Lifeline (Season 6) Quotes

Harm: What I want most is to never lose you.

Opening Scene
Mac: "Your Honor, Commander Rabb has failed to produce sufficient evidence to lead a reasonable person to conclude. . ."
Harm: "Your Honor, Counsel is not an expert on what reasonable people conclude."
Mac: "To lead a reasonable person to conclude the chain of command was compromised. Therefore the defense moves that this court enter a finding of 'not guilty' on the charge of fraternization."
Harm: "Your Honor, Ensign Leland testified that he told Lt. Bayer that he loved her. She should have reported it immediately to her CO."
Mac: "She counseled him like a good officer should."
Harm: "She led him on. He believed they had a relationship."
Mac: "Well, they did-- a working relationship. Anything more was in Ensign Leland's mind."
Harm: "Come on. The little glances, the innuendo, the intimate conversations."
Mac: "All in his mind. He mistook kindness and friendship for romantic interest."
Harm: "Kindness? Is it kind to let somebody believe you love them when you don't?"
Mac: "Of course not. But that is not what-"
Judge: "Counselors!"

Out on the Admiral's porch waiting for Renee
Harm: "I guess I never pictured myself celebrating your engagement."
Mac: "Did you expect me to stay single forever?"
Harm: "I don't know what I expected. You've been a surprise to me from the moment we met. You remember?"
("We the People" Flashback)
Mac: "The look on your face made the hair stand up on the back of my neck."
Harm: "Imagine how I felt. You were Diane come back to life. The resemblance was uncanny."
Mac: "Sometimes I'd catch you looking at me. I knew you were seeing her."
Harm: "She meant a lot to me."
Mac: "So I gathered."
("Death Watch" Flashback)
Mac: "I figured that's why you resented me at first."
Harm: "Because you look like Diane?"
Mac: "Because I wasn't Diane."
Harm: "Mac, I never resented you."
Mac: "You didn't like me."
Harm: "*You* didn't like *me*. I at least tried to be friendly."
Mac: "Friendly? You torpedoed me our first time out."
Harm: "You're too thin-skinned."
("Heroes" Flashback)
Mac: "I was this close to taking that cigar and. . . (laughs) You were unbelievably rude."
Harm: "I was rude? You compared me to a bilge pump."
Mac: "A bilge switch... and you deserved it. You were so full of yourself."
Harm: "I believe that's called self-confidence."
Mac: "I believe it's called being a jerk."
(They laugh.)
Harm: "You're just a sore loser."
Mac: "No, I was new. You could've gone easier on me."
Harm: "Go easy on you? I was the one who needed protection."
("The Good of the Service" Flashback)
Harm: "You had a personal relationship with the officer we were investigating."
Mac: "And that bothered you."
Harm: "What bothered me was your bias."
Mac: "So, not the relationship?"
Harm: "Your personal life is your business."

(Break, then we come back and they're still waiting outside for Renee.)
Mac: "Maybe you should call her."
Harm: "Nah, I'll give her another couple of minutes."
Mac: "So, we got off to a rocky start. At least it's all behind us now."
Harm: "Is it?"
Mac: "Of course. We have a trust, an understanding. You don't think so?"
Harm: "No. . . No, I do. However, you didn't trust me during the investigation of Jordan's death."
Mac: "I included you."
Harm: "Yeah, only so you could keep an eye on me."
Mac: "Are you okay about Jordan?"
Harm: "Yeah."
Mac: "Harm, you should really talk to someone about it."
Harm: "I do. I talk to Renee."
Mac: "Oh. Did you know that Jordan believed you'd only be with her till I decided I wanted you?"
Harm: "She told you that?"
Mac: "Funny thing is, I half believed it myself. Until that night in Sydney Harbor."
("Boomerang II" Ferry Flashback)
Harm: "We were cruising on the Titanic that night, huh?"
Mac: "And you steered us away from the iceberg. Why did you back away?"
(Renee arrives, interrupting them.)

