CHAPTER ONE
A Stolen Orange

Kiley sat next to Lori, both of them gazing round their surroundings, amazed by all the famous people they’d spotted. “This is amazing” Lori whispered and the lights in the cinema started to dim. “Thank you so much for winning this Kiley!”

Kiley laughed and replied. “It’s not a problem.”

“I’ll have a vodka and coke and an orange juice please”

The man behind the bar handed her her order.

“Thanks” Returning to the table, Lori still hadn’t returned from the ladies room, so she sat and sipped her drink, just watching the world go by. The small sequins on her skirt glinted in the dim lights and her wavy auburn hair looked like silk under the lighting.

Disturbed from her thoughts she looked up to see someone standing in front of her.

“Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?”

“Erm, no, not at the minute”

Sitting down in Lori’s seat, Kiley noticed he looked familiar, but because there were so many famous people in the room, she couldn’t put a name to the face.

“Did you enjoy the film?” he asked, his blue eyes sparkling.

“Yeah, it was good, what about you?”

“Yeah, all right. What’s your name by the way?”

“Kiley.”

“That’s a pretty name. I’m Brian” he said, smiling. “Nice to meet you” he added, shaking her hand. She watched him intently as he took a sip of the drink she’d just bought for Lori.

“So, what are you doing here?” he asked, making small talk.

“Oh, I won a competition.”

“A competition! That’s pretty cool! What did you have to do?”

“Not much really” Kiley started to explain as Brian listened with interest.

“So how far did you have to travel to get here?”

“Not far. I just live in the city.”

“Ah, it’s just your accent, not from Florida. Am I right?”

“Yup. Very good. Alabama. Moved here for college. Liked it so decided to stay.”

“What are you doing now?”

“Journalist” They chatted for a while longer till Lori returned “Oh, hey Lori” she said, smiling up at her friend.

“Hi. Who’s this?” she asked, nodding her head to Brian.

Kiley made introductions and pulled out a chair for her. “Did you not get me my orange?” Lori looked round the table, a puzzled expression on her face.

“Someone stole your orange” Kiley explained, smothering a laugh. Brian caught her eye, smiled, then his expression turned to guilt.

“Oh, sorry, it seems we have the same taste. Shall I get you another one?”

Lori shook her head. “No, it’s okay.”

Turning to Kiley, Lori started excitedly. “You’ll never guess who I’ve just seen in the ladies!!”

“Who?” Kiley asked, trying not to sound too interested.

“Jennifer Lopez!! She is so pretty!!”

“Cool! Did you speak to her?”

“No, I could never bring my self to speak to any one famous!”

Kiley laughed and glanced up at Brian, to see him flash her his famous smile.

“Well, I better get going” he announced, getting up to leave.

“Oh.” Kiley said, trying not to sound too disappointed. She had enjoyed their little chat, he was easy to talk to. “It was nice meeting you”

“Yeah, same here. Oh, Lori, is it?”

Lori nodded. “I’m sorry about the drink”

“Oh, it’s okay”

“Well, see you later” he said, smiling as he brushed past Kiley and headed towards the door, leaving a tingling sensation where he’d touched her. 1
