How to Create a Character!
This page explains how to create a good non-canon (non-book) character. Hopefully, that is.
1. Background First, decide what kind of a background your character has. This could effect almost all other aspects of your character.
Here are some specific things you might want to consider:
- What kind of household did your character grow up in?
- Does your character have muggle parents or magic parents? Or one of each?
- Is your character a pure blood or half blood or "mudblood"?
- Is your character's family rich, poor, or middle-class?
- Are your character's parents divorced?
- Where did your character grow up?
2. Personality Then, think about your character's personality. The personality of your character will affect how your character reacts to and handles different situation, and is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT part of your character.
Consider:
- Is your character an introvert or an extrovert (introvert=reserved, extrovert=outgoing)? Remember that this will affect the rest of your character's personality (you can be half intro and half extro, you know).
- What does your character like to do in his/her free time?
- What does your character dislike?
- Is your character smart, funny, or mean? (or other adjectives?)
- Is your character outgoing and friendly, or shy and reserved?
- Would your character rather be at a party, hanging out with friends, reading a book, or spending time alone?
- Does your character like adventures and danger or does he/she avoid them at all costs?
- What classes is you character good at? Bad at?
- Does your character ENJOY learning or HATE it? (*note* this does not mean do they enjoy doing homework)
3. Strengths and Weaknesses EVERYONE has strengths AND weaknesses. Nobody is perfect. Your characters strengths will help them in the GP and their weaknesses will either hurt them or they will have to overcome their weaknesses. So...
- What is your character afraid of?
- What is your character good at?
- What is your character bad at?
- What does your character dislike?
4. Physical Description What your character looks like may also affect your character in the RPG. Make sure that your character's description matches their background. For instance, if your character is Spanish, they will (most likely) LOOK Spanish.
- Is my character short, tall, or in the middle?
- Is my character overweight, skinny, or average?
- What color/length/style hair does my character have?
- What kind of clothes does my character typically wear? -note that this should go along with their personality.
- What color eyes does my character have? -note that this should match their hair color (there aren't many people with black hair and light blue eyes, ya know.)
- Do they have any noticable scars or birthmarks (had to put that in here 'cuz of Harry!)
- Do they have any "trademarks" (Example: Do they always wear a certain necklace or always fix their hair the same way?)
5. Choosing a name Your characters name may reflect their personality or background. Or it may just be a name you like! You might want to search lists of baby names (and not just English names, either!)-for a name you like, or a name that has a specific meaning.
Some tips:
- Does my character come from a foreign country or have a family that immigrated? (ie: Spanish character=Spanish name).
- Does my character have a certain characteristic that is noticable?
- Is there a name that I like?
- Is there a name that "fits" my character?
6. Pets Your character may choose to have pets, or they may not. Some things to consider:
- Does your character LIKE animals?
- What specific kinds of animals does your character like?
- Do you want an animal that would be useful (like an owl/phoenix) or just for fun (mouse/rat/toad)?
7.WAND Each Hogwarts student MUST have a wand. Wands typically "fit" the wizard that owns them.
- How long is your character's wand?
- Is it flexible or firm?
- What type of wood is it made of?
- What magical substance is used for the core (typically unicorn tail hair, phoenix feather, or dragon heartstring)
- What is your character's wand especially good for (ie: DADA, CMC, Charms, etc).
