Mac was exhausted and her head was splitting. It had been a BITCH of a day.  Being Chief of Staff at JAG had its advantages - today was not one of them.  That being said she picked up her case and headed for the door.

Home time!

Now she had to face part two of the day.  To face two energetic kids and a husband.  If she could beat the traffic and get home before the madding crowd then she could catch some time alone in the tub.  Just herself and silence ahhh her definition of heaven.

Home time!

Honey came in and she caught me red-handed

Creeping with the girl next door

Picture this we were both butt-naked

Banging on the bathroom floor

How could I forget

That I had given her an extra key

All this time she was standing there

She never took her eyes off me

The Gods love me Mac thought as she had indeed beaten the traffic and had made it home in record time.  Then groaned may be the Gods don't love me Harm was home already there was his vehicle.

After seven years of marriage Mac and Harm had got into the groove of married life.  The grind of marriage had taken over the romance of it. Having a five year old and a three year old did not help get the pizzazz back either.  {We need time off} she thought. She decided that if they could get the Roberts to hold the unholy terrors for a weekend ... she and Harm needed to plan a get away.

She unlocked the door "Hi honey I'm home."  There was no reply but there were sound effects.

Familiar sound effects.

From the bedroom no less.

"Oh God don't stop!" a female voice came through.  The voice sounded to familiar to Mac.

A male voice groaned.  That voice she KNEW.

{Curiosity killed the cat} she admonished herself as she moved toward their bedroom.  She stood in the doorway not knowing what to do, not believing what she saw.  There in her bed was her husband with another woman doing things to that woman she had assumed were reserved for her as his wife!

A piece of Mac died and she just stood there till it was all over. So engrossed were they that they never saw or heard Mac till the deed was done.  Harm rolled off the woman.  He eyes made contact with that of his wife's and he gaped like a fish.  He made an attempt to speak but continued to gape.

Mac shifted her gaze from her husband to his mistress.

"Good afternoon Mac." Renee said simply.

Mac walked out.

Mac was too stunned to think.   One thing Mac would NOT do, however, is abandon her children.  She jumped in the vehicle and headed for the day care to get her kids.

{Where shall I go? Somewhere Harm will not track me!}

MOTEL BY THE BYE

After an hour of driving and having the Cathy cry all the way for her Daddy Mac finally pulled into a motel.  At least the older of the two David was silent and observing for now.

As they settled in for the night ... son of Rabb struck.  "Mom where is Dad?"

She looked at the five year old and sighed.  "Mom and Dad have had a very bad argument and we need time to cool off." That was as close to the truth that she could get.

"Daddy?" Cathy asked.

"Soon sweetie, soon. Now time for bed."

"Mac!" Harm finally found his voice.

"Get dressed."  He ordered Renee.

He rolled out of the bed, got dressed and ran to the front door, just in time to see the vehicle round the corner.  He fell to his knees and ried.

Renee stepped over him and left.

THE NEXT DAY - 0900 LOCAL

JAG HQ

FALLS CHURCH, VA

Lieutenant Tiner approached the office of Colonel Mackenzie with the fear of God pounding in his chest.

"Colonel?" he squeaked.

Mac signed loudly. "Tiner if you come in here one more time with a message from Captain Rabb I shall place you on report.  I informed you that I am taking no messages.  Take a note and at the end of the day I'll collect." She had not even bothered to raise her head.

"It's not a phone call." Her head snapped up at the sound of Harm's voice.  "We need to talk."

"Dismissed Tiner." After he left "Get out." She said with complete lack of venom.

"Mac if you won't deal with me, we have kids.  We need to discuss what happens to them."

He had her in a corner.  She could not deal right now the wound was too raw.  Added to that she was at work.  "OK" she conceded.  "I'll have Mrs. Carter hold the kids and I'll come over around 1900."

"Thanks."

She didn't reply.

Harm had been pacing the floor for half an hour before she arrived ... punctual as usual.

"Say what you feel you need to say." She said as she waltzed into the house.

