After more than half a month after the shooting, Under Yuen Wo Ping's tutelage, although he has fought with the King of Kung Fu Zhao Wen Zhuo (Chiu Man Cheuk) everyday he still easily completed every action. Chow Kit Lun expressed that he liked this character very much. Since the first day of the shoot he has entered this character's world. He cherished very much the chance to work with Yuen Wo Ping and hoped that one day he would be able to use what he has learned from him in his own work. In the film, most of Chow Kit Lun's scenes were gong fu battles with Chiu Man Cheuk. Speaking of Chow Kit Lun, Chiu Man Cheuk had a lot of praise for him, "I never think that his ability to adapt would be so fast, to an actor with a kung fu foundation what he's done is many times better than I initially thought, at his best he and I exchanged 16 blows, and with weapons at that. This would have been a record for professional martial art actor. His memory is exceedingly strong." Chow Kit Lun also revealed that during the shoot he accidentally injured him, in order to compare notes with Chiu Man Cheuk, he secretly did a lot of homework in advance in order not to hinder everyone's time during the shoot. He would also be able to earn their praise. * (11/19/2008) The movie CAPE NO. 7 charity premiere took place two nights ago. Attendees included Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Michelle Yin (Mai Shuet), Candice Yu On On, Mandy Lieu, and so on. Jacky Cheung Hok Yau earlier revealed that he and Chi Wai were both financial tsunami victims. Chi Wai joked, "This time the loss is good! Otherwise we won't be able to heard Hok Yau's songs. I have hoped that he will make movies again, but he has been strict and waiting for a good script. Otherwise getting him out of seclusion would be very difficult, he appears to be numb to money!" * (11/19/2008) The movie BEAST STALKER (JING YUN) Tomorrow will be released in Mainland, in recent days leads Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Nick Cheung Ka Fai had to shuttle between Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and other places to do publicity. Yesterday they arrived in Shanghai on an early flight to launched the first stop of the Mainland promotion, although the local temperature drastically dropped below 10 degrees Celsius, but their state of mind was not affected. At the event Ting Fung said that he was very pleased to be able to work with a great actor like Cheung Ka Fai, Although it was their first collaboration, the two were able to establish of a tacit understanding; at the same time he felt that working with actors who he has never worked with before would be more able to set off new sparks and also give the audience a refreshing surprise. Thereafter, they will immediately attend the three advanced screening and meet with thousands of viewers and the three cinema circuits' tickets were sold out within an hour. Due to the overwhelming response, the organizers had no choice but to temporarily cancel the original red carpet ceremony to prevent the fan enthusiasm from affecting the progress of the promotion. Ting Fung was very disappointed that he was unable to make close contact on the red carpet ceremony with thousands of fans. After the completion of the Shanghai promotion, they will go to Beijing to attend the second leg of the news conference and meet with fans. * (11/19/2008) Tsui Hark new film, ALL ABOUT WOMEN (NUI YUN BUT WAI) will be released early next month, the film in addition to Zhou Xun, Kitty Zhang Yuqi and Kuei Lun Mei in the trio’s beauty and comedy contest, also requested four famous directors to play roles in the film in an acting competition. They were Jacob Cheung Chi Leung, Kwak Jae-Yong, Fong Ping and Tsui Hark himself. Cheung Chi Leung guest starred as an unlucky customer of a medical center. Although the role was only half a minute long, in the trailer it shone with greater splendor. Actually, Derek Yee Tung Sing was originally slated for the role, but because he could not make it in time to Beijing, he was replaced in the interim. South Korea comedy film godfather Kwak Jae-Yong, in a scene when Kuei Lun-Mei was having noodles while talking with her fantasy boyfriend, appeared quietly and mysteriously on the set, Tsui Hark even made the considerate arrangements of getting him some Ja Jiang Mein. As for Tsui Hark, because he could not find a suitable extra for the additional shoot he decided to simply play the taxi driver himself. Yet because of the time this part may be cut out. Fong Ping was the most tragic out of the four because Tsui Hark deleted the whole performance. Everyone might only be able to catch a glimpse of his presence in a special edition DVD. * (11/17/2008) Taiwan film CAPE NO. 7 actors Van Fan Yichen, Chie Tanaka (Jung Tin Chin Wui) and director Wei Te-Sheng two nights ago attended a