SPECIAL TOPICS JOURNAL
Main Topic: In this section, we learned about the morality and immorality in business, war, and medical issues. We examined different scenarios and what we thought to be the moral decisions that would best solve problems in each of these three areas.
Three Important Ideas: from Just War--Discrimination and Proportionality play big roles in how wars are fought. Discrimination is distinguishing between civilians and real soldiers and refraining from attacking the innocent bystanders and only targeting those who are fighting you. Proportionality is the idea of the goals and the achievements of fighting being greater than the losses of life, materials and money. from Medical Ethics-- Doctors use the same decision making processes like the OPTION/LISTEN methods to decide how to treat patients. They consider options, talk to the family and each other for more info, pray to God for guidance, and consider the obligations given by the Hippocratic Oath from Business Ethics--"If the overall goal is profits, does it matter what you do to get to your goal? In other words, What is the difference between Carl Icahn and Jim Goodnight if their goals for profits are the same but their methods differ? Is one more moral.? I think yes. We have to look at the Action, Intent, and Circumstances. They have the same circumstances and intentions in that they are both leaders of big companies and both want to make a profit. But what sets them apart is not only their actions but also the results of their actions. Both men's actions lead to them meeting their goals and they are both legal. But Jim Goodnight wants to make his employees happy while Icahn doesn't care about them and basically uses them to make himself rich. A SIDE NOTE: I don't think anyone can call themself a "corporate raider" and feel moral about that title! |

A QUESTION:If America's legal system is not based off of morality, why follow it? or what is it based off of? I think that the legal system is not ideal by any means. It is not moral either. I think it really just provides us for an efficient society and a mostly safe society with its rules.
A way I can be a better, more moral person: By understanding the ethics in these three areas, I think I will be able to live a more moral life. By knowing what is moral in the various situations I can know what I should do and how to advise others. |
