Harm breezed past Mac.
"Good evening to you too." She said as she watched
him at the entertainment center.
"What are you looking for?"
"This" he said triumphantly. "Heard this on
the raido today and I couldn't get it out of my mind." He looked round.
"Where is every one?"
"Out to a game with Bud, Harriett and AJ."
"Good. Come list Mac. Only you can
appreciate." He slipped the CD in
and fiddled with some knobs. Music flooded the room.
She smiled as she recognized the intro. "Lordie there's a song from my
youth." And she sat next to Harm.
"Every verse could be written for us. Listen."
========================================
In a
little while from now
If I'm
not feeling any less sour
I
promise myself to treat myself
And
visit a nearby tower
And
climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an
effort to make it clear to whoever
What
it's like when you're shattered
Left
standing in the lurch at a church
Where
people saying: "My God, that's tough"
"She
stood him up"
"No
point in us remaining"
As I did
on my own
Alone
again, naturally
========================================
He hit pause.
"I didn't leave you in a lurch at the Church." She
pointed out.
"A mere technicality."
"Harm I collapsed!
Had to be rushed to hospital that does not count as being left in a
lurch at the Church." She reasoned.
"True, but I just want you to know that had you married
Mic and not me I may have climbed that tower.
I was already contemplating some such folly."
"All that based on my failing to arrive at the
Church?"
"Bud was having kittens and I wasn't far behind. I had loved you for so long and messed up
so bad that being so close and yet so far was all too much." He said.
"Your own damn fault and no one else's."
He grimaced and allowed verse two to play.
========================================
To think
that only yesterday
I was
cheerful, bright and gay
Looking
forward to who wouldn't do
The role
I was about to play?
But as
if to knock me down
Reality
came around
And
without so much as a mere touch
Cut me
into little pieces
Leaving
me to doubt
Talk
about God in His mercy
Who if
He really does exist
Why did
He desert me?
In my
hour of need
Alone
again, naturally
========================================
Mac looked at Harm, he was definitely in a mood. This song had touched a nerve of sorts.
"... and this part?"
"When I went back to flying, I really felt that I was
destined to fly. That it was a role I
was born to play. But as the song puts it, reality came round and knocked me
down. When I cam back to JAG that
reality cut me to little pieces cause we'd lost ground and Mic had stepped
in. I really did feel that God had
deserted me."
"Harm that was so long ago. Why bring it up now?"
"Songs do that." He hit play.
========================================
Looking
back over the years
And
whatever else that appears
I
remember I cried when my father died
Never
wishing to hide the tears
And at
sixty-five years old
My
mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't
understand why the only man
She had
ever loved had been taken
Leaving
her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite
encouragement from me
No words
were ever spoken
And when
she passed away
I cried
and cried all day
Alone
again, naturally
Alone
again, naturally
========================================
"No! Harm your mother, she's not..." Mac couldn't
even form the words.
"No! No! She's fine."
Mac relaxed. "I
remember when you found out about your father. You did cry and didn't hide
it."
"I'd been searching for so long. Mum had to relive the whole thing again with
the question of why the man she had loved had been taken."
"And when she passes away ... you'll cry and cry all
day." She paraphrased the song finally understanding the links.
"But you'll be there." He said.
"Naturally." She opened her arms and Harm cradled
his head in her lap and stretched out on the sofa.
"I love you Sarah."
"I love you Harmon."

Mac slipped out of their room and headed for the CD
player. She checked ... yup the CD was
still in place.
She needed to understand this. She adjusted the volume
control and hit play...
