Neo is a perfect example of a cinematic character whose story illustrates the process of knowing. In the Matrix, Neo is confronted with the opportunity to learn the truth about the world around him and he comes to know the truth by using the process of knowing. Neo is told that all he has ever known is wrong, and he comes to realize what reality is. Neo perceives that the entire notion of the matrix is crazy, and categorizes the notion as crazy and impossible. He evaluates how true the statements that his reality is not true are, and continues with the process by testing it for himself. He is told to jump from one skyscraper to another, and at first he is astonished. He looks over the edge and thinks that if he were to jump he would surely die, but he tests it anyways.

In this story of Neo we see him illustrating the five steps in the process of knowing:
1) Neo perceives, or takes in data from the senses, when he is told and shown that his reality is not the truth, and that there is a greater truth out there.
2) Neo categorizes the information he has just taken in as impossible and plainly crazy.
3)Neo evaluates what he is being told by deciding whether or not it is possible or probable that what he is perceiving is true or not.
4) When Neo is told to jump he symbolizes jumping as death. He looks over the edge of the building and immediately knows that he will die if he falls. He relates jumping to death.
5) Neo ends the process of knowing by testing it out for himself. Neo decides to jump even though he doubts. He comes to know the truth by testing what he could not otherwise know. Because Neo jumps he comes to know the truth about the matrix.
