NEA-Alaska Delegate Assembly
by Michael Edison, Representative

The Alaska-NEA consists of over 13,000 members. One delegate is allowed for each 24 members. Iditarod is allowed one delegate.

Never-the-less, as a voice for an area that is geographically larger than the State of Ohio, I felt a tremendous responsiblity to be heard.

The Delegate Assembly decides the official policies, procedures, and priorities for the upcoming year. There were approximately 250-300 people in attendance.

I sponsored two major proposals concerning items here in rural Alaska: The No Child Left Behind Act and Rural Teacher Housing. There was quite a bit of debate on these. In fact, Rural Teacher Housing had failed in committee meetings and required a 2/3 majority to pass in the General Assembly. I had my work cut out for me. Please click here to find out the results of that vote and other issues.

I also want to thank Joan O'Neil, formerly of Anvik, and Rich Kromberg, former President NEA-Alaska for their support for rural issues. And, my sincere thanks for my constituents who have allowed me this opportunity to serve.

Respectfully,

Michael Edison
