Legacy Project
The project that I
decided to leave for my school was a group effort. Amanda and I were both apart
of this as well as our horticulture classes that we teach. Our cooperating
teacher, Mrs. Boyd had discussed with us that she really wanted to have a trench in the gardens. She wanted this because
this would decrease the water that accumulates between the student’s garden
plots. The students in our classes began to dig the
trench that will soon house rocks that the water will move through. The next
step that we took was calculating the dimensions and purchasing the materials
for the project. Since Mrs. Boyd was already planning for this we did not use
any of our personal money. We calculated the amount of rock that we were going
to need to fill the trench and also purchased the materials to line the trench
to prevent weeds from growing through. Amanda’s Landscape class lined the
trench and started to fill it with the rocks that were purchased. We then
thought of ways to have the water flow from one end through to the street. We
tried many things to make a hole in the curb which would let the water through.
Some strategies we took were taking turns using a masonry drill to drill
through the curb. We then decided that using a sledge hammer would do the best
job. It took a while but we, Mrs. Boyd, Amanda, and I finally made it through.
My class then finished filling the trench with the remainder of the rocks. The
final project has definitely been put to the test. We have had several rains
since we have all worked on the trench and it works very well. It also works
well when it doesn’t rain. We noticed that when the sprinklers are turned on it
tends to flood also. When this happens, the water that is accumulated flows
through the trench and out to the street. I know that this project wasn’t fully
our idea but I am very proud that I helped work on something that will help the
students in the future. When future classes at Katy High School use the gardens
they will not have to worry about the flooding problems because of the project
that Amanda and I as well as our classes worked
on.