Christmas event in Kwun Tong. the cast host seven love letter mailing ceremony. Siu Fan two nights ago had to embrace three contestants, the female one's expression resembled the lead actress the most, but when Siu Fan kept his distance during the embrace and the contestants were obviously embarrassed. Later the actors mixed a drink for the director and event representatives to taste. Siu Fan joked that the director would be drunk after drinking it and could easily do something bad. After that, Siu Fan was asked whether he felt embarrassed during the embrace? He said that it was OK and confessed that the event informed him about reprising the embrace scene. He could follow Chie's cue. Chie was asked why she was so embarrassed? She said that she never expected to see so many people at the scene and she was tense. Did the production not have a lot of people? She said, "Not as many as now, during the shoot everyone was on the staff." She said that sitting on the motorcycle just now felt very dangerous, and she was more tense than the embrace because of the loud motor sound. The event has already told her to hold on tight to Siu Fan in advance. Siu Fan claimed that Chie had to sit sideway because she was wearing a skirt, which actually was even more dangerous. When asked why Siu Fan kept his distance from the contestants, he explained that he did not know the fans and worried that they would be uncomfortable. He too should respect others. Siu Fan expressed that he would attend the Golden Horse Awards in support of the film. Did he feel sorry about not being nominated for Best Actor? They successfully left the vehicle only after awhile. Everyone originally planned to distribute leaflets outside the cinema to coordinate with the new film trailer on the giant television screen, but too many onlookers were at the scene and without the presence of security guards, they relied on fans' voluntary human chain to protect them. The situation was extremely confusing, Tong So Kei even hid in fear Kary once. As the situation got beyond control, the event had to be scrapped as Stephy and others returned to the vehicle and left. Stephy and Kary a few days ago went to get their hair done together. Stephy said, "Actually I wanted to cut it myself, but I was afraid that it would look gross so I deliberately asked Kary to go together." Stephy also said that she would rarely come to Mong Kok and before she got into the business she did not dare to. She joked that she was afraid of getting lost as Kary made fun of her lack of direction. When asked whether they were afraid of being taken advantage of in crowded places, they said, "That is why we wear trousers and dare not wear tube top, previously when we tried to shake hands with a lot of enthusiastic fans, the tube top fell halfway down, and fans scratched our hands." As for NOBODY'S PERFECT being released at the same time as another new film BEAST STALKER (JING YUN) were they concerned with the box office impact? Stephy said, "I knew a long time ago about the same release period, but their genres are different. BEAST STALKER is a fight film, NOBODY'S PERFECT is a comedy. Their directions are different." * (11/17/2008) The movie MIAO MIAO's three main characters Wing Fan Chih Wei, Ke Jia Yan and Sandrine Pinna (Cheung Yung Yung) yesterday attended a promotion in the West Kowloon center, HotCha also performed a song from the film. However she was confident about winning. Fan Chih Wei also hoped that others would not have to accept the award on stage. Cheung Yung Yung heard his support and joked that when she wins she would immediately take him to dinner. They hope of a strong Taiwan Typhoon would spread and sweep across Hong Kong. Announced at the end of October as a Golden Horse Award for Best Actress nominee, Cheung Yung Yung would come to Hong Kong again with excitement. Cheung Yung Yung and Ke Jia Yan are the new darling of the Taiwan film. Earlier they have worked together in the film DO OVER, then Cheung Yung Yung has worked with Karena Lam Ka Yun in CANDY RAIN and become widely recognized with the young Chinese audience. Ke Jia Yan in Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun)'s MAPLE music video performance has left a deep impression with the audience. Last month, when they came to Hong Kong to promote the film, fans were already tracking them down for autographs and pictures. They felt surprised and happy about having the support of their own young audience in Hong Kong. After a lengthy time away from his Hong Kong fans, Fan Chih Wei took advantage of the Taiwan Typhoon to come to Hong Kong to promote. In MIAO MIAO as a young second-hand CD shop owner, he hoped that this youthful romance would be able to touch the young Hong Kong audience with a clean, romantic, and touching style. * (11/15/2008) Nick Cheung Ka Fai yesterday promoted BEAST STALKER (JING