"You are not making this easy."

She looked at him.

"Mac this is not like you ... rant rave kick my six.  But say SOMETHING!"

The strategy had not been planed but the effects could not be denied.   The reality was that she was so shocked by what she had seen that she was numbed.  She really had noting to say.  She truly felt nothing.  From loving this man, the father of her children to feeling nothing.  Maybe one day she would feel again but for now the coping mechanism was to feel nothing. And being in that waking coma seemed to have been the best way to deal with Harm.   He was inflicting upon himself a far worse punishment than she ever could.

"Say what you feel you need to say." She repeated.

"I'm sorry." He said.

She looked up. "That it?"

"No excuses.  I met Renee after all these years and we went to bed.  I was crass enough to bring her here."

Mac stared at him.

"I'm sorry." He repeated "I love you I need you and the kids.  Don't leave me Mac."

"I need to think."

"Ok. Ummm look.  I'll move out to the BOQ and you and the kids come back here."  He saw her stiffen.  "OK may be that was not such a good idea."

"No it's alright." She said. "The kids need the least amount of disruption as possible."

"I'll move out tonight so that you can return ASAP."

She shrugged "What ever."

"I'm sorry." He said again.

She shrugged and repeated "What ever."

But she caught me on the counter

"It wasn't me"

Saw me banging on the sofa

"It wasn't me"

I even had her in the shower

"It wasn't me"

She even caught me on camera

"It wasn't me"

She saw the marks on my shoulder

"It wasn't me"

Heard the words that I told her

"It wasn't me"

Heard the screams getting louder

"It wasn't me"

She stayed until it was over

THREE MONTHS LATER

SUNDAY - 1100 LOCAL

RABB'S RESIDENCE

Harm slowly undressed her removing most of the clothing. Mac's face morphed into Renee's and she jumped from her sleep.   These dreams had haunted her for weeks.

Mac had graduated from walking coma to walking zombie.  Harm had the kids for the day and she was home alone.  I need to break this cycle she finally realized and burning the bed had not helped.  She got up, dressed and headed for the shooting range.

SUNDAY - 1300 LOCAL

LOCAL SHOOTING RANGE

If there were a category beyond expert to be achieved Mac would have attained it that day.  She spent the next two hours shooting "HARM".  The shots were deadly accurate and not a bullet missed the intended targets of head, heart and groin.  In some instances numerous shots penetrated one bullet hole.  She used rifle, handgun and semi automatics.

Maybe it was the jerking of the semi, maybe it was just time, but for what appeared to be no reason Mac crumbled to the floor and cried.  The dam had finally burst.

The assistants on duty knew Mac and knew all was not right, so had hovered under the pretense of keeping her armed with hardware.  Due to the time of day her section of the range was empty and there was no one to see a Colonel Sarah MacKenzie break.  The assistants made sure that no one saw.

She cried for broken trust. She cried for the loss of a marriage and a friendship and most of all she cried for herself.

She collected herself at last and turned for home finally ready to deal.

SUNDAY - 1700 LOCAL

RABB'S RESIDENCE

Cathy announced the arrival of the gang.  "Mommy Mommy Mommy ... where are you!"

"Right here pumpkin!"  Mac replied as she scooped up the three year old.

The wise one spotted the difference and asked, "You not mad anymore Mom?"

She looked at her husband, as she replied to her son "No."

"Oh good.  Can Dad come home now?"

Again she looked at Harm, as she answered her interrogator "Yes. Now take your sister to the kitchen for a glass of milk." To Harm "I assume that you fed them on some rabbit stuff."

"I fed them." He confirmed he was admitting to nothing else. "Were you serious? I can come home?"

"Yes. I was serious you can return to the house to the kids and to my bed.  One day we will talk about this Harm; but not today and not tomorrow."

"OK" He would agree to anything to get his family back.  "I'm sorry Mac.  I do love you."

"I catch a repeat performance and I WILL shoot you.  She ... I will let walk. You ... I will kill."

Harm nodded for he knew she could and would.
