MISCELLANEOUS * (12/3/2008) The year's most anticipated holiday Chinese epic FOREVER ENTHRALLED (MEI LAN FONG) will "open with a bang" on December 5 at midnight. In the afternoon of December 2, the film held a premiere in Beijing. Director Chen Kaige with Leon Lai Ming, Zhang Ziyi, Chen Hong, Sun Honglei, Wang Xueqi, Yu Shaoqun made a public appearance with a group of creators. At the event, master of a generation Mei Lanfang's classic performance scenes footage was on display, a large-scale Beijing opera musical epic MEI LAN FANG HUA, as well as the Mei school's famous performing artists to reproduce the grand finale performance of MEI LAN FANG GARDEN FULL OF FEI GUESTS. Chen Kaige and his wife Chen Hong led Lai Ming, Zhang Ziyi, Sun Honglei, Wang Xueqi and Yu Shaoqun gathered at a public appearance and interviews with nearly 300 media outlets from around the nation. The two lead actresses Chen Hong and Zhang Ziyi both coincidentally put on beautiful red dresses that were very graceful. The event opened with a 4 minute Beijing Opera performance, then the director and actors conducted the opening ceremony, accompanied by a musical performances of TRUE LOVE FOREVER (JUNG OI WING HUNG), a tribute to the film's undying theme. Zhang Ziyi and Lai Ming even sang hand in hand the theme song YOU UNDERSTAND MY LOVE (NEI DUNG NGOR DIK OI), leading to waves of fan applause. Mei Baojiu on stage in addition to praising Director Chen Kaige for making the film impressive also praised Lai Ming's top notch performance. Whether in male or diva costumes he looked very outstanding and beautiful, which made Lai Ming instantly blush. Finally, Mei Baojiu also presented a "plum flower map" to the director, as thanks to the entire team. The event finally with the flying flower stage effect to coordinate with the film's romantic theme and ended in a song and dance atmosphere. Yesterday the Beijing media has already seen the film in advanced and had nothing but praises for the film. Reportedly the film was packaged in three parts of "Death Parting", "Life Separation" and "Union and Scattering", the romantic feelings touched many people. * (12/1/2008) The movie IP MAN's Wing Chun event was held yesterday at the Plaza Hollywood. The film's leads Donnie Yen Chi tan, Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam), Wong Yau Nam, Du Yuhang, and Ip Man's son Master Ip Chun attended. Chi Tan at the event demonstrated Wing Chun with a group of student. Although Lynn said that she did not want to talk about Aaron Kwok Fu Sing anymore, yesterday at the event the master of ceremonies and other actors make fun of her. The master of ceremonies claimed that Lynn had a Best Actor to teach her acting. Chi Tan joked that she did not need a Best Actor as many experienced actors were at the scene. Lynn immediately looked embarrassed and just kept nodding. Chi Tan said that his initial impression of Lynn was only that she had a lot of gossip. After working with her a day, he realized that her eyes were very amazing. He said with a laugh, "How amazing they are you will have to ask her good friend." Chi Tan said that he has just returned from Beijing two days ago. He attended a forum at the Qinghua University. On this publicity tour he visited more than a dozen cities, and later would promote in Southeast Asia. December 14 would be the birthday of Chi Tan's son, he said that he definitely would celebrate with his son. He joked that his son was very strong like Hercules. Everyday he grabbed the baby bed and shook it to wake them. He joked that he could not teach his son gong fu as he feared that he would be invincible. Lynn and Kwok Fu Sing appeared at the airport an hour apart. She expressed that she returned to work in Mainland then visited her family in Nanjing. She heard from reporters that Sing Sing returned to Hong Kong that day but stressed that they were not together. Sing Sing recently worked on SAT YUN FAN (MURDERER), reportedly he was fond of lead actress Zhang Junning. Lynn asked reporters, "So what?" When asked whether she was jealous, she immediately made a clean break with Sing Sing and said that has nothing to do with her. She hoped that readers from now on would see her hard work and progress in acting, rather than something unnecessary. * (11/29/2008) Hu Tingting, Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu's beloved daughter, has recently come to Hong Kong to promote her new film BALLISTIC (DAN, DOH). Because of the film is suspected of hinting at the Chen Shui-Bian incident, would her as the daughter of a blue camp official lead to any sensitivity? She says completely not because she is a professional actor. She would only play any role fully. In fact this time she is able to work with director Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung), as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan Best Actors Simon Yam Tat Wa, Ko Chun Hung and Liu Kai Chi, she was not only happy but also able to learn many more things. * (11/29/2008) Monica Mok Siu Kei with her first lead role in the film OCEAN FLAME would compete with elders Karena Lam Ka Yun, Prudence Lau Mei Kwan and Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung) for the Golden Horse Best Actress. Two days ago she attended OCEAN's press conference and premiere in Taipei. Her performance in the movie has made many local film critics and media naming her as the dark horse Best Actress. She humbly said, "Wow! For me the nomination is already a prize in itself, I am afraid to think too much!" Monica was asked whether she was confidence about winning the Golden Horse Best Actress? She said, "At the beginning I misunderstood that I wasn't nominated for Best New Actor, then I received a notice to compete for Best Actress. Her mood was already like she has won. Because it was her first female lead, she still had room for improvement. I was able to be nominated for my first performance, to me it was like a win; but I really didn't want to think too much. (Are you confident about winning?) yes, but I am already very happy about being the dark horse favorite." * (11/29/2008) Jackie Chan yesterday rushed from the plane to attend a Hermes event. Jackie Chan will visit Beijing tomorrow to shoot ads and attended the China Disabled People's Fund charity concert. Then he will