Some people look at the world today and see all the bad things. When they look they see the cruel and self-centered things that humans can do to each other. The world around us may seem to be dark sometimes, but even in the darkest of times I believe that there will always be good and kind people in the world.

In our world we always see the worst things that people do to each other, and we always talk and remember these actions, but what we should be looking at are the actions of those people who are good, and self-sacrificing. It is not hard to recall some of the worst actions that anyone has ever done, such as the Holocaust, but it is easy to forget the good things that people did during this time of complete and utter destruction. Some people risked their own lives to save others even though they never had to take any actions at all. People are capable of terrible things, and that will always be true, but people are also always capable of great things.

In the early years of our country we treated our fellow human being as poorly as anyone could ever treat another person. The people in the southern United States held Africans as slaves only based on the color of their skins. As we look back we can all see the horrible and tragic actions that the slaveholders took against the slaves. The slaves were treated as less then human just so people could make money off of them. We look back and we see human cruelty at its fullest, but what we allot of times forget to look at are the actions of the people who tried to save the slaves. Many white people helped the slaves of the south escape into freedom even though they never needed to lift a finger.

This week at SLUH we held a drive to give to a family that has nothing. We were asked to give, and even though we were not required to, people stepped forward and donated to those who are less fortunate than us. We were asked for money, and instantly we had over two hundred dollars. People gave their money and goods to those who have no way of getting it for themselves. It is these selfless actions that should be what define us as human beings. Everyone should remember that even in the darkest of times there will be a light. People will always have the capacity for doing evil and horrible things, but I believe that human beings also have the ability to do good and kind things as well.
