The Process of Knowing

Perceiving-

Frodo’s adventures and the knowledge he gains along the way is a good example of the Process of Knowing and how it works.  For Frodo’s life he had not perceived anything but the Shire and the few lands around it.  His knowledge and view of the world was limited.  Not until the Wizard Gandalf comes knocking on his door is his perception of the world changed.  The reality Frodo has in his mind is flipped 180o.  Frodo learned the survival of middle earth was in his hands.  Frodo had trouble believing the whole deal with the ring until Gandalf showed him his magic.

Categorizing-

After Frodo believed in his fate, the Ring, and Mordor he had many things and ideas to categorize.  What is truth, and what is lie?  Who are his allies and who are his enemies?  Who can he trust?

Evaluating-

After Perceiving and Categorizing the new world he lives in, Harry has to evaluate his situation.  He has to think about the best way to get to Mordor.  Harry has to evaluate how to either defeat or avoid the forces or Mordor.  Harry has to evaluate his companions such as Sam and Golum.  At a time when his mind is deceived by the ring he turns his back on his only ally, Sam, and follow Golum who later betrays him.  Frodo needs to evaluate what he needs to do in order to not fall under the influence of the ring and turn evil.  After Frodo has successfully done these three parts he can move on to symbolizing.

Symbolizing-

After Frodo was able to Perceive, Categorize, and Evaluate his new world he symbolized it by discussing the perils that lie ahead with Sam.  Him and Sam tried to prepare for what they were going to face when they reached Mordor.  They did not know if all of the information they had about the ring of power was accurate so they had to anticipate the future and what may happen to them.

Testing-

After all of this Frodo was now ready to put to test his faith in Gandalf.  When he left the Shire because he believed Gandalf he was testing his beliefs about the ring of power.  Frodo tested Golum to see if he would lead him safely into Mordor by letting him lead him there.  Frodo tested his trust in Boromir by letting him guide him but was nearly betrayed by him.
