Now with updated pictures...
Blade:
Plain soft steel, hey, it's a starter.
No edge, I'm a newbie and don't like cuts.
It is pointy though...
Blade length from top of handles to point is 4 inches.
When the handles are closed the blade is totally covered
and captive by the side pieces.
I'd like to replace the blade with tool steel, maybe later.
Or just do another one and keep this one for a trainer.
Handles:
0.093" x 1/2" brass (hobby for now).
Spacers:
Soft aluminum, 1/8" thick.
Lower ones (near where the lock would go) riveted with
1/8" diameter brass rod.
Upper ones riveted with 1/16" diameter brass rod.
Pivots:
Yup, you guessed it - Brass Chicago Screws, modified.
Blue Loctite'd to keep from unscrewing, etc.
Also, there's two each Phosphor-Bronze 0.005" washers
between the handles and the blade, one each side.
Created by punching out some sheet
shim stock, once for the diameter and again for the hole. Cheap.
Seen in 4th photo below...
Tang Pin:
Stainless Steel 1/8", diameter.
Lock:
None.
Modified Tanto blade shape:
File Work:
First attempt.
You can just barely see one of the phosphor-bronze washers peeking
out under the blade.
The pin is captive.
There was going to be a second tang pin to center and captivate the
closed blade.
So far, it's not installed.
The side spacers were needed as the brass flexed too much and pinched
the blade.
Those side spacers holds the handles apart for flipping.
Those handles are heavy.
Blued Blade:
Mini Trainer:
Same Brass for the handles, only much shorter.
Guitar string spacers.
Blade capture spacers uses nails for rivets (silvery
color).
Tail spacers riveted with 1/16" brass.
Chicago Screws for pivots, again. (Hey, they're cheap!)
No Lock.
Handle Length: 2 7/8"
Blade Length: 2 3/8" (from top of handle to tip
of blade).
Overall Length: 5 1/4"
Scratches show the softness of mild steel.
Only because it's a "trainer", no edge.
Still need to adjust the handles closer, a bit...
How the Tang hits:
Those Guitar string spacers:
This here's number three in this series.
0.064" x 1/2 wide brass handles with aluminum spacers and brass
rivets.
Mild steel edgeless blade with brass tang pin. Length is about 4 1/16"
long (handle top to blade tip).
4 each Phosphor-Bronze pivot washers. (just like the others)
Chicago-Screws; with stainless-steel 8-32 screws replacing the brass
C.S. screws.
File Work:
Latchless; but only temporarily:
Closeup of the file work:
This is my first attempt at this stuff...
Padauk "Popsicle" Handle Adornments:
Wood: 1/10" thick, musical grade.
Screws: 4-40 and shortened from 1/4" length.
Rivets filed flat under the popsicle covers.
Other Blade Edge View:
The tang pin is now partially covered.
Inside View of popsicle screws:
Those Chicago-Screws have reduced head diameter to match the 8-32 screws
diameter.
Closed View:
About this big:
How much of the backside of the blade is covered
when one handle is closed:

#4 in this series
I tried to get the knife into a pen box but it is still a bit wide
at the right end.
Blade: Mild Steel, not heat treated.
Handles: Brass, 3/8" x 1/8". with handle stock for spacers.
Pivots: Chicago-Screws with the heads turned down to 0.310"
to match the 8-32 button-head screw diameter.
Tang pins: stainless-steel, 1/8" diameter.
Handle: 4-40 screws hold the handles together.
Lock: none for now. - Added: 9/5/2007.
Washers: 0.010" Phosphor-Bronze shim stock, 0.310" dia (OD)
and 0.199" hole (ID). Guess How.
A bit more work on the handle ends:
Obviously not sharp no edge at all.
One Stainless Screw, One Black Screw
Hand picked for fit.
Didn't get all of the nickel plating removed, a temporary thing
Room for a lock?
No friction washers, coming.
Blade not "wavy'd" yet, still straight.
Wavy Blade:
It's just file work.
Handles cleaned up some.

Handle Holes and Contours:
The Latch
Notched the inner piece and slightly notched the latch. Also it is
"bent" to shorten it just a bit.