(Harm sees Mac going outside and follows her.)
Harm: "You okay?"
Mac: "Yeah, I left my purse."
Harm: "You're not upset?"
Mac: "No. Why would I be upset?"
Harm: "No reason. As long as you're okay." (He starts to go in.)
Mac: "Hey. As long as you're out here... You never answered my question. Why did you back away?"
Harm: "Complications."
Mac: "Such as?"
Harm: "Well, for one thing, we work together."
Mac: "You were worried about our professional relationship?"
Harm: "Mac, personal issues were already affecting our work."
("Silent Service" argument flashback)
Mac: "I offered to talk it through."
Harm: "Some things are best left unsaid."
Mac: "That's your MO--running away."
Harm: "I wasn't running away. I didn't wanna jeopardize our friendship. Did you?"
Mac: "Back there in Sydney Harbor I would've said, 'Yeah, let's risk it.'"
Harm: "Well, you wouldn't be having your engagement party right now then."
Mac: "Maybe I would."
(They look through the window where Mic and Renee are.)
Harm: "Nice to see everybody getting along together."
Mac: "You should hang onto that one. She's good for you."
Harm: "Yeah, I'm beginning to realize that more and more."
Mac: "Good. 'Cause she wouldn't give you up so easily."
(Harm thinks about his Mac/Renee boxing dream.)
Mac: "Harm?"
(He snaps out of it.)
Harm: "You know, I don't think Brumby would give you up without a fight either."
Mac: "No, he wouldn't. He's stubborn. You and he are alike that way."
Harm: "Hey, easy on the insults."
Mac: "Hey, this is the man I'm going to be spending the rest of my life with."
Harm: "It's okay with me if it's okay with you."
Mac: "Is it? Okay with you?"
(Flashback to the end of "Boomerang II".)
Harm: "It's not up to me who you spend the rest of your life with."
Mac: "So it's not okay?"
Harm: "I didn't say that. I just. . . I don't know why you had to go to him so fast."
Mac: "So fast? I've waited. And I've given it a lot of thought, probably more than I should've."
Harm: "I know. Only we had a deal."
("Yeah, Baby" Flashback)
Mac: "I think that contract is null and void."
Harm: "Why? It still has three years left to run."
Mac: "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
Harm: "You love him?"
Mac: "Do you love Renee?"
Harm: "I'm not marrying Renee."
Mac: "We should, uh, we should go back in."
Harm: "Do you love him?"
Mac: "That's not a question you get to ask." (She turns to leave)
Harm: "Mac?"
Mac: "What?"
Harm: "You forgot your purse."
(He hands it to her, and as they touch, Mac gets quite flustered.)
Mac: "I- I should go back inside. It's my engagement party."
Harm: "Yeah. Hey, you're cold." (He gives her his coat.)
Mac: "Thanks."
Harm: "Mac, I'm sorry. I was outta line."
Mac: "Never apologize. It's a sign of weakness."
Harm: "Whatever you and Brumby have between you, that's uh. . . that's your business."
Mac: "Whatever's between us? I'm marrying the guy. What do you think is between us?"

Mac: "I want you to be happy for me."
Harm: "I am happy for you."
Mac: "Really? I'd hate to see you when you disapprove."
Harm: "I don't disapprove, Mac. I'm just raising questions."
Mac: "When did you become my caretaker?"
Harm: "You save a person's life, it makes you responsible for them."
("Full Engagement" Flashback)
Harm: "Saved you little green Marine butt that day."
Mac: "You're the one that put it in jeopardy in the first place."
Harm: "Ah, you still owe me."
Mac: "Oh, I paid you back. Two years later in a place called Panama."
("Colonel's Wife" Flashback)
Harm: "You're saying you took down the drug dealer?"
Mac: "Just as he was about to shoot you."
Harm: "That's not how I remember it."
Mac: "Your memory's a little off, just like your aim."
Harm: "Oh really? Well, my aim was good enough the day you tried to persuade the Admiral to take you back."
Mac: "I did persuade him."
Harm: "With my intervention."
("People vs. Rabb" Flashback)
Mac: "Your intervention almost scuttled me."
Harm: "Hey, what counts is intent."
Mac: "What was your intent in helping me come back to JAG?"
Harm: "I didn't wanna break in a new partner."
Mac: "Ah. If you think about it, Harmon, you actually owe me."
Harm: (laughs) "How do you figure that?" (a pause) "Russia."
Mac: "I- I didn't mean to bring back bad memories."
Harm: "No, you're right. You were there for me."
("Gypsy Eyes" Flashback)
Harm: "You have always been a good friend."
Mac: "A friend?"
Harm: "Well, what would you call it?"
Mac: "I don't know. You've seen me at my best. . . my worst. You've always been there for me too."
Harm: "Not always."
("Stalker" Flashback where Mac gets drunk.)
Mac: "Walking away was the right thing to do."
Harm: "It wasn't easy."
Mac: "I think sometimes that's how you help a person the most."