YUN) on RoadShow and mentioned Jacky Cheung Hok Yau's earlier interview on Sandra Ng Kwan Yu's program, in which he joked about Ka Fai stealing his film opportunities because they looked t oo similar. Ka Fai joked that film companies should get them to play brothers. In addition, a Mainland company reportedly has asked to back out of Wong Jing's company. Ka Fai expressed that the report claimed Wong Jing only owned 1% of the company. Wong Jing was not only a boss but also half an artist. He might have only offered his name in the partnership. he felt that in this business aside from Andy Lau Tak Wa, Wong Jing should be the second immortal. Thus he should not have any issue. * (11/14/2008) Andy Lau Tak Wa, Denise Ho Wai Si and Andrew Lau Wai Keung last night attended the Harbor City Christmas lighting ceremony and promoted their new film LOOKING FOR A STAR (YAU LUNG HEI FUNG, formerly SING MUNG KEI YUEN), but the leading actress Shu Qi was unable to attend. On stage Wa Jai revealed a story of Ah Si's drunkenness, and Ah Si immediately stopped him. After that, she revealed that that she got drunk on the night of the production wrap. She even caused a scene at the casino scene and was lucky not to be carried away. The emergence of Wa Jai and Ah Si gathered more than 100 people at the very lively scene. On the stage each talked about their Christmas wishes, Wa Jai referred to is being the lighting guest for the third year, he said previously he only knew where the 5 flagpoles were, his deepest impression was the Ocean Terminal auto show. At the time he really wanted to buy a car. Every time he came here it brought back a lot of memories. The master of ceremonies mentioned highlights of the filming. Wa Jai smiled at Ah Si, "When you got drunk." Ah Si immediately gave an awkward look and said: "We can talk about that privately, don't talk about that." She said that the most memorable was when she and Zhang Hanyu had a fierce collision of the head and the mouth. Later when asked what happened with Ah Si, Wa Jai pointed out that in one scene Ah Si kept making bad takes. The director then asked her to drink some wine. However, she took three sips and was drunk enough. Then she not only called him an elder, but also kept looking for people around her to chat. Wa Jai said that in Christmas he will go to Beijing to shoot MEI LOI GAING CHAT (FUTURE POLICE) as well as a concert in Singapore. As for online news that referred to Mainland asking singers to stop lip syncing in their shows, otherwise they will be fine; and that they could not charge for charity shows. Wa Jai pointed out that he never charged to do charity. As for singing live it would not be much of a problem for him, he would pick some live audio on-site facilities to perform in. Also each time he would sing live. Under the financial tsunami, would his Christmas show be affected? He said no because in addition to concerts and charity show, he would turn down many of them. The drunk incident that Ah Si referred to was not the same as Wa Jai's. She expressed that on the night of the film wrap, she was having fun at the hotel with Shu Qi. Finally she got drunk and caused a scene at the casino. However, everything she did was the funny type and not the destructive type. She kept chatting at the casino dealers and also cheered on hotel ladies. Fortunately she was not carried away. She in the end lost money, but forgot how much. This Christmas she will perform charity shows and make six figures donations. Turning to the Mainland lip sync ban, she never heard the rumor but was not worried because she was uncomfortable with lip sync unless she lost her voice. She was very resistant to lip syncing and felt that it was more difficult than performing live. In addition, the press release claimed That Ah Si would appear in a Moschino short skirt like a lady, but the result was not the case. Ah Si explained that a skirt was in fact a skirt, only that she wore long boots underneath. She joked that she only wore a dress because she had no other way. * (11/14/2008) Stephy Tang Lai Yun yesterday appeared on a RoadShow interview to promote her new movie NOBODY'S PERFECT (JUET DOI SEUNG GIU). She has frankly admitted that she had box office expectations for the film, but did not dare to talk about figures because the same period several large productions, she would like the most for the audience to have a good time. That would be enough for her already. In the film Stephy and Kary Ng Yu Fei vilify all their performances, Stephy honestly said that to her and Kary it is a breakthrough, many people refer to their performance as very gross. She does not mind deliberately playing ugly and even thinks it is very fun. As she does not have to take her image into account when she performs she is at a more relaxed mood. However, this time she only makes gross and disgusting