return to Guangzhou and participate in a concert with Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming). Next April he will work on the new film DAI BING SIU JEUNG (BIG ARMY LITTLE SOLDIER), which he will personally produce. In addition, reportedly Jackie Chan has received threats and will not attend this year's Golden Horse Awards. Jackie Chan expressed on a television interview that this year he intended to attend with the entire family but he should not be able to. Hopefully next year he will be able to. * (11/28/2008) Johnnie To Kei Fung yesterday shot his new film FOOK SAU (REVENGE) on the busy Mong Kok street. This film was a Media Asia co-operation with French investors, starring famous French actor Johnny Hallyday and Anthony Wong Chau Sun. The shoot yesterday had Hallyday coming to Hong Kong for revenge and asked Wong Chau Sun for help, but in the rain he could not find Wong Chau Sun in the crowd. Around 3:00PM, the film company was preparing to shoot on Sai Yeung Choi Street, Mong Kok, with several tanker trucks to create a rain effect. To Kei Fung also personally directed the shoot. He thanked the Hong Kong Government for its quick roadblock approval. Ultimately Mongkok was always busy and a Hong Kong feature landmark as well. Wong Chau Sun was happy that with the government support the application was fast. Working with French star Hallyday, he honestly said that they did not know each other before. After researching later he realized that he has been popular in France for decades. After working together they became familiar and sang JOHNNY BE GOOD, the director happened to be Johnny To; Chau Sun also praised Hallyday's singing as both charming and magnetic. Turning to his god son Edison Chen Koon Hei would not return to Hong Kong to testify at the "erotic photo scandal" due to fear for personal safety reasons, Chau Sun said that he was unclear legal issues. Recently he contacted his godson and their chats were casual. Chau Sun said that his happiness was the most important, as his godfather he only wanted his best for him. He said, "I actually really wanted to let him know, because I have asked a lot of young people who say that they still like him." Would he agree to return to Hong Kong? Chau Sun pointed out that of course if he could develop in the U.S. it would be the best because the market was large. Of course he could return to Hong Kong and develop in both places. * (11/28/2008) The Andy Lau tak Wa and Shu Qi starred, Andrew Lau Wai Keung directed LOOKING FOR A STAR (YAU LUNG HEI FUNG) has just completed its shoot. Wa Jai and Shu Qi Qi earlier accepted a magazine interview. Speaking about this new movie, Shu Qi claimed that in the film she played a casino dealer who did not know the frequent gambler Wa Jai was super rich; but also because of her fear of how other people would look at her she had reservations about the relationship. Shu Qi said frankly that this role had a similar state of mind to her own. Recently, many female artists had marriage rumors, Shu Qi stated that she was very envious but understood that fate could not be forced. Shu Qi felt that she has grown, easier to be satisfied than before; however, seeing the girls around her getting married, she felt very envious but also wished them well. She was very satisfied with what she had and treasured everything in her hands. Lau Tak Wa this time played a rich person who loved to gamble. He expressed that he also believed in luck because with hard work and perseverance alone, things might not be as you wished. Yet sometimes he would think that what he would do when luck ran out. When he jumped from television to film he was suspended. He did not mind because he got experience from it. Wai Jai pointed out in recent years whether he played a hero or a villain, lead or support, he only pursued the quality of performance. He felt that love was the same way. * (11/28/2008) The Law Sau Yiu directed new film DUEN JAM DIK SUN MING (SHORT LIFE) yesterday held a production start ceremony at the Fanling Magistracy. This film was based on real case. Attending actors included Maggie Siu Mei Kei, Lui Wai Yi, Pinky Cheung Man Chi, and Leila Tong Ning. Cheung Man Chi this time almost wore no make up. She honestly said that initially she could not accept such a slovenly appearance, with a greasy face, foul language, smoking and beer drinking. Only that she would not spend too much time on make up everyday and save a lot of time. Siu Mei Kei this time played the Assistant Police Commissioner. As this story was more tragic, every time she got on the set she did so with a heavy heart. She also found that in reality some family cases were truly tragic and terrifying. She said frankly that during the shoot she was very frustrated, if she was unhappy she would walk away automatically to avoid affecting other people. Fortunately she was able to leave the character at the end of the day. She felt this movie was very meaningful. Tong Ning played a problem mother who saw her boyfriend sexually assaulting and abusing her 11 year old daughter and was afraid to say anything. She honestly said that during the shoot she had several scenes in which she had to hit the girl and she truly was not able to. * (11/27/2008) The Jet Tone movie "Miao Miao" yesterday held a friendly screening. Not only the film theme song singer Julian Cheung Chi Lam was in attendance but also Tony Leung Chiu Wai came in support of the company. Other guests included Shirley Kwan Suk Yi, Eric Kot Man Fai, AngelaBaby, Shaun Tam Chun Yin and Lai Lok Yi. Leung Chiu Wai earlier reportedly gained weight and postponed his plan of having children for the film YUT DOI JUNG SI (MASTER OF A GENERATION). Wai Jai explained that actually he did not deliberately gained weight, only that he got fat on his relaxing holiday. As the shoot was five to six months away, he started to slim down and get into shape. Did he delay plans to have children for the film? Wai Jai said, "There is no relationship. I am not the one who is giving birth, in fact, I have always left that to fate. If I have one it is an act of God, I wouldn't give myself pressure." Did Wai Jai not like children? He has frankly that he has never resisted, since he was married he would leave it to fate. Director Wong Kar-Wai earlier jokingly asked Wai