Jesus: Model of Faith, Model of Humanity
In this section Jesus was shown to us in his human form, not as a divine being like he is most often portrayed. This gave us someone to relate to rather than Jesus as a godly figure. If Jesus is all divine then it seems impossible that we could be like him and lead a sinless life like he did. In Jesus’ humanity we can see his struggling and hardships he has, we can see how he has great faith in god when he accepts his duty to die on the cross.
Three important
ideas:
In class we watched a movie on Ruby Bridges, the first black girl to cross the color line. Ruby attended William-Frantz school in 1960. Many of the white parents of other children cursed at her and threatened her. Ruby had to be taught in a separate classroom from the white children her whole first year of school. Despite all of the anger and hatred people showed to her Ruby was still able to be faithful and wish the best for the people who meant the worst for her. Ruby asked god to forgive them for what they were doing to her because they didn’t understand what they were doing. Through all of this, Ruby remained faithful.
We read a speech from Eric Cornell entitled “What Was God Thinking? Science Can’t Tell.” This speech points to the differences between God and Science and where they come in to play. He tells us how Science and God are separate subjects and should not be taught together. Let science be taught in a science class and let religion be taught in a religion class, they are not meant to be interchanged. Some may say that science teaches us about god but it most certainly doesn’t. Science can teach nothing about values, morals, ethics or god. Science can tell “what is what” and religion can tell us “what is good.”
We listened to a lot of “This I Believe” stories from many different people in class. One in particular struck me. Joshua Yuchasz believes that we should accept people for who they are, and that differences are good. I agree completely with Joshua. All people are very different and like different things. Just because you aren’t into the same thing as the next person doesn’t mean you have the right to say they are wrong or what they do is stupid. Differences should be respected.
This image reminds me of the suffering Jesus had to go through because of his humanity.
Who do I say Jesus
is?
I say Jesus is a man with great moral values and a good message that people should try very hard to follow. I find it hard to believe his divinity, everything that I read in the gospels that points to his divinity seems to be superstition and to have an alternative meaning.
