Do I Qualify for H.O.M.S.?
These guidelines were created so that H.O.M.S. is able to help as many sisters as possible, who are truly in need and do not have any alternative plan of action for homelessness.

Who is a candidate for H.O.M.S?
1. A sister who after converting to Islam has a difficult time adjusting due to her family’s disapproval of Islam, or her observance of hijab (covering), and or overall mistreatment from her present community. If this sister has no other alternative means of housing, (i.e. other family members, or another Muslimah) and is in need of a temporary place to live.

2. A single, divorced or widowed sister, (i.e. not Islamically married) regardless of her being born into or converting to Islam. FINALIZATION OF THE DIVORCE PROCESS IS MANDATORY. All references will be verified and if the sister is divorced she must provide the written divorce decree from her local Imam. Upon
verification of references, parents of the sister will be notified by the local Imam to make them aware of their Islamic obligation to care for the sister and her children.
If the parent’s state they will care for and take in the sister, the application process will cease and sister will be advised to return home to her parents. In the case of physical abuse, the sister is still required to seek a written divorce but she may eligible to apply for residency before her Iddah (90 days) is completed.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IF YOUR FAMILY WANTS YOU, WHETHER THEY LIVE IN THE CONTINENTAL US OR OVERSEAS, YOU DO NOT QUALIFY FOR RESIDENCY!

3. A sister who meets the above criteria, but is in need of help fulfilling her five pillars of Islam. Meaning, the sister has declared her faith to be Islam (Shahadah), but is not praying, wearing hijab, fasting during the month of Ramadan or actively implementing all required acts of the Islamic faith into her life. If H.O.M.S
approves the application for residency, it will be contingent upon the sister’s willingness to obey Allah (SWT), follow the correct Aqeedah (belief system), and strive to strengthen her Iman (faith). This means following the rules of the Quran and the authentic Sunnah. H.O.M.S. has a structured curriculum ways within
its guidelines to help the sister (Insha Allah) to achieve these goals. Examples are as follows: attending mandatory halaqas, studying Islamic curriculum in the shelter, via authentic books and lectures by various scholars and learned students of knowledge that are available through our library. Not watching TV or listening to music, but by listening to Quran tapes and lectures that are also provided to the residents develops effective time management skills.

4. The sister must use H.O.M.S as a temporary means to get on her feet, not for permanent or long term residency.

Examples of situations that would make a sister ineligible for H.O.M.S.
1. A sister waiting on her green card. We are not an immigration assistance service.

2. A sister who chooses to come to the U.S. to pursue a degree, leave her family and country, and then finds it too difficult to survive financially. H.O.M.S. would advise this sister to go back to her family.

3. A sister decides to divorce her husband for a reason that is not permissible in Islam. H.O.M.S. does not take sisters who are not Islamically divorced, following the proper procedures. If this is a special situation, an imam or sheikh must be contacted, and a fatwa must be given to allow the sister to be removed from the
home.

4. A sister who has a male child ten (10) years or older. Boys ten (10) years and older are not allowed in the HOMS facility. If you are a sister who has a boy ten (10) years or older, H.O.M.S. will refer you, insha Allah. If you are in this situation, please email us.

H.O.M.S. is absolutely not a place for a sister to use as a convenient way to leave her husband.

Sisters will not be considered for H.O.M.S. unless their situation can be verified by a reputable source.