Jai to train a six-pec abdominal muscles. Wai Jai would like to, everyone would. Yet he did not work on the character of Ip Man just for abdominal training. Wai Jai said that he trained and lost weight for HAPPY TOGETHER (CHUN GUONG JA SIT) and LUST CAUTION (SIK GAI). Studying for Wing Chun this time, he had to grasp time properly because it was not his expertise. Now he has only started practicing for two weeks, his training was still Very preliminary. He said, "The brain wants to but sometimes hands and feet don't want to listen." Would Wai Jai to take advantage of this period of time to have a child? He expressed that even film shoot ends, he would not give himself pressure and leave it to fate. Only in movies would you say you have to. Chi Lam yesterday attended the movie MIAO MIAO friendly screening. He performed the theme song and said, "I haven't released a record in three or four years. This time with the MIAO MIAO theme song gave me a Golden Horse Award Best Film Song nomination, then I will be personally attend the Golden Horse Awards to perform." Moreover, Kwan Suk Yi yesterday attended. She said that she has rarely made films, but she would not mind if a good script presented itself. * (11/27/2008) The halls of the Louvre art world invited Taiwan's world-class director Tsai Ming-liang to begin shooting VISAGES, which has already been in production in Paris in two weeks. First it shot on location in the sixteenth century Royal Garden Tuileries Gardens the one-night stand between female lead Laetitia Casta and a buck. She sang classic love songs at the Bucks provocatively. It was the scene that took the most effort from the crew. As for the buck it came from France's professional animal training farm, Tsai Ming-liang as early as two months before the shoot, drove two hours over thousands of miles away to the Manor to "audition" bucks. At the official shoot four strong men were on hand to serve the buck at any moment so the buck could make in front of the camera the gesture, movement, expression and positioning that the director wanted; Laetitia's love songs and body were so provocative though even the usually tame buck behaved abnormally. Not only did it crash through the mirrors but also ripped the over NT$2 million designer clothing on Laetitia. It even attacked its trainer. That evening shoot took the staff three terrifying nights to complete. However, Tsai Ming-liang saw the raw footage and was 100 per cent satisfied with the results. Next week he will begin a more major scenes and shot at ten locations in the Louvre for the first time. * (11/27/2008) Intercontinental distributed film BALLISTIC today is officially released. Two nights ago it held a premiere. Guests included director Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung), actors Shen Mengchang, Hu Tingting and Liu Kai Chi. Executive producer Chan Fook Sun and her father in law also attended. Other guests included Cecilia Yip Tung and her husband, Michelle Ye (Yip Shuen), Ti Lung and his son, Kung Shuet Fa, Lo Hoi Peng, Ga Si Lok and Tian Ni. Before the premiere, SHEN MENGCHANG first imitated Chen Shui-Bian while Hu Tingting played the police in conjunction with one of the extras in a short satirical play of Chen Shui-bian. Chan Fok Sun frankly hoped that the films would be both a critical and commercial success. Although the film was about a corrupted "President" it did not name names. When asked if she was worried about the film's Taiwan release next January would subsequently lead to the pro-Bian party's fierce reaction? She never thought about this, but was not worry because they did not name names. The film was shot while Bian was in office, Chan Fok Sun really admire the courage of the director and actors, and the film will apply for next year Golden Horse Awards. In addition, currently focusing on film Yip Shuen was not only busy with new film LADY COP AND PAPA CROOK (DAI SAU CHA JI NUI) promotion. Later with Simon Yam Tat Wa and Lam Ka Tung she would work on a modern film as a cool woman killer. As for action scenes, she said that she did not know and killers did not have to do a lot of action. Many artists were subject to the financial impact of the tsunami, she has been fortunate with her salary because her films belonged to the company's boss. * (11/27/2008) The movie ALL ABOUT WOMEN will open in less than a month. A number of scenes in the movie has seen the light. The latest was rock music village "orchard" and Kuei Lun-Mei's residence, but worth mentioning was Siu Mei's residence was "a garbage dump." In the film playing an underground rock singer Kuei Lun-Mei lived with other musicians like Stephen Fung Tak Lun in a low rent village "orchard". "Orchard" was shot in Beijing's 798 art district. The location originally was an abandoned factory, an desolate landscape. Director Tsui Hark suddenly was inspired to get a large number of empty gasoline barrels so musicians could play the barrels instead of drums, or light the fire in the barrels. They added a bit of romance and boldness for the down on its luck rock band. As for Siu Mei's residence it was also rebuilt from a 798 arts district abandoned building. As she was a girl who was full of fantasy and an angry youth, art director Li Daqi thought that her home should be full of contradicting style. It had a very Romantic fairy tale like appearance, but was also a ruin. In order to figure close to the people's financial state, the furniture of the house were found from the street. However, the garbage and hand made room was both cool and stylish, Siu Mei liked it a lot and kept taking photos of it. Even Zhou Xun wanted to live in there. