MISCELLANEOUS * (10/29/2008) Leon Lai Ming's first MEI LANFANG film poster has finally been released, on the poster Lai Ming was absolutely gorgeous in an androgynous woman costume. Lai Ming for this look spent 6 hours a day on make-up and hair, then put on a variety of heavy headdress. Everyday on the set was quite a headache for him. In the poster Mei Lanfang in RAINBOW CLEARANCE played a concubine who was lost in the love in all her Oriental style, and Mei Lanfang back then was a man off stage but on stage a woman who drove men mad and women envious. Chen Kaige from the beginning chose Lai Ming whose temperament was close to Mei Lanfang to star, and Lai Ming did not disappoint as the entire Mei family has fully recognized his performances. Lai Ming himself expressed, "Playing Mei Lanfang has changed my life!" Also recently Chen Kaige in a Mainland interview expressed that the film has been basically completed. Currently some post production work remains in Japan. As everyone was concerned with whether Gillian Chung Yun Tung's role will be preserved, he thanked Ah Gil for her contribution to the film but also had to consider many other factors. * (10/29/2008) Dicky Cheung Wai Kin in the Tsui Siu Ming directed CHAMPIONS (DUET BIU) has given up everything for his performance. Because the film is about real gong fu, the real martial arts, he has to personally perform each fight scenes. In one scene, Dicky not only had to take a five inch in diameter bamboo staff in the chest, but also a cigar under his arm. However, Dicky was more afraid about the underarm cigar burn scene more. "Because earlier I was once burnt during a series production, with any fire scene, whether large or small, I would be a little worried. This time I was even more afraid with cigar burnt! The skin under the arm was softer and more sensitive, as soon as it was burnt it would hurt a lot. In addition if the hair was burnt and left a circle underarm what would I do? Yet Brother Siu Ming was good. He rehearsed with me ten times and in the end the shot only took one time. However my underarm hair was sacrificed." * (10/29/2008) The Hong Kong Asian Independent Film Festival 2008 press conference was held in Wan Chai. MAGAZINE GAP ROAD actor Carl Ng Ka Lung and CITIZEN KING actress Farini Cheung Yui Ling attended. Ng Ka Lung expressed that his father Richard Ng Yiu Hong in the film also played a role. His character in the film had a relationship with a "high class chicken", but these women were only the kept type. He claimed to be a traditional man. In the reality he might mind his girlfriend's past, but if he loved this woman a lot perhaps he would accept it. Cheung Yui Lin expressed that in the film she worked with Johnson Lee Si Jit. She said that this time she did not take any salary as a favor because the production team and the director were very sincere. * (10/28/2008) Stephen Chan Chi Wan yesterday invited film star Donnie Yen Chi Tan to be on his BE MY GUEST. Chan Chi Wan presented the world's smallest projector to Chi Tan because he knew that he liked to take pictures. Chi Tan has just worked with Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) in the film IP MAN. Did he asked her about her love life? He said that he did not need to because after reading the newspaper everyone knew. He felt that each person should have personal space. Whether she would like to share it with others she would decide and it was none of his business. Chi Tan's PAINTED SKIN (WAT PEI) in Mainland has made over 200 million yuan. Would he get a raise? He said that actors are like stocks. When the stock drops it would automatically adjust. However he has been luckier, as an action actor the drop was less in the market. * (10/28/2008) The Hong Kong Asian Film Festiva 2008 closing ceremony took place two nights ago at the IFC cinema. Closing film CLAUSTROPHOBIA (CHUN MUK)'s actors Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Karena Lam Ka Yun and the film DADA's actor Zhang Yuan and Li Xin-Yun were present at the closing ceremony. Lam Ka Yun earlier was busy in Beijing with the film OI CHING JOR DUNG YAU HUNG (LOVE LEFT ARRIVAL RIGHT WALK) and attending the Tokyo Film Festival. While working in Beijing, Ka Yun worked with 12 actors but has not had any chance to develop anything with them. Ka Yun said, "They are all married and are often talking about their babies, which makes me want to have one. yet I still haven't found the other half because my life circle is very small." Eric Tsang Wai's son Tsang Kwok Cheung has just completed a screenplay and now is looking for an investor. Kwok Cheung