gestures without any ugly makeup. She frankly says that she is willing to put on ugly makeup. She would like to play the fat girl character in LOVE ON A DIET (SAU SUN NAM NUI) the most. Who would play the fat guy character? She jokes that is hard to come up with, Andy Lau Tak Wa reprising the role would be the best. Stephy this year focuses on film development, thus she would not have much expectation at the year end award show. However next year she will focus on music development again. HMV record stores are no longer selling Gold Label singers' albums, Stephy said that she is unclear about the matter and has not deliberately asked the company. She believes that the company will resolve that. * (11/14/2008) The movie MEI LANFANG held its official site launch press conference in Beijing yesterday. Attendees included director Chen Kaige, actors Leon Lai Ming, Zhang Ziyi, Chen Hong and Wang Xueqi. At the same time two all new trailers and four character posters were unveiled, the four characters' expressions were lively: the persistently calm Mei Laifang, the refreshingly strong Meng Xiaodong, the tolerant and generous Fu Chifang, and the stubborn 13 Yan were all reflected on the paintings. When Chen Kaige was asked about his box office expectation, his answer led to warm applause at the scene: "We work hard for three years, if this is just an expectation at the box office, three years aren't worth it. Some films aren't made for myself, not for self entertainment, the box office success and failure is only a part of a movie. MEI LANFANG captures Mr. Mei Lanfang's toughness, the spirit of the Chinese people, I hope MEI LANFANG can leave a little something for Chinese culture and for Chinese people." * (11/13/2008) The Hong Kong Open University held two nights ago "the exchange of Motion Picture Arts", the school invited the honorary doctorate and the internationally renowned director Wong Kar Wai as the "creative writing and film art " honorary professor. He shared with students filmmaking experiences and skills. Wong Kar Wai asked with a smile on the stage whether the event has regretted inviting him to attend. Unlike other courses, what he taught would be too special that he would just lecture about his experience in hopes of helping everyone. Wong Kar Wai referred to students as mirrors that could provide him with message and inspiration. He said that some students have asked whether current movies would be a very difficult period and a closed condition for new comers. He said that this is true, but only with difficulty would opportunity ariase. He hoped for future cooperation with students and a group of new blood. After the speech, Wong Kar Wai posed for group photos with students like a scenery board. Director Wong even signed autographs for students. Wong Kar Wai frankly stated that he has not made a movie in Hong Kong in two years, he said that the Tony Leung Chiu Wai starred YUT DOI JUNG SI (MASTER OF A GENERATION) will start production around March or April next year. Will Wai Jai have to gain weight? He joked that Wai Jai wanted to himself and thought that he had to get fat to be able to train muscles. He also joked that Wai Jai at least will have to had six pack abdominal muscle. Reportedly Wai Jai will have a lot of fighting in the film, will he have to fight in every scene? He said with a laugh, "Do you think I have gone crazy? It's not a video game." Wong Kar Wai honestly aid that he was not afraid of any comparison with Donnie Yen Chi Tan's IP MAN. Reportedly Wai Jai has delayed plans to have children for the film, Wong Kar Wai said that he will not as having children and shooting the film will be able to take place at the same time. As Wong Kar Wai's interest in a tailor made movie for Isabella Leong Lok Si? He has not heard that, but he also felt that Isabella Leung was an actor with great potential. However he has not met with her and Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), he said that at this stage he will do other work first. Wong Kar Wai also said, he would like to work with students as this era needs more new comers, with whom new productions will start. For example after CAPE NO. 7, a lot of people would be able to make movies. When asked whether the financial tsunami impact will have filmmaking capital problem? He said that more or less it will be influential, but YUT took a long time to prepare and will not be affected. In addition, Wai Jai was reportedly interested in producing the film. He said Wai Jai has talked about that for a long time, over the past few years, he also had the same idea. This was right, Wai Jai now already had experience and did not need to be too passive. As for rumors that Wai Jai have the idea of setting up his own company, he said: "He has not talked with me about that or about leaving me." * (11/13/2008) Stephy Tang Lai Yun for the