ac was bushed. The Mission has been a hard one and even if she’d opted for hot chocolate over coffee she was too tired to wait for it and had crashed on the sofa.
Sturgis emerged from his kitchen with coffee and the hot chocolate. He placed the cups on the table. “I see she didn’t make it.”
“Out like a light.” Harm grinned as he accepted the offered cup.
“Hot chocolate?” Sturgis was still put off by that.
“Seems that when she is too wound up the coffee just makes it worse… the caffeine and all that.” Harm explained as he watched the Marine sleep.
Sturgis watched Harm watching Mac; he made a decision and acted on it. “Harm do you love her?”
Harm was taken by surprise. “What kind of question is that?!” A good offence is always the best defense.
“An honest one. Now answer me.”
“None of your damned business.” He snapped.
“True.” Sturgis conceded “But I cling to our friendship and repeat do you LOVE her?”
“Why is my love life of such interest to you?”
“It just is. Now don’t try to change the topic.” He stared at his friend.
Harm was cornered and gave in. “Yes.” He confessed. “But don’t tell her.”
Sturgis was exasperated. These people claimed to be adults. “Why?”
The walls were down and now the confession flowed. “I have no idea how she will react.”
“Let me see if I understand this. You love the woman but you don’t have the gonads to tell her?”
Mac heard the last part of the conversation and shocked the men by stating “Oh for God’s sake Harm get a grip. If you love this woman tell her!” She stood. “Sorry I fell asleep there.”
A stunned Sturgis managed to stutter, “Its ok.”
“That right?” Harm’s eyes bored into her. How much had she heard?
Even as her heart broke she nodded and put on a brave face. “The way I see it you are facing two types of hell: the one of not knowing how she feels and the one of knowing exactly how she feels. Personally I’d like to know.” She held his look refusing to look at Sturgis as she handed out advice. She chuckled nervously “But then no one asked me for my opinion. That my Hot Chocolate?” She reached for it. “Not so hot.” She headed for the kitchen to place it in the microwave.
As soon as she turned to leave Sturgis glared at Harm and widened his eyes. Harm shrugged. Sturgis threw his arms up into the air.
Mac returned to find the two men in a funk. She sipped from her mug and looked from one to another. “I miss something?”
Sturgis gurgled.
“Sorry?” She grinned, “Repeat in English please?”
“I will become a mental case or an alcoholic!” He suddenly declared.
Mac needed no further translation “I’ve had this for nearly ten years. Think how I feel!”
“How do you feel?” Harm pounced.
She chortled, “Speak to my lawyer here.” She indicated Sturgis.
“We plead the fifth.” Sturgis stated.
“We do?” She asked.
“We do.” Sturgis assured her.
“We do.” She told Harm.
The two Officers turned and faced Harm.
“OK… OK… I love this woman and I have no idea how she feels and I’m scared.”
Mac pulled a face. “I can understand scared.”
“You have not a clue. She’s licensed to kill.” Harm explained.
“Harm.” Mac signed. “I seriously doubt that there is any woman out there; killer or no who will behead a man for confessing his love for her.”
“And there you have it.” Sturgis slapped the table.
Mac’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. “I’m missing something here and I’m not sure I want to know what.”
Harm took the plunge. If Mac were to do him grievous bodily harm at least Sturgis would take him to the hospital. “It’s you.”
“Me? What about me.”
“Strength father.” Sturgis muttered.
A light went off in her head. She focused intently on Harm. “Oh no sir. You have to do better than that!”
He fidgeted; maybe an audience wasn’t such a good idea. “I love you.” He whispered. When she provided no reaction he cleared his throat and repeated in a firmer voice and added. “The question is … do you feel the same?”
Harm held his breath.
Sturgis held his breath.
No one moved for what seemed like eternity.
“This whole conversation was about me?” She couldn’t believe it. It was overwhelming. She finally got a grip of herself. “You love me you say.”
Harm nodded still unsure.
She stepped forward and placed the mug onto the table. Maintaining her bent angle she turned her head and said softly to him “About time.” She stood, grinned and winked at Sturgis who grinned back.
Sturgis stood to leave and as he reached to threshold he took a quick glance back and smiled as he witnessed the two kiss.
All would be well.