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, DECVEMBER 3 2008, FILM WORDS MIAO MIAO HAS NOT SURPRISED WITH TAIWAN FEVER AGAIN After CAPE NO. 7's Taiwan box-office miracle, its Hong Kong release also had dec ent the box office. The Taiwan youth film MIAO MIAO led to anticipation of extending the Taiwan Fever, yet it has not again become a surprise hit. Actually MIAO MIAO is a Hong Kong and Taiwan co-production, with Hong Kong's Jet Tone invading Taiwan. Producer Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, Planner Ngai Siu Yun and cinematographer Kwan Boon Leung are all from Hong Kong. Director Cheng Hsiao-Tse and the leads are all Taiwan new comers. This is Taiwan film's expertise of high school female student romantic comedy, with opposite sex and same sex relationships that star pretty girl new star of Chinese and French mixed heritage Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung) and the bilingual in Chinese and Japanese Ke Jiayan. Both have cross-border characteristics. The film was originally calculated right up Taiwan's alley. Made light and flighty, it even constantly speaks Japanese and a free forming bad like CAPE. Why can it not bring another feverish response? Perhaps, MIAO MIAO is too calculating and too accommodating, planting flowers with intentions but flowers do not blossom; country neighborhood film CAPE NO. 7 that does not have positive outlook initially instead becomes an unexpected bloom. To be fair, Cheng Hsiao-Tse's direction is flexible and considered competent. Both young female stars are attractive, half a "foreign girl" Cheung Yung Yung as Ai is vivid and full of comedy feel; Ke Jia Yan as the half "Japanese girl" new students Miao Miao is a typical quiet Eastern girl next door. Once upon a time Ai has a crush Miao Miao, while Miao Miao has a crush on the record store depressed guy Wing Fan Chih Wei, but he is a gay man who has a hard time with forgetting his old flame. This film seems to be heterosexual but mainly engages in homosexuality. Comrade films can only occasionally break out, romantic mainstream ultimately remains heterosexual. MIAO MIAO thus probably could not attract a lot of girl support. In addition, the male lead Fan Chih Wei just keeps on playing depressed and lacks fascinating charm. Without any doubt CAPE NO. 7's Chinese Japanese heterosexual romance and comedy sense are even more popular. Speaking of which, Taiwan has long been making regular student films; the beautiful girl falling in love with nostalgic melancholy guy is even the old formula, Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha)'s claim to fame OUTSIDE THE WINDOW (CHEUNG OI) based on Yao Qing's original work is an example. Since the 1980s, more movies are about girls and their friendship like the Chen Kuo-fu directed HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS. Since then same sex subject has become the hidden gem amid the Taiwan film downturn. In recent years the biggest hit has been the Zero Chou Meiling directed SPIDER LILIES (CHI CHING). Chou Meiling's new film DRIFTING FLOWERS makes homosexuality even more subtle and with Taiwan local flavor, this year's Hong Kong International Film Festival has screened it but it was not popular. In Hong Kong so far it has not had a chance for release. - SHEK KEI 2. MING PAO DAILY, DECEMBER 3 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS NEXT YEAR MOVIES HAVE TO SHOW VALUE Under the financial tsunami threat, next year film box office estimate may be decent, even metaphysics experts are also making such forecasts. There is a past track record for this. When the U.S. economy is in a recession, the audience floods into the theaters. Poor economic environment instead is conducive to film for many reasons, the most likely explanation is that people hope through the movies they can escape from the reality. Stars also rise easier at this time. Film is relatively cheaper consumption, a ticket is no more than a few dozen dollars. The cheapest seat in a concert, "the Peak spot" is more than a hundred to two hundred, a little better positions is 3000 to 5000. Plays are not cheap either, a ticket is at least two or three hundred. Good economy would have better entertainment products. When the desire to spend is low, even computer games has less breakthrough. Manufacturers will not invest too many resources into development. Although film has optimistic outlook, not all films can benefit at the same time. Under the climate of cautious spending, when people spend money they have to find value for their money. What elements do films need to be called a value? Since people are going to the theater, a form of collective entertainment, the more audience choose a film the more popular it gets. In other words box office will continue to polarize. The good gets better, the bad even worse. The film that many people choose definitely would not be poor, such consumer mentality can be seen at the theater box office. Big stars and big productions do not necessarily hit big, yet without a better choice in the same period, they will have the advantage. What is an even better choice? High entertainment value will have better outlook. If the subject matter is serious, even with big stars in a high-cost production, it would be defeated just as badly. Entertainment film with serious production and serious performance is a winner. For a movie to become a hit, the audience must see its texture. Creativity is also an important element that is a value for the audience. Repeated or old subjects have difficulties with audience support. Film audience has gradually grown tired of movies with too many computer graphics, viewers can get into more human stories even more. Most importantly after viewing the audience gets more comfortable or joyous feeling than before. Comedy that will be popular will be the truly funny rather than nonsense. - KWOK HIN CHING 3. MING PAO DAILY, DECVEMBER 2 2008, FILM WORDS BOTH NOBODY AND BALLISTIC ARE LESS THAN GREAT Just as Hong Kong films are becoming fewer and fewer, sometimes to the point of without a trace, this week has seen the releases of BEAST STALKER (JING YUN), NOBODY'S PERFECT (JUET DOI SEUNG GIU) and BALLISTIC (DAN DOH), which is considered much rarer. Of course, during the Hong Kong film peak, three simultaneous releases are considered few and not many; but now is not then and the world is truly different. The most attractive is BEAST STALKER, which proves that Hong Kong films can still work hard in the face of adversity. Movies with specialty would receive audience support. Unfortunately the other two are less than great, NOBODY'S PERFECT is simply nonsense, alluding to Taiwan's Chen Shui-bian assassination, BALLISTIC looks the part but is not and has no way to become a surprise hit. NOBODY'S PERECT is a comedy adventure of the two Ah Gius, an arrogant smart girl and an naive silly girl who all of a sudden magically switch bodies. Comedy ensues just like that