first time teams with Kary Ng Yu Fei as the heroines of NOBODY'S PERFECT (JUET DOI SEUNG GIU), which will be released on the 27th of this month. The two fight in the film from beginning to end, in the costume ball scene's fight scene, Stephy and Kary even cast aside their more consistent image and combated hand to hand with each other! In the scene they dressed up to attend a fancy costume party, Stephy wore a Leopard print plunging short skirt with a long tail as the embodiment of a sexy leopard girl; Kary wore a colorful and furry costume witha wild lion look she battled against Stephy. Just on their costumes and make up they already spent three hours. Stephy smiled and said that because the director ordered absolutely no holding back, she tried with every effort to fight. However they did not have any fight experience, so during the shoot because they do not know how to accommodate each other's efforts and added to the hardship. Although after a fight both were in full-body pain, after seeing the result they felt the pain was worthwhile. They also said that no matter what will happen in the future, they would not use force to solve any problem, no point for both of them to get hurt! * (11/13/2008) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung two nights ago attended the movie CHAMPIONS (DUET BIU)'s premiere party. Ting Fung mainly came to support lead actor Dicky Cheung Wai Kin, other guests included Cai Zhiming and his son, Andy Hui Chi On, Edmond Leung Hong Man, Wong Ka Keung, Jacqueline Law Wai Guen, Albert Yeung Sau Sing and the two lead actresses Priscilla Wong Chui-yu and Debbie Goh (Ng Tin Yu). Recently, Isabella Leong Lok Si's Emperor lawsuit has been settled, but the amount of compensation has led to a Rashomon event. Ting Fung was frankly disappointed and thought that people should remember what they came from. Ting Fung came alone two nights ago, he said that his wife was at home to take care of the child. Later his new movie BEAST STALKER (JING YUN) will be released, but she should not attend the premiere. As for Leong Lok Si's Emperor lawsuit, Ting Fung said that due ot his own isolation he did not usually watch entertainment news or television. However on the plane he has seen the news. He said that he has been isolated, and still knew about Leong Lok Si's statement. He said the his first ad was with Isabella Leong, at the time she was only 13 years old. He was a bit disappointed. He asked whether he was disappointed in Leong Lok Si? He said that he never guessed that the matter would turn out like this, he would decide on the issue rather than people; he was not siding with anyone, but he thought the present music and film scenes have been sluggish already, cooking up these things would not look good for artists. In addition people should remember where they came from. He could only hope that something minor would simply vanish. Earlier Ting Fung was rumored to be forming his own company. He said that the contracts with the company was unfinished and felt that the company gave him a great degree of freedom as it was rare to spend 1.5 million on a singer to make a music video. He has forgotten when the contract would end. As for the rumored 2012, he said: "Then it still has three and a half years, that's awhile." Ting Fung also said that under the financial tsunami his salary increased rather than decreased. Many advertisers even offered his son ads with higher compensation than his. Would he considered a family of three ads for 10 million? He only would like his child to have his own childhood, previously he has turned down four or five ads for his son. Earlier he purchased a luxury home, has it turned into negative equity? He said with a laugh that he has always been in negative equity, but individual homes should not be dropped much. In addition they lived in it. Albert Yeung Sau Sing two nights ago declined to comment on Leong Lok Si's statement. Dicky Cheung Wai Kin and Zhang Qian attended together, Zhang Qian obviously lost a lot of weight. Kin Jai said that the girl wanted to lose weight and he could not do anything. Zhang Qian laughed and said that it was too late for him to mind. As for their wedding, Kin Jai said that his wife was responsible and she hoped to design her own wedding gown. He was in favor of the motion because it was cheaper. However, he said that the wedding did not cap the cost as his wife's happiness was the most important. He also bought a diamond ring. On Jai two nights ago came to support Kin Jai. He said, he feared making costume film the most, in the past he tried to appear in costume in his music video and was immediately made fun of. