Dyea to Dawson

Centennial Ultra-marathon to the Klondike

The Dyea to Dawson Centennial Ultra-marathon was held only two years (1997 and 1998) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the rush to the Klondike. June 8, 1998 fifty-four teams from eight countries started out from tidewater at Dyea and crossed the Chilkoot Pass on their way to Lake Bennett. Each team had two members, and each person was required to carry a minimum of 55 pounds. Teams then paddled 100 miles of lakes and 500 miles down the mighty Yukon to reach the finish at Dawson. There were four nationalities represented in the first three places. The second and third place teams were separated by only 12 minutes after 600 miles. Team #36, 'Faded Glory', Dixon and Crangle from Seward, Alaska placed 33rd after having managed to pass three other teams in the last 20 miles of the race upstream from Dawson.
