At Your Own Game...

August 3, 1999

I feel the wind billow in your hair
Just like my fingers tips that try to linger there
I feel your lips, so soft to the touch
As they release me from their gentle clutch

And I wonder how can this be
When the one you are with, has never been me
Is there something I'm failing to see

I don't want to look
Open another book
I do not want to share
So I try not to care
Isn't there another way
You know how to play
And when your game is done
Will you have had your fun

Seems like only yesturday I had you in my arms
Protecting you from all who would do us harm
With you, I tried to release all my control
And now I must figure out some way to pay the toll

How the hell could I have known
After all those hours on the phone
I'd be the one left here on my own
Little did I suspect
You would become the one object
I would have to learn how to regret and to reject

Now my friends tell me it's all for the best
In the game of life this was just another test
They say in time I'll find somebody new
But unfortunately
If and when I find somebody
I'll only remember you

I didn't ever want to look
(don't look back)
I'll open and read another book
(or attack)
I never wanted you to share
(watch another dawn)
It's not my problem I don't care
(and just go on)
Can't you learn some other way
So I don't have to go and pay
For everything that we have done
The game is over, who said that it'd be fun

The only way you'll set yourself free
Is to find what makes you truely happy
Try living on your own for a little while
Only then can I be there to see you smile

There's something there in the future for us
Only in this, for now, can we trust
Friendship like ours I'm told you never lose
But at this moment
When you close your eyes
You're looking to the sky
And at this moment, it's time for you to choose

I don't want to look
Open another book
I do not want to share
So I'm trying not to care
Isn't there another way
You know how to play
And when the game is done
Will you have had your fun
