Superman Retur |
|
|

From the familiar soaring score made immortal by John Williams to the incredible cinematography to the rounded and full performances by all the actors, Superman has truly returned in a large way. It is almost impossible for the silver screen to contain it. This is a film not to be missed at the theatre. |

I've had the great opportunity to view the film twice in the first week and it only got better the second time around. Five years after Superman II, Superman returns from space in the hope that Krypton, his place of origin, may somehow have survived and realizing he cannot return there, seeks to rekindle his life on Earth. Unfortunately, time and people have moved on and he must find his way back into their hearts and lives, even the ones who don't want him back like Lois Lane and Lex Luthor for different reasons. Not only is this story compelling from an action perspective, but we get to have a hero, alien by nature, find his most human thoughts. |

Anyone who loved the first two films will find something here. Some may say that the film treads closely to the originals, but the charm of the film is that it ties so closely to them from the music to the shots to the character realizations. Brandon Routh finds a soul to Superman, someone who could do pretty much anything, but chooses to find a human side to his life. Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor is compelling because he finds a balance between humour and sadism that is key to the character, creating someone who we laugh at in one brief moment before we learn the serious nature of his actions and become afraid. Kate Bosworth, playing Lois Lane, exemplifies the woman who has her heart broken, but unwilling to stop for any man to reclaim her life. |

Bryan Singer has already saved one comic book adaptation with the X-Men and does the same here with Superman Returns. He relishes the fan of the comics with his humanistic side of being an alien and yet pleases a film fan by creating a truthfulness to his predecessor. He doesn't want us to forget the original; Singer wants us to exalt it and remember how great it was. Superman Return helps to truly finish off a trilogy with added story to make a fourth of true quality. I have rarely been moved by a comic book film before. This film with its romanticism and soul got to me in more ways than most films ever do and that is a rare quality of a blockbuster. It is a large film with a much larger heart and the perfect way to spend a beautiful summer night at the theatr |

(Viewing Note: See this film is the regular film capacity, not a digital copy. Many of the flying scenes are very hard to see with the digital print and my second viewing with a regular film print was much better.) |