and the film is childish and mentally deficient. Stars Stephy Tang Lai Yun and Kary Ng Yu Fei sometimes play smart and sometimes play dumb, but both are exaggerated distortions. Leads actor Sammy and the other co-stars are also excessively comic book like, active on stage Leung Cho Hiu as a playboy is especially artificial. Since MARRIAGE TO A FOOL, writer and director Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum), leads Stephy Tang Lai and Alex Fong Lik Sun have become a popular new era romantic comedy combination. They have continued to make LOVE IS NOT ALL AROUND (SUP FUN OI) and L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES (NGOR DIK JUI OI) but the more movies they have made, the less true romance and the more hoax they have had. By the time of the Alice Tzeng Hoi Won starred SECRET (CHUN OI DIK), the haunted layout even failed. Now NOBODY'S PERFECT is a foolish film. This year Yip Lim Sum has been very productive, but his taste has gone backward. As for the Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung) directed BALLISTIC, its production scale is not small scale. I is a rarely seen in Chinese cinema in recent years, based on the true story political thriller that has turned the Chen Shui-Bian presidential re-election bid assassination case into a complicated conspiracy. It even claims that later the official investigation hides the truth as a series of silencing murders take place. Even though it is a fictional story, it is less than convincing and hard to believe as it cannot form any intensely thrilling drama. The male lead actor is Taiwan male star Joseph Chang (Cheung Hau Cheun) who plays a fierce detective with integrity, Hong Kong's Simon Yam Tat Wa, Lam Ka Tung and Liu Kai Chi co-star. It even has experienced Taiwan male star Ko Chun Hung, Cheung Kwok Chu and female star Alice Tzeng Hoi Won in support. Due to the absence of real material, actors cannot perform well. Better acting comes from Cheung Kwok Chu who is in his form as the sly and evil conspirator; the actor who is supposed to be Chen Shui-Bian looks the part but does not have a lot of screen time. BALLISTIC's format is somewhat similar to 1970 well-known foreign political thriller THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, but falls far short of the level. Actually now being anti-Chen Shui-bian is also difficult to lead to any interest. - SHEK KEI 4. MING PAO DAILY, DECEMBER 1 2008, FILM WORDS BEAST STALKER ACHIEVES ADVERSITY IN TOUGH TIMES The battle between the police and criminals is still the strength of Hong Kong films. The Nicholas Tse Ting Fung starred, Dante Lam Chiu Yin directed new film achieves explosive impact and intense atmosphere as it leads with its opening box office. BEAST STALKER starts with realism and ferocity, as well as Hong Kong's significant city features. From the coffee shop gathering, the police's thrilling case resolution, to the car chase and car crash, people, situation and action are uncommon and constitute a surprisingly strong tragic drama. The main story is a conventional child kidnapping case that demands in lieu of money court evidence destruction as the ransom, which is similar to the foreign film Hong Kong film adaptation CONNECTED (BO CHI TUNG WA) but better. Because of its attention to detail, both the direction and acting are on display significantly. BEAST STALKER emphasizes the ominous clouds days, people have an instant misfortune. The lead characters all have suffered from major setback, downfall, but refused to give up as they attempt to save the save others and themselves at a crisis and adversity. In addition to the film's action stimulation, it also pays attention to life's challenges, emotions and fighting spirit that enable actors to have outstanding performance. Tse Ting Fung plays a strict and responsible young sergeant who is unflinching to subordinate's littlest mistake and cannot forgive his own. He risks everything to save a little girl in order to atone, but good intentions may lead to bad consequences. Would his full force compensation subsequently bring more tragedies? This is the character with the strongest personality and the most conflicted destiny in Tse Ting Fung's film career. Nick Cheung Ka Fai plays the one-eyed kidnappers who is very cold-blooded and cruel, unlike the average madman villain this career criminals is acting out of love and is also a complex character. There is veteran cop Liu Kaichi who has been on the job so long that he is disillusioned and downtrodden yet he remains loyal. A number of supporting roles are decent, among them the cop cousin is very intricate. Actress Zhang Jingchu plays a prosecutor whose daughter is kidnapped, the film's most far-fetched character whose personality is not as clear cut as the male characters. Fortunately this Mainland actress has variety, from PEACOCK to SEVEN WORDS, PROTEGE to this time she has had different images, each with its own attractiveness. The other female character is new comer Miao Fu, who has to play her pitifully paralyzed character in bed but also has a good expression. The story's layout also has its tricks. A car accident affects three groups of people, the inspiration may perhaps come from BABEL's Mexican director Inarritu's old film AMORES PERROS. Strictly speaking this movie's story is still piled on, the good news is that director Lam Chiu Yin is in good shape, with impulse, love and honor he also has a good cast. he this year actually has made SNIPER first, but it has not been able to be released. Perhaps due to one of its lead Edison Chen Koon Hei's scandal, no one knows when will its "ban" be "lifted". - SHEK KEI 5. