THE ISLAND CENTRAL RAILWAY Doug Devine’s contemporary version of CP Rail’s former Saint John, New Brunswick line is the ISLAND CENTRAL. With major rail facilities in Saint John and McAdam, a long mainline and lots of staging tracks, operators of this railway enjoy a wide range of activity. Fast bridge line traffic, VIA’s ATLANTIC, AMTRAK’s DOWN EASTER, mainline wayfreight, branch locals and lots of terminal and industrial switching are all part of the mix. A crew can quite happily become engaged in operating one of Saint John’s six yards and not see the rest of the railway for an entire evening if wished. This is a big railway. As in the real world of Southern New Brunswick, the ICR handles large quantities of international container traffic to and from Canada’s East Coast ports, petroleum products from a huge refinery, numerous products to and from five pulp and paper mills, domestic automobiles and a lot more. A fleet of ancient mostly GP-40 and 38 locomotives is maintained to haul much of this traffic assisted by run-thru units from CN, CP RAIL, Guilford Maine Central and on rare occasions NS. Having had the first model rail laid in 1969, the ICR has a history in its own right. The current version has been around since 1984 and the recently refurbished model of Saint John’s Union Station, since 1985. But this railway is constantly changing. and improving. Finishing touches are being put on the CN yard in Saint John. Soon the rebuilding of the Gagetown branch terminal will be completed, and then there is a more exact copy of the McAdam station begging to be built! Model railroader visitors are welcome at the Island Central. Advance arrangements advised. Beware though, visitors are expected to run trains and minimal visit length is one and one half hours! |
