USS ENTERPRISE

Commander William T. Riker First Officer of the USS Starship Enterprise, the flagship of the Federation of Planets, had just come of bridge duty and was in search of Commander Deanna Troi, Counselor to the crew of the self same ship. He taped his communications badge. “Computer locate Counselor Troi.”

“Counselor Troi is in her quarters.” The system informed him.

He stepped into the trubo lift and headed for her quarters.

Will pressed the buzzer to his girlfriend’s rooms. There was no reply.  He pressed again. Still no reply. On the off chance that she has stepped out while he was making his way there he requested her location again.

“Counselor Troi is in her quarters.” The computer repeated.

He buzzed again. Again no response.

“Computer – security over ride: Riker Alpha Omega 9-1-1”

The Computer accepted the code and the doors opened. He stepped in not knowing what to expect but braced for the worse.  What he faced was anti climatic; She had fallen asleep with a personal digital assistant in her hand. He removed it, glanced at the text, leaned over and kissed her. He then sat back and watched as the kiss registered.

First she gave a slight frown, and then stirred. As she opened her eyes she projected a thought [Imzadi?] Being no telepath he replied vocally “Who else but your soul mate would be kissing you awake?”

“How’d you get in?” She was fully awake now.

“I was concerned so I over rode the security protocols.” He explained.

“Ah…” She sat up “you’ve eaten?”

“No came straight here.”

“Well you know where the replicator is ... help yourself.” She said.

He returned with a tray and sat opposite her. “I see you are reading the e-novel I gave you.” He observed.

“That’s not the one you gave me. You lent me We The People. This is Boomerang.”

“Already! Are you skipping?!” he was shocked.

“Of course not! Skipping the stories would spoil the time line. Which novel are you on now?”

“The same. “ He replied. “I stopped for you to catch up. That way we could discuss the same novels.”

“Aww that was sweet of you.” She moved to sit closer to him. “What do you think of the stories so far?” he was curious.

Six weeks before Riker had been searching the computer database for something to read.  He was not in the mood for anything energetic or interactive.  A book sounded like the solution. There in the database were a series of books called JAG by Donald P. Bellsario. There were over one hundred and fifty titles. He began reading one called JAG: We the People. He was now ploughing through the titles like a termite in untreated lumber.  One week into his read Deanna had found one of the novels and now she too was hooked.

“I like the cases they investigate and the court room battles…”

“But” he prompted.

“But the pathetic way that two lawyers cannot express their feelings is ridiculous!”

He nodded; “Have you finished Boomerang?”

“Yes I particularly enjoyed AJ’s non judicial solution to Harm and Mic’s breaking of Bud’s jaw.  Bud was right they were fighting over Mac. The case was just a backdrop for that play.”

“Then there was the ferry.” He smiled.

“Ferry times two.” She groaned.

He slapped his forehead. “First Harm then Mic. Maybe you see us in there?” He offered.

She looked at him amused. “Oh so you’re an analyst now?”

“No… but it took time for us too.”

“PLEASE…” she snorted. “It’s not the same. When you and I boarded the Enterprise we were already exs these two have no romantic history.”

“What about We The People and Death Watch?” he countered.

“The Diane thing?” she said “Are you saying that me loving your clone Tom is the same as loving you?”

“Point.” He conceded.

“Listen to this…” She picked up the pda, searched through it and finally settled on the offending section.  She read to him.  “Harm looks up at a bridge and changes the subject “You know they wrote eternity on this bridge on New Year's Eve?”

Mac glares at him “Is that how long we're going to wait?”

Harm hesitates “Mac...” she cuts across him, “ We're not in Washington any more, we're not even on the same continent.”

“That doesn't change who we are.”

Mac can’t believe what she just heard. “Most men would disagree with you.” She points out.

Harm agrees with her “I know, I disagree with me sometimes too.”

“But you still can't let go.”

“Not yet.” He replies.

“Your just like this with me aren't you?” she realizes.

“Yeah, only with you.”

“I suppose I should be flattered.”

“You should Sarah. “ Its not often he uses her given name and it makes the moment even more poignant.“

+             +             +

Deanna flung the pda at Riker.  “Empathic I may be but I have never claimed to understand the thought process of any male. It this accurate?”

Riker paused for a moment and thought.  “Duty, career, charges of fraternization all had to be going through his mind.  Of course it could just as easily have been a case of bad timing.”

“Which brings us to the second ferry scene.  Give me that.” She reclaimed the discarded pda and again quoted.  "I'm in love with you, Sarah," he says. "Shhh..." he places his hand lightly over her mouth to keep her from interrupting. "For once in your life just listen. I've loved you since the moment I first laid eyes on you. I've never acted so foolishly or ached so hard in my heart in all my life." She attempts to stop him with a kiss, but he holds her back. "No...let me finish, please; while I've got the strength." She nods. "I knew that getting you to love a knocker like me would take a miracle." He looks up into the star laden sky and she turns to look up, too. "Look-" he points. "I'm praying one will fall from the Southern Cross tonight," he slowly brings up a diamond ring into her line of vision. And she giggles.

"Oh, God. Ah...it's impossible, Mic," she says.

"No. Once you would have said me holding you in my arms under the Southern Cross would be impossible," he denies.

"You're right," she remarks.

"I mean, I know it won't be easy," Mic acknowledges. "God knows we got a lot to work out: Your career; mine; but I'm willing to make any sacrifice...any...if you'd just be my wife."

+          +          +

“So explain that to me. One moment she propositions a man and the next she a has another man’s ring.” Riker challenged.

“Classis case of rebound.” Deanna replied.  “Mac had declared to Harm who had replied in the negative.  Then comes Mic offering her all that she desired: a man who loves her a family in her emotional state she could not resist.” She chuckled.

“Something funny?”

“Us.”

“I don’t follow.”

Deanna explained, “Here we are in a heated debate over two characters from what can best be described as pulp fiction. Mind you not contemporary fiction but four hundred year old fiction... how in incongruous is that!”

Riker smiled. “I’m sure you have an alternative past time in mind.”

“Indeed I do.” She winked at him, stood up and headed for her bedroom.

He followed her.