pointed out that Papa has given him a lot of ideas and urged him to come up with more commercial angles to shoot it. As for whether he would ask the cast to take a pay cut, he said, "9 out of 10 films don't have a lot of financing, many actors don't mind take a little less." * (10/27/2008) Recently busy with his concert tour, Eaosn Chan Yik Shun is not only selling his records and concerts but also has become an advertising darling. Recently he has become a spokesman for a juice beverage and yesterday he appeared in a promotion. Eason worked with Sammi cheng Sau Man on the film LADY COP AND PAPA CROOK (DAI SAU CHA JI NUI) earlier did not receive Mainland approval and its release has been postponed. Most recently the film was finally passed, which Eason was very happy to learn about and promised to help with the promise as he looked forward to this film a lot. Boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok expressed that if he had a good screenplay he would approach him again. He expressed that he would have to look at the box office first, at least he would have to have some number. Did he want to name his salary based on the numbers? Eason clarified that he was not thinking like that. He just wanted to remind himself to perform even harder. * (10/27/2008) The Kary Ng Yu Fei and Stephy Tang Lai yun starred Gold Label film NOBODY'S PERFECT (JUET DOI SEUNG GIU) will be released on November 27. Stephay this time plays a harsh show business columnist who is controversial with her words. Kary plays Tsui Giu who has no career ambition and operates a traditional clothing store in the old district. Stephy claims that she has always been mild mannered and polite to people, so playing a harsh character truly was very hard. During the shoot she and Kary had to keep going back and forth and they had to rehearse for awhile first. In the film Stephy played a strong office lady. She was not used to the office clothing because she has never worked in one. Ordinarily she had very little opportunity to wear suit. This time she was lucky enough to try and she felt lucky that she has become an artist. She did not need to be trapped inside an office all day. Stephy is the office boss in the film, HotCha was her subordinates who often received orders from her; before the shoot HotCha did some research with their office friends. In addition, "counterfeit Gaile Lok" Chow Sau Na played a cleaning lady at the office. This time she absolutely "sacrificed her looks". Her hair was a mess and even wore a big frame reading glasses. * (10/27/2008) Charlie Yeung Choi Nei two nights ago attended a skin care brand press conference at Causeway Bay. Shu Qi a few days ago expressed that she would lower her salary to support the film industry after the financial tsunami. Would Charlie follow suit? She dared not say how much she would cut. Right now she is making movies not just for money. Sometimes for the film industry, when she negotiated film salary with the director she would not ask for too much. Making the movie good was the most important and she hoped that no one would be too pessimistic. * (10/27/2008) Dicky Cheung Wai Kin earlier appeared on a cable program. In the past Kin Jai has been linked with his co-stars like Alvina Kong Yun Yin, Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen) and Zhang Qian. Did he easily fall for the lead actress? He joked that he did not fall for CHAMPIONS' Priscilla Wong Chui Yi. He said that he actually has been very faithful. Even when actresses asked him out he would turn them down. He felt that he had a lot of self control and would not ask actresses for phone numbers. In addition, two days ago Kin Jai and CHAMPIONS director Tsui Siu Ming, producer Amy Li Fengming, lead actresses Wong Chui Yi, Debbie Goh (Ng Tin Yu) and Xie Miu promoted the film in Shenzhen and meet with the audience in three cinemas. Kin Jai never guessed that the Shenzhen cinema decoration would be so elegant. Because he was so tired, he dared not sit in the seats out of fear of falling asleep. * (10/25/2008) New film CHAMPIONS (DUET BIU) yesterday held a press conference at the Metro radio. Director Tsui Siu Ming, actors Dicky Cheung Wai Kin, Priscilla Wong Chui Yu, Debbie Goh (Ng Tin Yu), Xie Miu attended. Tsui Siu Ming demonstrated the mantis fist and guided everyone to the right position to demonstrate the film was shot with real gong fu. Releasing in Hong Kong next month, CHAMPIONS a week ago held a screening at the Beijing University for 2,000 students and professors. Cheung Wai Kin said that the screening response was decently, he said: "Because Mainland students