Journal 3: Jesus' Morality
1.     The key idea about the Morality of Jesus presented in this section is in his teachings of the Beatitudes. These eight teachings say Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, Blessed are the Sorrowing, Blessed are the Lowly, Blessed are the Hungry and Thirsty, Blessed are the Merciful, Blessed are the Peacemakers, Blesseda re those Persecuted for the sake of Righteousness, and Blessed are the Single-Hearted.  This part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount seems to be the epitome of what he asks us to do.  I also like them because they lead us to examine ourselves, wonder how we could live them out, and wonder why Jesus would choose these virtues.  Afterall, they seem more like hinderances and things we would avoid most of the time.

  2.     Three of the most important ideas that I would like to remember from this course:
First, is C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity" article.  His theory of "the Law of Human Nature" I really felt like I could understand and connect with.
Second, is Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.  I especially like his teachings about what the Commandment says, and then what he says.  It seems very strange that he was probably crucified for these very ideas.  They still make complete and perfect sense, but the fact that he was defying Mosaic Law is what got him in trouble.  However, I think that this radical teaching can still apply pertinentaly to our world today.  One of my favorite of his teachings is about enemies.  He said, "Love your enemies and pray for your prosecutors."
Finally, I would like to remember the movie "Weapons of the Spirit."  Those people's audacity to do the things they did, hiding those people, really amazed me.  And what's more, they didn't hardly think anything of it.  They didn't even worry that what they were doing was dangerous, or could get them in trouble.  Their biggest issue was to keep these people safe from the Nazis.  I think that people today could really learn from this.  It seems that now we are so in tuned to what will benefit us the most, not how we can help other people.  That fact, that they just helped the Jews in France, risking everything they owned, really inspired me.
The Beatitudes
4.     What does it mean to be a Christian?
To me, being a Christian is one who believes in Jesus and his teachings, and tries their very best to conform to them.  By my definition, I would like to think that I am a Christian, but I cannot wholly agrre that I am due to the fact that I don't always try my very best to follow Jesus' teachings.  I, like many others, tend to take the easier way out, rather than follow what Jesus teaches, in the beatitudes for example.  I do not even know Jesus' teachings well enough to the point where I could totally follow them, and this comes back to the lazy concept again.  I can't explain why, but perhaps I should make it my lentem promise to expand my knowledge of his teachings and try to live them better and more fully.

  5.     To try to make myself a better Christian, I could take more times studying teachings of Jesus' like the Sermon on the Mount, and then taking what I learn from them, and attemp to live them more full yin my everyday life.