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 30 2008, CAPE NO. 7 (2) A movie should have been made like this, but in (Taiwan's film) history, for some reason it has during the past decade headed almost exclusively into two directions: Either the so-called "creator film" that is clever sounding but actually pale, hollow and tasteless (Tsai Ming-Liang and movies that is full of hostility and contempt for the local audience are the representatives, in recent years already lacking anything innovating Hou Hsiao-hsien followed), or the so-called "different color" work that indulges in the twilight of adolescence And the state of narcissism, self-pity undertone (most on average are named after short seasons or illusory mood). Both also have one thing in common: they are simple in name, but content with laziness in reality; they take the easy way out (the biggest sin is giving the long-take a bad name, making people think that "fixed" or "no editing" are the marks of an art film). CAPE NO. 7 is pragmatic. Content wise, it starts from life, writes about the little people (underdogs), the losers' not only ridiculous but a little sad story (Has this not always been the characteristics from "healthy realism" to "Taiwan's new movie"?) Because it is genuine, it appears to be intimate. More importantly, the writer would think that it the film's structure. It reminds us that a full-length dramatic script's basic requirement is to have a solid structure. Even if it not necessarily needs to set up multiple story lines, it should be rich, vivid and interesting details; not just with two or three people who are walking back and forth and talking in their dreams. Such a screenplay needs excellent craft. (The author's vision is to give the script different levels.) CAPE NO. 7's seven-line development of the seven characters (who echo the film's repeatedly seven-color rainbow appearances), each character has its own unique features, each of the clues clear and orderly, often one scene at the same time can take care of a number of developments in a complex yet orderly manner. Many scene designs a wide range of space and time, the wedding banquet for example, starting from the euphoric large banquet, each character's mood slowly due to effects of alcohol changes one after another; While frolicking on the stage, each has something serious on their minds off the stage; with the advent of the night, an atmosphere changes to melancholy and sadness; On the other hand, Tomoko and Aga's transition from hostility to understanding and even to a relationship -- the entire segment is dealt with a structured, detailed charm. If this is a new director's first effort, I will think this is certainly a worthy of acclaim. To call the film pragmatic also because it does not have different fancy visuals, flashy editing machine and camera angle, stylish camera movement. On the contrary, it has people's reaction shots the most, no one is left out. That is because the author is still the most concern with the characters in the story in the end, their feelings and relationships. It sounds a bit cliche, does it not? Perhaps, but if it can move the audience, what is the problem with cliche? (When Aga plays the first note on the guitar and leaps into the air, does your heart not skip a beat?) (2) - SHU KEI 6. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 30 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS WHY HOLLYWOOD WOULD USE OUR ACTORS? A report claims that this year three of the top five negative grossing films in Hollywood have Asian actors in their casts. The three films are the third biggest loss film BABYLON AD with Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King); the fourth BANGKOK DANGEROUS with lead actress Charlie Yeung Choi Nei; and the South Korean Rain starred SPEED RACER. Hollywood films cast Asian actors for no more than two main reasons: first is for action, and the other is for the Asian market. When Jackie Chan and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) go to Hollywood they can be leading men, Needless to say, due to their action. Chow Yun Fat as well; although he is not a martial arts superstar, he looks cool with a gun. When he first came to Hollywood, he relied on action all the same. Hong Kong people know Fat Gor is no martial art master, the U.S. audience does not. Thus he can play THE BULLETPROOF MONK. Foreign viewers still do not accept Chinese actors' acting, i instead they generally feel that each Hong Kong and Mainland actor knows martial art. However, action films' advantage has gradually disappeared. Hollywood uses Hong Kong martial arts director with computer graphics to make foreign actors' agility look no different from ours. We can still claim that a foreign actor's fighting is an illusion and not as convincing as ours, but viewers do not mind, especially Western audience. When they see their own stars as heroes, they can relate even more. For the Asian market, Hollywood films would add Asian actors. Like English football teams hiring Asian players, they have their own good players but they just want others to watch their games to support their own people. Mainland is the market that has the most potential but has not fully developed, the population of 1.3 billion is Asia's largest market. Thus Mainland actors, and even the Mainland audience's favorite actors, are all in luck. However, the Hollywood super-large film productions still star their own stars, Chinese actor usually are in supporting roles. Because the U.S. market continues to be their main source of income, the order is very clear. - KWOK HIN CHING 7. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 30 2008 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY RETROSPECTIVE GOLDEN SCENE WITNESSES LOCAL FILM INDUSTRY RISE AND FALL In the long stream of light and shadow, 10 years has been enough to create many important figures and classic works. After witnessing 10 years of Hong Kong film industry's rise and fall, Golden Scene for its 10th anniversary has selected 33 films from film masters around the world. As one stage comes to an end and another about to begin for the company, Golden Scene director Winnie Tseng Lai Fun also hopes through a review of good films to broaden the audience's scope of choice and to attract more young people into the cinema. Golden Scene's 10th Anniversary Film Retrospective will be held between 4th of next month to January 14 next year, the film selections will all be films that Golden Scene has distributed in the past 10 years, including Woody Allen's MATCH POINT, Robert Altman's GOSFORD PARK, Stephen Frears' MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS, Roman Polanski's OLIVER TWIST, Fernando Meirelles' CITY OF GOD, Wong Kar Wai's MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS, Stanley Kwan Kam Peng's LANYU, Edward Yang Tak Cheung's A ONE AND A TWO, Nagisa Oshima's GOHATTO, Bong Joon-ho's THE HOST and others, involving