analyze the film very carefully, I initially worried about the possibility of negative comments, but fortunately there were a lot of laughter and applause, after all that I felt comfort." During the shooting his wife Zhang Qian had a miscarriage, which made work hard for him. Kit Jai said, "Originally I was already used to making comedy, but because of trouble at home, half of my emotions was tears and the other half is to find ways to solve the problem. At that time, I only had two choices, either resign or put your family behind and get into the shoot." When asked whether he cried a lot during the shoot, Kin Jai nodded quietly, "At the time I had a lot of pressure because the media kept shooting on the set, under this difficult circumstances, it truly was a great test and challenge." As for a make up wedding banquet, Kit Jai said that after the premiere he would be busy with publicity campaigns. For the time being there is still no clear date. He said: "It won't be in Hong Kong or Beijing and should be abroad. If the box office would be ideal we may have another one in Hong Kong. Then any viewer who went to the movie would be able to attend with the ticket stub." As for the wedding of his friend Edmond Leung Hong Man, Kit Jai said that he definitely will attend. He joked, "In fact, I would like to wed on the same day as Leung Hong Man, then I can steal away his news. " Wong Chui Yu praised Kit Jai for taking care of her during the shoot. She used to always watch his comedy, but at work he was very serious. She said: "He is a very serious person in front of the camera. When he calls he is very gentle, maybe he is on the phone with his wife." When asked whether Kit Jai has invited her to his wedding, she said, "I don't know if he has determined the date. If it is a joyous event, he should ask everyone in CHAMPIONS to go together." * (10/24/2008) Emperor Motion Picture BEAST STALKER (JING YUN) yesterday held a press conference in Beijing. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin led actors Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Zhang Jingchu, and Miao Pu in attendance. Ting Fung even said that he has never been so tired from a film production. Ting Fung said, "That tiredness is a torture of the soul. In the film everyday I hate and blame myself. At the same time I worry everyday that my performance can't reach the director's expectation of me. Because I have scenes with a six year old girl, I can't ask her to repeat the performance over a dozen times. Even though I can I wouldn't have the heart to di that to her. So there is always pressure. In addition, I have never cried like that on the screen. When I finish a crying scene I would hold that girl and give her a kiss to thank her. Because without you, this film is not real." In another scene Ting Fung had to go through garbage in the dump, for realism he even covered his hands with left over. The stench made the crew covered their noses but his expression did not change. Zhang Jingchu also publicly praised Ting Fung. She said, "Actually my impression of Ting Fung is always handsome, quite an individual and stylish, like this world is only just him. I understand that why so many girls are his fans, he is too cool." A reporter asked her how she would rate her co-stars Andy Lau Tak Wa and Tse Ting Fung, she was stumped. Finally she could only smooth it over that both were very great actors. * (10/24/2008) In the Sil-Metropole, Media Asia Films, Enko film company joint production TOH FA WON (PEACH BLOSSOM LUCK), CRAZY STONE's lead actor Guo Tao and Yuan Qiu performed one of the love story. Sister Qiu pointed out that the most memorable was the bed scene. Because she rarely made bed scenes and this time she even had to be a very passionate condition in bed, she was very embarrassed. In addition, the day of the shoot was the second day that she has met Guo Tao. She joked that she was fine with gong fu but being gentle was very hard. During play back she was not at ease at all. Guo Tao was the most afraid of crying scenes. In one scene Sister Qiu decided to leave all of her assets to him. The director asked him to shed tears, but men rarely cried and he did not know how to cry. Luckily he received help from Sister Qiu to get into character and the final result was decent. TOH FA WON's director is the Tokyo Film Festival award winning Ma Liwen. Aside from Guo Tao and Yuan Qiu the film also has other heavyweight class actors like Vivian Wu, Ge You, and Fan Bingbing. It is expected to be released in mid January. * (10/23/2008) The Billion Club opening party took place two nights ago. Attending