Meanwhile inside. . .
Mic: "I wouldn't worry about it, love."
Renee: "Hmm?"
Mic: "I wouldn't worry about it."
Renee: "I'm not. What do you suppose they're talking about?"
Mic: "Probably. . . us."
Renee: "What does Mac think about me?"
Mic: "She likes you."
Renee: "No, seriously."
Mic: "She does. She told me."
Renee: "Oh. . . that's bad."
Mic: "Why?"
Renee: (starts to get up) "I'm gonna bring them in."
Mic: "Renee, that's the worst thing you could do. I'm going to have Sarah for myself for the rest of my life. You'll have Harm. Let 'em spend some time together, alone. Say their farewells. There's no worries."
Renee: "You know, you're not as thickheaded as you seem. No offense."

Mac: "I want us to stay close."
Harm: "Your husband might have something to say about that."
Mac: "My 'husband'."
Harm: "Kinda brings it home, huh?"
Mac: "Mic's a good man. He's good for me. I wish you would like him."
Harm: "I do like him. I liked him from the start. We all did."
("People v. Mac" Flashback where Bugme and Harm are about to go at it.)
Mac: "He had to say that. He was defending his client."
Harm: "He was right."
Mac: "About me being guilty?"
Harm: "No. About some people being in love with you." (He walks away.)
Mac: (following) "What did you just say?"
Harm: "That Brumby was right."
Mac: "About some people being in love with me?"
Harm: "Yeah."
Mac: "What people? (pause) What people?"
(Flashback to end scene from "Touch and Go")
Mac: "When you look at me that way, what do you see?"
Harm: "I see a desirable woman."
Mac: "And I see a man who's so afraid of losing control."
Harm: "Hey, you lose control in my world and you die."
Mac: "You're not flying a Tomcat now. You don't need that lifeline, let it go before it becomes a noose."

Mac: "You look so sad."
Harm: "Don't feel sorry for me, okay?"
Mac: "Wouldn't you be happier if you could just let go?"
Harm: "Your problem is you let go too easily."
Mac: "This isn't about me."
Harm: "No, it is about you. The moment a man shows interest, you're ready."
Mac: "You're droppin' chaff, Hammer. Nice diversionary tactic. You almost got me goin'."
Harm: "It's not a diversionary tactic, Mac. I was there when Brumby asked you out the first time, remember?"
(Flashback to the end of "People v. Mac")
Mac: "He knew what he wanted and he went after it."
Harm: "And he got it."
Mac: "Yeah. By the way, he did apologize in a very charming manner. Your problem is that you make simple things complicated."
Harm: "You make complicated things too simple."
Mac: "What do you want?"
Harm: "I want a lot of things."
Mac: "What do you want most?"
(Harm thinks back to seeing Mac walk out of his shower in nothing but a towel, from "Retreat, Hell".)
Mac: "Harm?"
Harm: "What I want most is to never lose you."
Mac: "I promise you, no matter what happens, you won't lose me."
Harm: "Why did you go to him so quickly?"
Mac: "You pushed me away. What was I supposed to do?"
Harm: "Wait."
Mac: "For how long?"
Harm: "As long as it takes."
(Goodbye scene from "Goodbyes".)
Harm: Hey. (Wipes tears from Mac's face.)
(Tiner comes out.)
Tiner: "Sir, Ma'am, the Admiral's asking for you."
Harm: "Thank you, Tiner. We'll be right in."
Tiner: "It's getting chilly out here."
Harm: "It is getting chilly, Tiner. We'll be right in. Thank you."
(Tiner goes back in.)
Harm: "Well, we should go in."
Mac: "I know."
Harm: "Mac, you have someone who will always love you."
Mac: "And you have somebody that loves you."
(They kiss, slowly at first, then it gets more passionate. Mac then breaks the kiss, hands Harm his jacket, and turns to go.)
Mac: "We're getting too good at saying goodbye."
Harm: Deep sigh

AJ: "You can have your official promotion first thing Monday morning, in the office. I am sure Lt. Roberts would love to do the honors."
Harriet: "Thank you, Sir."
(Harriet hugs Bud, while everyone claps and cheers for her. Harm and Mac touch each others hands in an affectionate way.)
AJ: "So, lets cut the cake."
(Harm & Mac have this blank expression on their faces, like kids caught with their hands in the cookie jar. The show ends with them staring forward.)
