A Martinique group called Kazzav.” She was ready. “Jingo be good.” And the two walked out the door.

VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL
Harm parked his SUV and escorted Mac out and they headed for the wall. As usual there were people paying their respects.
“When I think of the controversy that surrounded the design and construction of this landmark.” Mac pondered.
“Yeah and now it brings so much comfort.” Harm agreed. “A simple concept - a wall with names. Who would have thought it would have such an impact.” They were walking down the path.
“Simple ideas usually carry the most force as they are understood the easiest.” She replied.
“Here we are.” They stood at the point in the Memorial where the name Lieutenant Harmon Rabb was engraved. They stood in quiet reflection. “There was a time I came here every year to renew my promise that I would either find him or find out what happened so that he could rest in peace.”
“And now?”
“Now I come to reflect on the past year and plan for the next.” He explained. “Folks around here know that I’m mad. Not think they know, as there have been times I came here and ranted at him about you.”
“Me?” she was surprised.
“You think the love I feel for you arrived full blown? What we have is like a great wine … it took time to develop and mature. But while all that was happening I would come here and complain to him about Dalton and especially Brumby.”
“You are kidding me right?” She asked.
“I kid you not. I remember the December of 2000 before you were to marry Brumby in the following May. I came here and argued with great logic with my Dad as to first why you should not marry and second why I could not get involved in your business.” He confessed.
“Did Dad answer?” She chuckled.
“Nope.” He smiled.
“Mmmm.” She pondered.
“So I just sat here and cried.”
“Harm you never fail to amaze me.”
He grinned at her and said, “This year though has been a great one. Our relationship has gone from strength to strength and the future looks even better.”
“Unlike this time last year when we had forces in Afghanistan.” She replied.
“Yeah. Glad that is over.” He sighed. “Thanks for coming with me Mac.”
“It was an honor and a privilege.” She assured him.
Harm stood a little straighter and faced the wall “Dad I finally got my act together and as amazing as it may sound this is Lieutenant Colonel Sarah MacKenzie… Mac to everyone. This sir is the woman I love and have bent your ear about over the years. Guess what? She loves me too… doesn’t that beat all?” He turned to Mac “Sarah … meet my Dad.”
Mac was touched, she had met Harm’s mother the year before but never expected this. She took it in stride and said. “Sir… hope you don’t mind if I call you Dad too. It is a pleasure to meet you. Through Harm I feel as if I know you. And true it has been one long and winding road but I do love your son.”
He smiled at her and she smiled back. All was right in the world.
He snapped to and she followed his lead. They saluted Lieutenant Harmon Rabb Sr. and the other fallen soldiers turned on their heel and left.