artists included Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Janice Man, Cara G., and Sam Lee Chan Sam. Recently due to a bad market, Shu Qi took the initiative to reduce her salary by 30%. Chau Sun pointed out that Shu Qi had good intention but while she alone reduced her salary at least 20 actors increased theirs. He felt that the higher salaries can be reduced, but his, Cheung Ka Fai's and Francis Ng Chun Yu's tend to be low so they can be increased. He joked that after so many years he still cannot buy a personal jet or hot car. He also does not dare to tell people that he is a star. He only tells people that he works three jobs. Chau Sun also feels that salary reduction is not the best idea. He pointed out that Hong Kong film has run its course as a movie can be made in 7 or 70 days. Hong Kong has nothing left to offer a long time ago; however, he claims that he has been lucky enough not to be impacted. Cheung Ka Fai feels that salary is negotiable depending on the director and co-stars as well as the situation and the level of sacrifice. He also praised Shu Qi as a girl who has been rolling abroad for years and her willingness to reduce her salary shows sincerity. Everyone should also understand each other. Yet actors should not be the first to take pay cuts. He himself has not asked for a raise in 13 years and has always been a low pay employee. * (10/23/2008) Priscilla Wong Chui Yu and Debbie Goh (Ng Tin Yu) in CHAMPIONS (DUET BIU) play track athletes. In order to be at their best for the performance they both trained with running and weights. They could then be more in character and of course get into shape to look more like track athletes. In one scene Wong Chui Yu participated in a race with blindfold. Because her eyes were covered, with her usual poor sense of direction she was already running into things during places. She had to rely on the crew to bring her to the right position. When she was in place she ran several dozen paces and already she was no longer in a straight line. She either passed her lane or ran into her runner in the next lane. Finally, she needed several assistants to continuously remind her the direction to run before she was able to complete this race without sight scene. She said, "I now realize that pain of not being able to see. Aside from what I can do, I would urge my friends to help the blind in everyday life." * (10/23/2008) This afternoon, the China and U.S. co-production romance BEIJING IS WAITING held a global premiere in Beijing. International superstar Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), China Film Group chairman Han Sanping and famous film professionals Lu Chuan, Wang Xiaoshuai, Gao Yuanyaun attended the premiere. At the premiere, the film producer, screenwriter and director Zhang Lun expressed that the entire proceed of the film will be donated to charity and presented Lee Nin Kit's One Foundation with 1 million yuan to assist with the Sichuan disaster area elementary school of hope. Lee Nin Kit at the premiere expressed, since the One Foundation's inception it has received the support of hundreds of corporations. He would give thanks everyday in his hearts. He said, "I everyday would thank three types of people. The first is everyone, including different nations, different races, difference classes. The second is people who have expressed doubts and well meaning criticism for the One Foundation. You let me know where I am lacking, enable me to continue to learn and continue myself. The third type is people who viciously attack the One Foundation. You have made me stronger." At the premiere, famous Chinese violinists Sheng Zhongguo and his wife performed the BUTTERFLY LOVERS. Singer Chen Chusheng performed the film's Chinese theme song HAS ANYONE TOLD YOU. After the premiere the cast members will also visit Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming to meet with fans. Reportedly, filmmakers from China, the U.S., France, Iraq and other nations completed BEIJING IS WIATING together. The story revolves around several young people from different nations but live together in Beijing while the Iraq War, China's "atypical" events serve as backdrops. The lead actor is from the U.S. and the lead actress Song Liqing is a former Miss Canada. Another important supporting actress Hu Tingting is the daughter of Taiwan's Taichung mayor. The film at this year's AOF International film festival won the "outstanding director contribution" and "Best Cinematography" awards. Director Zhang Lun expressed that the film will also participate in next year's Golden Global Award and the