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 18 2008, FILM WORDS NAUGHTY SPY INTERESTING CITIZEN KING The Ying E Chi organized Hong Kong Asia Independent Film Festival is being held at The Grand Theater. Stressing independent, it of course is vastly different from the popular mainstream and the standard is inevitably uneven. However some are strangely interesting, I have seen two Hong Kong independent films that are very playfully naughty. The Chu Ka Yat directed, Hark Chu Ka Keung starred KING OF SPY is one of the opening films. Wonderfully it has only spent HK$5,000 to make a James Bond style "blockbuster", with gun battles, martial art action, conspiracy, love and digital special effects, even a black tie ball. It also talks about revolution and takes very odd twists and turns. The result is without doubt very flawed, trifling, nonsensical, but it dares to make fun with a lot of people participating in the roles of special agents and henchmen. As a matter of fact, Hong Kong has long had fan made gong fu films and gun play films to participate in independent short film competition, but one as "large scale" as KING OF SPY I have never seen before. The TVB comedy artist Johnson Lee Si Jit directed and starred CITIZEN KING has professional standards and creativity. This is the rhapsody of a frustrated Hong Kong film industry fan. The lead longs to break into Hollywood. Constantly stumbling and swindled, he fortunately has friendship and love. Lee Si Jit plays the film fanatic as mad and self-conceit, the entire film is all an individual show off. The lines are in English and Cantonese, the visuals are black and white and color, the film sense is very flexible. The most wonderful are the film's several "reality show"; the most surprising is that he carried a video camera and ran long-distance on the deserted streets, which shows unique talent. The female lead is Farini Chang Yui Ling, the film also has Brian Burrell, Gordon Liu (Lau Ka Fai), Lee Kwok Lun and others. All perform very well. CITIZEN KING is interesting and unique, a rival to the old Peng Ho Cheung film YOU SHOOT, I SHOOT (MAI HUNG PAK YUN). This festival has many films, including from Hong Kong Vincent Chui Won Shun's 3 NARROW GATES and Nicholas Chin Dai Hing's MAGZINE GAP ROAD, neither of which I have seen but want to see. Other Asian films are too numerous and confusing, so far I have only seen two -- another opening film, GOOD MORNING LUANG PRABANG is a rare movie from Laos, in a plain and simple way it describes a handsome mixed heritage photographer who returns to his father's motherland for the first time and develops a relatively with a beautiful female guide. This film mainly introduces the Laos customs, urban and rural landscapes are fascinating and flavorful. The audience can travel in the comfort of their seats. As for the South Koreans made SYNCHING BLUE, it is made in California, the United States and features no dialogue, some sex, but very stuffy and artificially artistic. I do not like it and would rather see the Laos pretty people and places. - SHEK KEI 2. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 17 2008, FILM WORDS CHAMPIONS' martial art is better than its drama I still love the good action movie and still somewhat starve for Chinese kung fu film. Thus when gong fu film expert Tsui Siu Ming made the new film CHAMPIONS, I had some expectations, but the results were less than ideal. The film's martial arts actually is quite an effort, with many award-winning Chinese martial arts athletes participating in the film. However the styles lack innovative, to me as a veteran film viewer they could not be helped as familiar looking. If viewers are not asking for too much, the film has decent action and even introduced the mantis, eagle talon, and other basic skills. The problem is that the story is very far-fetched drama, limited to comedy, melodramatic and patriotic old style common mode, it still has not elevated to detailed special package. CHAPMIONS in conjunction with the year of the Beijing Olympic Games described in a bittersweet manner China's second World Game participation in 1936, the selection of athletes and Chinese martial arts team. Supposedly back then the Republic of China government provided insufficient support and relied on the private sector to raise fund and the players' own hard effort to proceed. The story mainly was the competition between the martial art world, leading to challenges and duels. It also had competition between female runners. Clearly the film was making up drama, using the subject to make fun and tears, stressed the need for unity and solidarity, and sacrifice for the country. The film even had inheritance storm and baby kidnapping plot that had nothing to do with sports, deliberately strengthening drama and fighting but making the story more distorted and nonsensical. The better part of the entire film was the martial art action, which at least do so vivid and exciting; the agility was better than the women's race, which lacked realism. Lead actor Dicky Cheung Wai