Europe and the United States, Japan and South Korea, South America, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other places. Showing 6 Hong Kong Films Tseng Lai Fun says with a smile, the selections are all her and her colleagues' "favorites". "We have every hope that each one of your favorites masters would have a film, but Stephen Frears had two, namely THE QUEEN and MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS because I like both films and my movies mostly are about women, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS' main character Mrs. Henderson has a cinema, which is also my dream. I also hope to own a theater." She says frankly that selecting 33 films from 220 works is indeed a difficult process. She has expected to choose at most 30 films, but in the end exceeded the quota by 3. "I already left the first round selection to my colleagues because I was afraid that I would choose too many. Luckily in the end my favorite directors and films basically were not omitted." All along, among films that Golden Scene has issued, women films occupies a certain proportion, like this retrospective's POSTMODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT, THE PIANO, LA VIE EN ROSE and HAPPY GO LUCKY to varying degrees focused on women's ethos. As for Hong Kong-produced films, although only 6 of the 33 films were Hong Kong directors' works it was already the area with the most selected movies; among all the veteran directors, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho)'s name was a surprised. Winnie explained that Ng Yin Cho was not only a famous actor but also a director of merit. "When he shot the FOUR HEAVENLY KINGS he gave up a lot. The photography and subject matter were very daring, his works in the end did not receive media recognition. I feel it is a great pity. In fact for a first film, I felt that he did a great job. Although Hong Kong people did not agree, but many foreigners liked it. A lot of film festivals have selected this film. " Promote Alternative Films The preparation for the 10-year retrospective actually is a chance to look back. She says that she is the happiest about being able to issue a lot of her favorite movies. "Golden Scene ultimately is a the first company that I set up. Actually developing from scratch to 10 years is quite arduous, we have experienced an economic downturn and SARS. Now we are faced with the financial tsunami, and we do not issue Some very commercial movies. Thus our survival is well worth a retrospective film festival. In fact, if we do not this time, after 10 years we may not possibly show these works again because many of the film copyrights we have signed for only ten years. Even only after seven or eight years the film copies are return to the owners, this time some films have to get copyrights anew to be released again, like MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL MURDER, GOHATTO and LANYU. The retrospective since its start at the beginning of this year, to the middle of the year with official film and venue selections, she says that all aspects of the whole process have operated smoothly, the most important of which has been the assistance from cinemas. "We negotiated with The Grand, they have been supportive and said that they were able to provide different-sized theaters. Movies that sold well could be screened in big theaters, and the ones that did not could be screened in small theaters. I felt that we all had the same aspirations, the hope of attracting more different types of audiences, and providing more choices to everyone. Because fewer film types are not healthy to the entire film industry." She added, "Now fewer and fewer viewers watch alternative films. We all focus on the big Hollywood production, feeling that for the same amount of money and time a big production seems more of a value; but in fact, alternative films also have a lot that we can appreciate. I hope that the retrospective in additional to enable old fans to review good movies can able attract new young audience. For example, they saw the Woody Allen film this time, later they may be interested to see his other movies; or the audience that likes BATMAN BEGINS can also take a look at his old film INSOMNIA." Continues To Invest In Film Production From the tenth anniversary retrospective film selections, perhaps we can see more or less Golden Scene's film distribution direction, like the emphasis on women films and the retreat from the horror film. Winnie says, "The movies that I distribute now is very different from the past. Actually we have been changing over the past few years. I would like to find some more meaningful films, such as environmental protection subject or more "pure" films." With the Hong Kong film market now down, would the street of insisting to "find treasure" outside mainstream movies be especially big? She would not hesitate to say sometimes she would find a bit more commercial films, but certainly she would uphold the principle that the work should also be interesting. For example, Golden Scene has issued STEP UP, a story of struggle. "I am persistent because I myself like film, and after graduation I began working on this job; film can easily fascinate people, very few people who are in the business would leave again." She stressed that as long as there is still business, she will not give up hope that alternative film still has a space to survive in. "It seems that the mission is too great, but in my mind I of course hope the audience will accept these films. We used to be many film clubs like the 'Peanut Film Society that would discuss the film after its screening or have film critics to explain, but now very few people would educate young people. Even when schools promote films they will not involve any sensitive work for fear that parents would complain." She says. As for Golden Scene's future, Tseng Lai Fun reveals, she hopes to be able to distribute while investing in some Hong Kong film production. "We have already begun conception and preparations for a film production next year. Although we are subject to funding constraints as the film cannot be a big production, but I will still do the work. Last year we made SIMPLY ACTORS and MAGIC BOY, in the future we will continue to move forward." - SIU O 8. