"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do, and what I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do." -Dr, Tom Dooley (1927-1961) ............................................................ Dr. Tom Dooley was born on January 17, 1927 in St. Louis Missouri. He attended St. Louis University High School. After graduating from high school in 1944 he attended Notre Dame for his undergraduate studies and then joined the Navy. Soon he was honorably discharged and was free to start his own project in Vietnam. In 1954 he helped the navy to transport Catholic North Vietnamese refugees to a new state in the South. Through this work he gained support and popularity which brought him financial backers as well. He also earned a lot of money by book sales from his best seller, Deliver Us from Evil He was then able to go to Laos to build a clinic for Vietnamese refugees. He tended to the poor, sick, and abused refugees and gained popularity throughout the Vietnamese population. His patients nicknamed him "Dr. America". Through his work he was able to cofound an aid program called MEDICO in 1958 which helped people in Vietnam, Cambodia and other places. Dr. Tom Dooley was a great man who truly lived out the idea of being "a man for others". info obtained from the prologue of, Dr. America: The Lives of Thomas A. Dooley, 1927-1961. |