Oscars. * (10/23/2008) The third annual Rome International Film Festival took place between October 22 and 30. The Tsui Hark directed THE MISSING (SUM HOI CHUM YUN) was the closing film. When it was screened on the 30th, one of the producers Shi Nansun appeared on the red carpet with Tsui Hark to represent the film's acceptance of this honor. Film boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming was very happy that the film has become the closing film, but the two lead actresses Angelica Lee Sinjie and Isabella Leong Lok Si could not attend the closing ceremony due to work. Isabella said, "I very much regret that I cannot attend this time, but I am very happy that the film has received everyone's recognition." Lee Sinjie expressed that although the shoot was very tough, today with the film receiving the recognition and love from the world's film professionals all the effort was worth it." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, OCTOBER 29 2008, FILM WORDS ZHOU XUN AND THE ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL In Hong Kong Asian Film Festival I watched a new Mainland film THE EQUATION OF LOVE AND DEATH, which is mixed. The most prominent is Zhou Xun as a Kunming taxi driver who is obsessed with her missing boyfriend from four years ago. She is still completely distracted and later runs into the "ingrate" who is on the wrong track with suspense and the sentimental drama. Vicki Zhao Wei and Zhou Xun are the lead actresses of the recent miracle box-office Strange Stories film PAINTED SKIN, Zhao Wei has also played a female taxi driver in this year's Chinese Panorama screening of THE LONGEST NIGHT IN SHANGHAI, but this Chinese Japanese romantic comedy is too nonsensical and is no match for Zhou Xun's THE EQUATION's outstanding performance. The Fifth Anual Hong Kong Asian Film Festival is now over, I saw about 10 films. The best leading actress is Zhou Xun. The best leading actor is the Iranian poverty film SONGS OF THE SPARROW's middle age father who loses his job when an ostrich escapes. Luckily he has a motorcycle to transport passengers and goods. His performance is very real and touching. He also won this year's Berlin Film Festival Best Actor. This year the "Director-in-Focus" is Turkey's Ceylan, artistically dull yet stylish. His new film THREE MONKEYS is about an erotic murder case and has won this year's Cannes Film Festival Best Director. Actually better were his two previous films DISTANT and CLIMATES. I watched again DISTANT that was completely absent of mystery but still was excellent. It describes a young country boy who looks for a job in Istanbul and stays with his photographer cousin, very delicate and painstaking. Japan neighborhood nostalgic piece ALWAYS - SUNSET OF THIRD STREET is especially warm and intimate, with laughter and tears. This column has already discussed it. As for Hong Kong films, the Vincent Lo (Law Wing Cheung) directed, Simon Yam Tat Wa, Maggie Siu Mei Kei starred TACTICAL UNIT - THE CODE continues where PTU left off. It is particularly calm and has done quite well. At the closing ceremony I saw the Ong Sai written and directed CLAUSTROPHOBIA, with Karena Lam Ka Yun and Ekin Cheng as its stars. It intertwined a male and a female employee's day-to-day business in an office, wonderfully with anti-drama, anti-timing it describes a crush and becomes a rare and uncommonly subtle work, completely in a style of its own. Lam Chun Yu's youth romance SOME LIKE IT HOT has beautiful girls, handsome men, gay love and dumb guys. It romances and makes fun, ripe for the young audience but not mature enough. There are many films I did not see, some will be shown, including the popular Taiwanese movie CAPE NO. 7. Hopefully the new director award winning Taiwan film PARKING will also have the opportunity to be released. This film festival has more and more viewers, but has parted ways unpleasantly with co-organizer Ying E Chi in a controversy. Ying E Chi next month will host the Hong Kong Asia Independent Film Festival. - SHEK KEI 2. MING PAO DAILY, OCTOBER 29 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS THE RISK OF SINGER PERFORMANCE ABROAD Ivana Wang Yuen Chi while performing abroad with Hins Cheung King Hin, as a result of contract problems, was detained for several hours and was also held at knife point. People outside think performing abroad is a lot of fun, as performers can both go on vacation and get paid, actually some situations are unknown to outsiders. Not every Hong Kong singer who performs abroad would have official and sizable organizers, and not all contracts and procedures are