Journal 4Q1

Journal 4Q1 1. While I had heard and talked about the Sermon on the Mount before, I had never put that much thought into what it really meant to follow the teachings presented there. After our questionnaire, I found that while I do make some good decisions and act as Jesus would want, I also make other poor decisions. Through our discussion and reading of the Sermon on the Mount I realized just how much Jesus is really asking us to do. I can't imagine turing my cheek if someone hit me or being willing to break up a fight in front of all my friends. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount is truly portraying an ideal morality. In the future, while I might not be able to fully live up to His expectations, I hope to improve as much as I can.

3. The first thing from this section that I want to remember is the Catholic Church's view on subsidiarity. The Church believes that instead of directly giving people solutions to all their problems, it is more beneficial to empower them to help themselves. This idea is summed up with the quote, "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for the rest of his life." I think this is a great approach to take toward helping people. Ensuring that they do in fact receive the aid and support they need, and also giving them the knowledge and ability to help themselves for the rest of their lives.

The second thing I want to remember from this section is Dr. Martin Luther King's final speech in Memphis. I am truly amazed by Dr. King. He dropped everything he had to do, a substantial amount I'm sure, just to come support the garbage workers' strike their. In addition, he does this knowing the danger he puts himself in by appearing in a location with such tension already. Dr. King made a brilliant speech, in which he indirectly confessed that he believed that he soon would die. He was, in fact, assassinated the very next day. I am awestruck at the incredible faith and strength of this man. To be able to put your life on the line for total strangers as often as he did, knowing the danger he was putting himself in, is simply amazing. Dr. King is surely someone to be honored and idolized. He gave his life for the betterment of others. I hope that one day I can dedicate my life to helping others too.

4. One question I have for myself is, How would I have reacted to Jesus if I had lived in his time?

I wonder whether I would have put my faith into this poor preacher just as so many people did. Would I have been a doubting pharisee or a hopeful and spirt-filled disciple? Would I mock those that followed this lunatic? Or would I die in the collesseum for preaching His word? I wonder whether I would believe in Jesus if I hadn't been raised on his teachings and brought into an already huge Church of his. I hope that I would have recognized this man for what he truly was and had the faith to follow his teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount. I feel that I can partially answer this question with how I decide to live my life and how I look for Jesus today.
