Doll Site Organization Survey: Results

Most recent summary is from 2-15-05

Most Recent Summary ~ Skip to Conclusions ~ Old Summaries

By request, I've compiled the results to the survey, so you can see what's happening without having to wade through the numbers yourself. Until (and unless) I close the voting, this survey will continue to evolve and become more representative. These are the results from the date indicated, so things may have changed.

If you haven't taken the survey, why not go back and do that, first? These results will make more sense if you're familiar with the questions, and you can contribute your opinions. :)

Sparklit keeps a tally of "votes" at the top of that page, but it counts each question as a separate vote. To get the actual number of voters, I either divide that number by eight or add up the votes for one question.

Results for 2-15-05 (137 Voters)

Nearly all voters use 800x600 or 1024x768, both of which are popular resolutions. The higher is up by ten percent (or 13 votes).

Although two-thirds of voters use IE 6.0, one in three use some other browser.

Seven in ten voters prefer to browse doll sections by type/genre. One-fifth don't care. Size barely has enough votes to be worth mentioning. (If you prefer another system, could you leave a comment saying what it is?)

Nine in ten voters like to see dolls displayed in a medium number of sections or a small number with reasonable load time. (Medium received the most votes at 2/3 the total.) "As many as possible" and "as few as possible" faired badly.

Forty-five percent of voters have popups disabled, up from previous tallies. That's 61 people. Almost everyone either doesn't disable "scripts" or didn't know what I was talking about. Possibly I should have been more specific.

Four in five voters read the terms of use before considering using anything. Nearly one in ten consider all terms to be alike, anyway.

"Average" Voter Profile:
  • Resolution: 1024x768 (53%)
  • Browser: IE 6.0+ (66%)
  • Likes to browse by genre/type (70%), in a medium number of sections (67%).
  • Has scripts enabled, but may have disabled popups.
  • Reads terms before using anything, but maybe not any earlier. (83%)
  • Has visited bunches and bunches of doll sites! (97%)

Note: I am in no way advocating gearing your site towards this profile. In fact, I believe that would be a mistake, since 43% of voters use a lower resolution than 1024x768 and a third do not use IE.

Conclusions

This is the highly subjective part. Feel free to draw your own conclusions... these are only mine.

  • You may not need to plan for anyone with a browser size lower than 800x600, but if your site is not compatible with that size your alienating nearly half of your visitors.
  • Enough dollers use browsers other than IE that you should make your your site at least functions in other browsers. (Unless it doesn't bother you that one out of every three visitors can't access your site.)
  • Your visitors will be happiest if you arrange your dolls by genre or type, avoiding either too many or too few sections. If you're going to sort your dolls another way, do it by size rather than base.
  • Javascripts will work for the average visitor, but a lot of people don't like popups, and may not be able to visit your site if that's the only browsing option. In fact, according to the latest results, a popup site may disrupt more visitors than a site geared for 1024x768 browsers.
  • People are willing to read your terms before using anything, but probably not before viewing anything.