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 30 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH NICK CHEUNG KA FAI TURNS FROM SUPPORT TO LEAD IN BEAST STALKER In the blink of an eye the end of November has already come, as one big Chinese film after another will be launched; after more than half a year of annoyance the inspection issue seems to already have the approval of the solution in sight, I do not know whether it is related to the Hong Kong film investors' visit to meet with the State Administrator of Radio Film and Television's leaders. Before FOREVER ENTHRALLED (MUI LAN FONG), THE NOBLES (FEI SING MUK YIU) and RED CLIFF II (CHET BIK) are released, Hong Kong has already released a number of small and medium-sized production costs. CHAMPIONS' performance in Mainland and Hong Kong has been average, its industry talk could not compare to CAPE NO. 7. CAPE in Taiwan has broken all records. After more than a week of Hong Kong release it has made around 3 million, a neither good nor bad performance. Word of mouth would determine whether it would exceed 5 million. This film's local color is very heavy. The first half is rather dull to the Hong Kong audience but the second half gradually improves. Although both leads' performance is not very outstanding, several support players are hard to come by as they are fully entertaining. Another just released film is the Dante Lam Chiu Yin directed BEAST STALKER (JING YUN). Many viewers after watching this film would ask each other who is the witness. Reportedly this film seemed to be a real witness story, but later the screenplay changed but kept its Chinese working title. The goal was not to waste the promotion before hand. This method was Cinema City's tradition over 20 years ago, the most classic example was the film THE WRONG RIDE. The resulting film had nothing to do with the title. The title was not changed because no one wanted to waste the previous publicity effort. BEAST STALKER is decently made. Most of the audience felt it was "OK". The story is intense, the visuals are sharp, actors (Nick Cheung Ka Fai) are outstanding. It is full of commercial elements, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's performance has a certain improvement. He has shaken off his "stylish" bad habits, but still needs to make further efforts. Zhang Jingchu's performance is too eager, together with the weak role she can only be a side character. Cheung Ka Fai after years of experience and with an outstanding costume design has become a true lead of the film. BEAST STALKER's second half is mainly Cheung Ka Fai driven, in particular before the ending with the flashback to the life of Cheung Ka Fai's character. This approach is reminiscent Lam Chiu Yin's co-direction 10 years ago with Gordon Chan Ka Seung, BEAST COPS. In BEAST Michael Wong Man Tak as the protagonist opens up the whole story, but in the all important ending, only Anthony Wong Chau Sun is left to face the evil. Whether the director late in the creation process felt Cheung's character was better and made changes, only he and the screen writers would be certain. The same thing happened more than 20 years ago with A BETTER TOMORROW, reportedly Chow Yun Fat originally was a guest star. Later the director felt that his acting was outstanding and the role had a lot of potential, so he made the screenplay changes and Mark Gor thus became a classic figure. Cheung Ka Fai's acting in BEAST STALKER is enough to be a villain representative, but his role is just a rogue who only does evil deeds. No matter how much he loves his wife, no one would forgive his atrocities of kidnapping a child and injuring countless people. The director and writers' sympathy for Cheung Ka Fai's character at the end of the film would be hard for the audience to relate. - TIN LIK 9. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 27 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS DOES HONG KONG HAVE THE CONDITION FOR A MIRACLE? CAPE NO. 7 on Saturday received more than 2,000,000, for a Taiwan film it was a small miracle. Of course it could not compare with Taiwan's more than NT$500 million box office, there was a big miracle. It could not compare to Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun)'s debut as a director SECRET (BUT NUNG SHUET DIK BEI MUK), the writer felt CAPE NO. 7 in Hong Kong would have difficulty to exceed SECRET's box office. On 22 screens, the 2 million box office Saturday was very good. Film lovers were bound to be the first batch of viewers, along with viewers who go due to the media's widespread publicity. The writer believes that they would mostly be young people. In Taiwan, CAPE had all the audience of old, middle age and young viewers. Hong Kong cannot possibly achieve this. Young audience would go, 13, 14-year-old would not be attracted. As for the middle-aged audience, they would be few unless they have always been film supporters. Why would Taiwan have old and middle age viewers but Hong Kong would have less? Very simply put, CAPE's nostalgia is a piece of Taiwan's nostalgia, not Hong Kong's. CAPE was not any world shocking work. As a movie, the subplots were better written than the main story. In comparison to the always artistically dull Taiwan films it was much lighter. Taiwan people were laughing and crying, Hong Kong people at most would be a bit touched. After all, this was a movie that was made for the Taiwan people. The story behind CAPE was much more touching and entertaining than the story on the screen. What we need to watch in addition to this film itself was also how film workers struggled amid hard time and captured this hardship on a film that touched local viewers As the writer said, the revitalization the local film industry would not only rely on export - to sell film overseas and win awards, two main directions that Hong Kong is promoting in the film industry. In Hong Kong's present situation, CAPE could not be made. Even with the Film Development Fund investment, it would not have a budget over HK$10 million. Even if the government provided one-third of the investment, no investor would be found for the other 70%. A place where a miracle occur also needs conditions for a miracle. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Sit Ting Fung Won Lit : Eavesdropping Situation d.
