This week in class we discussed Eric Clapton and Deion Sanders and how their stories can be examples of Metanoia and how they relate to the stories of Socrates and Icarus and Daedalus, as well as the Blind men and the elephant, and Plato's "allegory of the cave". We learned about the "Five Foundational Lessons" and how they explain the way we live our lives, the important beliefs we have and about critical faith decisions. One thing I was surprised to learn was the truth of one of the lessons. "I see the world through colored lenses and I am necessarily and unavoidably biased." I didn't believe I was biased at first but after Mr. Sciuto explained to me that I can't help that I am biased because I am a white male who lives in St. Louis, I am seventten and I go to SLUH, I cannot relate to other people and am therefore biased to some extent. I also learned what Hubris is. Hubris is excessive pride in yourself that offends others and even God. This may be a reason why someone might not learn from a mistake. One question I have after this week's class is: "Are there other foundational lessons that can be made about life and how people live?" One way I found I can become a better, more faithful person is by reflecting on stories such as Icarus and Daedalus, or Plato's allegory of the cave and applying them to my own life in order to learn the lessons they convey more effectively. |
