THE NATIONAL TRUST/GIANT'S CAUSEWAY SPILL VASE
THIS VASE (#1224) WAS ONLY AVAILABLE AT THE GIFT SHOP OF THE NATIONAL TRUST, FORMERLY LOCATED AT THE GIANT'S CAUSEWAY IN COUNTY ANTRIM, NORTHERN IRELAND. THE VASE COMES WITH STANDARD 7TH, 8TH, AND 11TH MARKS. THE NATIONAL TRUST IS A MAJOR CHARITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1895. THE NATIONAL TRUST RAISES FUNDS TO PRESERVE NATIONAL PARKS AND LAND THROUGHOUT THE U.K. THE NATIONAL TRUST OWNS 612,000 ACRES OF FARMLAND, WOODS, FORESTS, AND MOORLANDS, AS WELL AS MORE THAN 200 HISTORIC HOUSES AND GARDENS. THE GIFT SHOP OF THE NATIONAL TRUST WAS LOCATED ON THE CAUSEWAY HEAD OF THE GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, WHICH IS ON THE COAST OF COUNTY ANTRIM, NORTHERN IRELAND. HOWEVER, THE SHOP BURNT DOWN ON APRIL 30, 2000. THE CAUSEWAY IS GEOLOGICALLY UNIQUE BECAUSE OF HEXAGONAL COLUMNS OF BASALT THAT WERE PUSHED UP THROUGH THE EARTH'S CRUST MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO. IT FORMED AS IT WAS COOLED ONCE IT REACHED THE WATER. THUS, THE HEXAGONAL SHAPES THAT APPEAR ON THE VASE REPRESENT THE BASALT AND THE ROCKY FORMATION IS THE CAUSEWAY HEAD. THE NATIONAL TRUST BOUGHT GIANT'S CAUSEWAY IN 1961 TO ENSURE ITS EXISTENCE. ROUGHLY 750,000 PEOPLE VISIT THE CAUSEWAY EACH YEAR. WHAT TO DO WITH THE OLD GIFT SHOP IS STILL A SUBJECT OF CONTROVERSY.
