Beginners Tips

Before you start there are a few fundamentals we need to get out of the way. If you're gonna be king of this classic, you can't afford to make any silly mistakes.

When confonted by two zombies, a lot of people make the mistake of shooting the one on their side of the screen first. But this gives the closer zombie a chance to attack, so instead first take out the sucker closest to you.

If an enemy on screen is throwing things, your first priority is to shoot the projectile. Do this quickly, then cap the zombie that threw it so he can't do any more damage.

If you want to take down an enemy quickly in HOTD2 you should try to hit his head. Not only is a headshot worth more points, it also kills most enemies instantly.

Learn the levels. This sounds obvious, but you'll be surprised how much easier a level becomes when you know where every bad guy is going to pop up.

Practice Makes Perfect

Hone your skills using the Training Mode. It test your reactions, aim and rate of fire. Remember that if you can't fire quickly enough you can always use the pad trick. Tips for three of the more difficult missions follow....

In thiis mission you must kill 10 zombies with only 30 rounds and two lives. Accuracy is the key here. Take time to aim for their heads. And remember not to fire until you see the white's of their eyes!

This mission is deigned to improve your rate of fire. To stop Judgement you must hit him a great number of times. Hit him before he reaches you and dies. You my have to resort to using the pad here.

The final mission has you shooting a coin to keep in the air for a set time. This requires accuracy and fast reactions, because the coin is unpredictable.

Judgement Type 28

You might think Judgement is the huge axe-weilding monster, but he's not - that's his minion Kuarl. Judgement is actually the little winged demon, who flies around the screen, hiding behind his big mate, the wuss.

The giant actually takes little damage, so it's best to concentrate on Judgement himself. The two share an energy bar, and you should notice that it goes down much faster when you hit the demon. Don't ignore thebig fella, but try to pepper the demon as well.

ather than follow the demon around the screen, fire at the giants chest, and often Judgement will fly through your line of fire. If he stops moving, it means the giant is about to raise his axe, so shoot the little guy to avoid taking damage.

After taking about three quarters damage, Judgement loses control of Kuarl and attacks on his own. When he flies left and right, fire just off-centre to the right; When he flies up and down, fire off-centre towards the bottom. Victory will soon be yours.

Tower Type 8000

Tower is a five-headed Hydra-like monster.Four of these heads take turns to attack you. Watch out for the telltale charging around the mouth.

Wait until Tower charges up to attack before shooting it in the mouth. You can hit it at other times, but then you risk the chance of running out of ammo when you need it most.

After you hit each head twice it falls off and dies. Once you've destroyed four, the main head tries to escape.

To avoid getting hurt, fire rapidly at the open mouth as it rushes at you. If you cause enough damage it backs off and tries again.

Original Mode Power-Up

Throughout the original mode, there are power-ups that you can't afford to ignore. Once you know where they're located, it's not difficult to pick them up.

On the second level, shoot the zombies off the car and quickly blast the rear doors of the van. They open and you get a good item, often the sub-machine gun.

On the third level, you see a civillian on a boat being attacked. Shoot the zombie, then after the cut-scene a power up should appear.

Secrets

So what exactly does happen if you finish the game or save all the hostages?

If you get 80,000 points or more you get the special ending, and if you finish the game with a zero as the last digit of your score, then you get a different one.

So what's the point of all those civillians - apart from getting in the way? Well, if you save all the hostages you reach a secret bonus room on the last level.
