Chapter 5 Journal

1. One main idea stressed in this chapter is that of being called to take risks. There are many examples of this throughout the chapter. The first of which is Mary. Mary took a big risk in deciding to follow God's plan for her and be the mother of God. She didn't know what would happen but agreed to do it anyway. Jesus also is shown to have taken many risks throughout Luke's gospel. Jesus risked to challenge social boundaries of his time to make points and teach his disciples. Prayer, says Luke, gives us the courage to stand up and take risks for Jesus. It helps us be closer to God and understand what he wants for us. Cesar Chavez also took risks. He gave his time to try to help others. He wanted better working conditions for farmers like himself so sacrificed in order to help them. He did and the risk proved well worth it.

2. The first thing I want to remember from this chapter is the feeding of the five thousand. This was the only meal and miracle of Jesus recorded in all of the gospels. The rules for table fellowship were disregarded as well as who served the meal. This miracle reminds us of the Eucharist and challenges us to continue Jesus' mission of nourishing the hungers of our world. I want to remember this because it is an important part of Luke and all the gospels and can help us understand Jesus better.

The second thing I want to remember is Luke's use of history and geography. Luke connects events in his gospel other things going on in the world and shows how Jesus affected all of the world. For instance, he says that a world census was the reason Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem. He also connects events of the Gospel to world leaders. I want to remember this because understanding writing techniques used by Luke can help me to better understand his gospel and help me read it better.

4. What was it that drove Luke to give women such a prominent role in his gospel?