clear. Hong Kong artists' foreign invitations are often through intermediaries. Some of the intermediary companies have been operating for many years. Even if they are not the big companies, they have already established a certain reputation. Some have been commissioned as a result of personal connections to invite Hong Kong singers to the local stage. If they do not have to cover production and only have to be the intermediary contact, the middleman job is very easy if you can invite singers that they want. However, if such communication is poor and something is hidden, trouble is easy to get into. For example, singer received a price, just to sing some songs, how much time off, in the light of the contract to write clearly, it should be no problem. But the singer invited to perform the boss may not understand, a lot of head still in the old days, some people say or write a contract that is the case, people have come to the negotiations. The entertainment business is often powerful, has a different logic, such as singers do not find them face to use other means to achieve their aims. I have heard a lot of financial disputes arise, such as pre-agreed to perform fully repaid before the payment, but singers arrived at the local, is another's speech. Usually before hand really down payment, or who will not singers Shadao coming out as scheduled, but the local people is different, it may have to pay for post-performance, and even concluded that the poor performance without pay ending. A number of experienced managers, such as that there were problems in the opening show before the singer sent to other places, and to ensure their safety. - KWOK HIN CHING 3. MING PAO DAILY, OCTOBER 28 2008, FILM WORDS TICKETS' MOVING FAMILY LOVE Director Jacob Cheung Chi Leung followed the large ancient Warring States period epic A BATTLE OF WITS (MUK GUNG) with a return to his favorite human well-being subjects that described "poor parents" family love. Cheung Chi Leung's works has always been made in good faith, but often with more good faith than results; in particular, this one was especially obvious and fortunately indeed was touching. TICKETS was based on Taiwan Professor Li Chia-tung's short story about a Catholic nuns raised orphan with two old tickets looked for his birth parents. The film replaced the old Taiwan background with Mainland China, the male orphan was also changed to a woman who became a Beijing television reporter. The story is this beautiful female lead (Zuo Xiaoqing), with the IT expert who grew up with her (Nicky Wu), returned to Yunnan to find her birth parents. The film took in a lot of unique scenery in the Yunnan ethnic minority areas, with snowy peaks, white water, bridges, the Tea-Horse Road, towns and villages that are extraordinarily beautiful and dangerous. It also had ancient churches, simple primary schools, stair field like sun terrace, toiling cattle and villagers. The film was rich with the human touch and local flavor, but felt inadequate. Male and female players resembled spoiled modern stars too much, unlike the native born who succeeded later in the big city in adulthood. They seemed out of tune with the Yunnan locale. In addition, filming in Mainland must make any public officials as good, which made the story rather "melodramatic". Fortunately the latter development was touching. The protagonists finally found a hint in the poor mountain village, got further confirmation and experienced the labor of motherly love. They finally got to the bottom that was mixed with joy and sorrow. The mother who remained hidden became the soul of the film. Cecilia Yip Tung was decent as a warm and cordial nun, Wu Ma, and Chin Siu Ho also participated, but Hong Kong film professionals as Mainlander ultimately were less than realistic. The film also had two other stories in recognition of parental love, but the result was mediocre. The best part of the whole film was the not very clearly mother, who was better than directly described characters. Over 20 years Cheung Chi Leung has made all types of films, with successes and failures. His representative works were CHINA'S LAST EUNUCH, BEYOND THE SUNSET, CAGEMAN, INTIMATES, and others. He was not a complete style director; his better work may not have sufficient sense but always had heart and effort, therefore, the poorer films also had some good parts. TICKETS was like that, as a whole it was not satisfactory but the latter part was decent. Actually, I am a little scared to see the sincerity films; however, I admire his perseverance and his ability to get the opportunity to begin shooting. - SHEK KEI 