Kin played a naught kid who constantly made love and played romantic, his fighting stance also was convincing. Yu Rong Guong as the martial arts club chairman remained steady and sound, there is the eldest student's great flexibility, the evil claw clan chief was also very powerful. In addition, Fat Ma (Maria Cordero) brought some laughter. Writer, director, and producer Tsui Siu Ming often only directs popular films that focus on Chinese characteristics, in recent years he has been a third-party producer with BATTLE OF WITS (MUK GUNG), LINGER (WU DIP FEI), THE EQUATION OF LOVE AND DEATH, and other different types of films. He deserved credit for both mainstream and alternative. As for CHAMPIONS, I thought that mentioning the Olympics again was already obsolete. If the film was focused on the challenges it would have been better. In fact, this year's most successful martial arts was not made in China, but the U.S. animated KUNG FU PANDA. CHAMPIONS was very mixed and made me miss the past Chang Cheh, Liu Chia-Liang, Yuen Wo Ping's films that performed even more different style of gong fu. Let us see when the upcoming Hong Kong new release IP MAN could officially achieve real gong fu? - SHEK KEI 3. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 16 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH HONG KONG FILM UNDER SIEGE FROM ALL SIDES The global financial tsunami has taken place for nearly a month, everyone has been talking about its effect on the Hong Kong film industry. Basically there are three different views. Some people think the financial tsunami has just begun, Hong Kong film investors, like all other investors, will be subject to the negative impact and reduce film investment. Thus next year's production rate will be less than this year's. Another view is that Hong Kong's biggest film market has always been Mainland. China's financial tsunami damage should be lower than in Europe and America, so film should not have any large revenue decline; the Mainland film market every year has had double-digit percentage growth, so the Mainland market could be the back up support of Hong Kong films. Hong Kong film still could survive. A third view is more optimistic. Because the financial tsunami has hit the United States the hardest, the United States film production should be significantly reduced. As a result of the relationship between supply and demand, film productions in other regions will benefit. In other words, Hong Kong film thus stands to have a better sales. All three views in one way or other would be proven in time. In the face of global economic recession, any investment will be reduced -- an indisputable fact; thus the law of supply and demand at this time cannot play a role. As for whether Mainland would suffer less impact, at present it is too early to say; if we look at the Hong Kong film industry conditions, the Mainland market is where the key lies. Several Hong Kong-listed film company in the first half of the year have seen "red" in their performance; one of the largest film production companies throughout the year so far has not released a movie, which is the best example of the Hong Kong film ice age that months ago the writer has written about. More than a month ago, there is still no global financial tsunami. Hong Kong film has already showed weakness. As of the end of last month, Hong Kong had 43 Chinese film releases, the box office exceeded the same period last year's total amount by more than 100,000,000. However, the Chinese film's box office percentage share is less than last year. In other words, the film market is better than the last year, but Hong Kong film performance has continued to decline. This year THE DARK KNIGHT made 60,000,000 yuan, CJ7 made 50 million, and RED CLIFF made more than 20,000,000, what have these films reflected? Hollywood each year has a number of large films, Stephen Chow Sing Chi and John Woo (Ng Yu SUm) make one every few years, other small and medium-sized Chinese-language film in Hong Kong should be pleasantly surprised with 10 million. Hong Kong film's declining situation has not improved. With this year being the Olympic year, Mainland approval dragged on for a long time, so that the Mainland and Hong Kong co-production film release dates were constantly postponed. With both internal and external ails, before the end of the year anyone can already predict that this year's box office revenue must be less than last year. If Mainland co-productions' regulation and inspection process can be streamline, it would be the biggest help Hong Kong films. The rise and Fall of the other markets are not important because its revenue and the Mainland market's is disproportionate. - TIN LIK 4. MING PAO DAILY, NOVEMBER 13 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR CHINESE FILMS Hong Kong films avoided the summer Olympics, larger