Animal Totems
Some forms of Reiki encourage the practitioner to get in touch with and communicate
with his or her Spirit Guides. Spirit Guides can present themselves to us in many ways.
One way that many have found useful is as Animal Totems. This information is provided
to help those practitioners who are interested in learning more about this and doing this.
It is not a recomendation of one form of Reiki (or one set of beliefs) over another.
Beliefs vary on how many Totems each person has and how long these totems stay with us.
It is commonly accepted that each of us has at least two totems, one walks on our left side,
guarding and guiding our feminine energies, the other walks on our right side, guarding and
guiding our masculine energies. Some believe that we have as many as nine Totems, and that
the two main ones (walking on our left and right sides) are with us for all our lives.
Most believe that Totems come and go throughout our lives, staying with us through certain
periods of our life, when we need their guidance and then leaving.
Totems do not have to be exotic animals. Each animal has magic and wisdom, the important thing
is to find the animals that we can learn from and that can guide us, no animal is better or worse
than another animal. We know our Totems by instinct, perhaps they are an animal we have always
been fascinated with, we feel an attraction to them through our lives, they may even appear to us
in our dreams. If you meditate you can ask the Totems to appear to you during your meditation.
The animals choose the people that they guide, not the other way around. You cannot just pick an
animal that you find to be appealing and have it as one of your Totems.
It has to be the right animal Totem for each person for them to guide us and teach us.
Each animals medicine is unique. The greatest success with Totems will be with the animals
that come to you.
I have found two good books I think it is worth mentioning and recommend about Totems.
These may prove to be very valuable and useful sources on information
for those seeking their own Totems. The two books mentioned are
"Animal Magick" by DJ Conway and "Animal-Speak" by Ted Andrews.
