Chapter 3 Journal
1. The main idea stressed in this chapter is that of being called to be like Jesus. This is expressed through Matthew's gospel. It gives us His life and sayings so that we have the opportunity to know of Him and try to be more like Him in every way. Through the values of Jesus mentioned in this chapter we learn how He wants us to act. The kingdom of heaven is mentioned. This tells us how we need to be in order to further the kingdom and eventually enter it. The Pax Christi also helps us be more like Jesus in helping to reach peace in soceity.
2. One of the things that I want to remember from this chapter is that Jesus' values are countercultural. The values of Jesus as stated in the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount are much different than how we would naturally act. Jesus is calling us to show our commitment to Him and treat others as He wishes. They stress love, justice, and compassion. I want to remember this because it helps me remember the Beatitudes. I can almost just think of the opposite that would happen in society today.
Another thing I want to remember is the infancy narrative. Matthew and Luke both had infancy narratives in their gospels. They both had Joseph as a descendent of David and that Jesus was raised in Nazareth. Although, they do have their differences. Matthew includes the visit of the magi in his narrative. Also, Luke throws in that Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem for the census. I want to remember this because I get mixed up about who wrote the infancy narratives. I need to remember them because they are an important part of the Bible.

4. What caused Matthew to decide to write for Jewish Christians?
5. Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization that provides affordable, decent houses for poor families all around the world. It was founded in 1976 by Miller and Linda Fuller. Since then they have provided the poverty stricken with over 200,000 houses worldwide. This is a very important organization in my mind. Without a house what can a family do? Not much. This organization has given so many people the opportunity to have worthwhile lives and is truly inspirational. I hope that they keep doing what they are doing and making people's lives so much better.