films only emerged around Christmas and the end of the year. Christmas foreign films are not considered too strong, Chinese films have hopes to perform better. Let's see whether cinema circuits would support them. The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred IP MAN will open December 18, this film had a subject conflict with Wong Kar Wai's not yet in production for years YUT DOI JUNG SI (MASTER OF A GENERATION). The Wong Kar Wai version stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai as Yip Man, so far it still has not started production. Leung Chiu Wai and Yen Chi Man respectively both played Ip Man and their styles would certainly be distinct. Wong Kar Wai and Wilson Yip Wai Shun's direction also took an entirely different approaches. The same character in two movies would not caused any major conflict, unfortunately the films could not be released around the same time. According to Wong Kar Wai's past production speed, the comparison would have awhile to wait. The Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Eason Chan Yik Shun starred LADY COP AND PAPA CROOK (DAI SAU CHA JI NUI) has finally been approved, on January 1 next year it will officially open. Its after Christmas release may be out of fear that too many pre-Christmas film releases would lead to a cinema shortage. LADY COP AND PAPA CROOK is Alan Mak Siu fai and Felix Chong Man Keung directed, which is certainly worth watching. The approval process dragged on for some time. Originally intended for the end the Olympic Games September release, later a November release was rumored. Finally it was postponed until January 1 next year. The Mainland approval came at a price, reportedly more than 10 minutes of this film was cut. Who knows whether Hong Kong and Mainland versions will be the same? Other Chinese films include Chen Kaige MEI LANFANG. It is not considered a Hong Kong film but starred Leon Lai Ming. Originally it also has there Ah Gil Gillian Chung Yun Tung, reportedly her role finally has been cut. After a long production, the PTU sequel will be released on January 1. PTU was Johnnie To Kei Fung's stylish film years ago. In recent years reportedly several sequels were made, with To Kei Fung as the producer and Vincent Lo (Law Wing Cheung) and Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung) as the directors respectively, The soon to be released one will likely be Vincent Lo's work. Vincent Lo has been Johnnie To's right-hand man, mostly his long-term executive director. He officially has directed 2 BECOME 1 (TIN SUN YUT DUI) and HOOKED ON YOU (MUI DONG BIN WAN SI), both starred Miriam Yeung Chin Wa. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Wan Dai Jor Lit : Play Too Big d. Opening October 30 2008 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Bingo has stolen away the girlfriend of his crime syndicate boss, and now he faces an ultimatum: find him a legendary assassin named Della Togashi, or die. But time is running out and Della’s whereabouts remain moot. As a desperate measure, Bingo decides to hire a failing actor, Taiki Murata to play the part of the elusive assassin. Believing he’ll be starring in an epic gangster film in the role of his life, Taiki comes to the port town of Sucago, where the film is to be shot. In his attempt to convince his boss that he has found Della Togashi, Bingo inadvertently winds up indenturing Taiki into the service of the town’s crime syndicate just as it prepares for a major gang war. Opening October 30 2008 Site : http://www.tiff08.ca/filmsandschedules/films/detroitmetalcity [ TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2008 ] Souichi is a timid, sensitive and innately polite music geek who moves from the Japanese countryside to Tokyo with big dreams: he aspires to sing sugary love ballads and become a chart-topping sensation. But life does not turn out the way Souichi had hoped, and the only gig he can get is that of front man for the notorious band Detroit Metal City (DMC). Wearing a cape, tights and ghostly demon makeup, Souichi storms the stage each night as Johannes Klauser II, smashing guitars and spewing verbal filth in songs about murder and rape. The band's crazy getups and destructive performances have earned them a legion of devoted, maniacal fans, who believe that Klauser is a drug-gobbling demon from hell. To make matters worse, this reluctant rocker runs into his college crush, the demure and adorable Ms. Aikawa, who is now a magazine pop critic. Soon he is struggling to keep his wild metal stardom a secret. After defeating rival bands and winning recognition as one of Japan's top acts, DMC is challenged to a duel by death-metal icon Jack IL Dark. Souichi finds himself locked in a battle of satanic guitar riffs for the title of ultimate death-metal king, all while keeping Ms. Aikawa sweetly ignorant of his alter ego.