4. MING PAO DAILY, OCTOBER 26 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS WHAT KIND OF SALARY IS CONSIDERED TOO HIGH How much do stars' salaries have to be to be considered high? Anthony Wong Chau Sun said in public a few days ago that his pay was low so he would not take a pay cut to rescue the market. He jokingly said that he was not a star because he still had no private jet. In Hong Kong, only two or three stars could possibly take a private jet, and not even regularly. Many Hollywood movie star often specified private jet transportation, but also have their own. Hong Kong movie star salary greatly differ from Hollywood stars for only one reason - their film market was larger than ours. Although the situation today was like that, but China has a billion population; if fully open, the market would be a very big and enough for our stars to have higher revenue. The Greater China market together although remained behind the current Hollywood film's world market, but also be able to bear higher production costs. In other words, popular stars of the Chinese market would have a better day. Unfortunately, the Chinese market has not opened up as imagined. All conditions have been met, only the link of approval was stuck. We often said that Hong Kong star salaries were high, the salaries themselves were market determined. Yet in the past indeed there was a problem. Star salary exceeded the market ability to bear it mainly because some major film companies and investors blindly believed in stars' box-office abilities, which enabled them to increase their salaries and the cost of film production costs. In turn the cast cost ratio became higher and higher. If a star was hired, film sales would immediately upgrade abroad to at least equal to the salary. It could be said that the salary was reasonable because his value was immediately reflected in the film income. Yet if the overseas sale price has not increased due to him, the box office would not have greater assurance due to. In other words the film could have been with or without him, but the salary was a considerable proportion of the entire movie cost. Then that could be called too high salary. - KWOK HIN CHING 5. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 26 2008 BEIJING OLYMPICS PLANNING ALL DOCUMENTED IN DREAM 2008 In August 2008, the Chinese fulfilled the Olympic dream of a century. Seven years ago, in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, the Central new documentary film studio director Gu Jun and tens of thousands of people waited for word from the International Olympic Committee about Beijing's successful Olympic bid. With documentary dreams Gu Jun then spent seven years in order to record with the camera the National Stadium "Bird's Nest" incubation, the birth of the athletes, as well as the general public's "pre Olympic life". Bringing the audience endless space for imagination and the continuation of a dream is to DREAM WEAVERS -- BEIJING 2008. In the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the South China Film Industry Workers Union organized the "Chinese Film Panorama 2008 - - commemorate the 30th anniversary of the China's Reform and Opening-Up", a documentary caught special attention because it evoked rather recent memories of a sweet Chinese dream. DREAM WEAVERS -- BEIJING 2008 is China's first large-scale Olympic documentary film that shows the seven year course of the Beijing Olympic Games planning. Director Gu Jun with Beijing Olympic main venue, the National Stadium "bird's nest" design competition, the selection and construction process for the past seven years as the main plot weaved a different characters' stories, including architects, three gymnasts, gold medal track and field athlete Liu Xiang, the Gao family that had to relocate due to the construction of the "nest", as well as the special police responsible for security. The International Olympic Committee's evaluation of the film was very high, and its President Rogge even personally provided the film's English title DREAM WEAVERS -- BEIJING 2008. Bird's Nest As the Center Gu Jun in an interview expresses that the film enables everyone to witness true history without any educational subject. She only hopes that everyone will be able to remember this piece of history and everyone in it, because whether it is the construction of the "nest" or The training of athletes, the Beijing Olympic Games' entire preparation process was not easy at all. Looking back seven years ago on the night in which she witnessed Beijing's successful Olympic bid, she said that that shocking moment would be forever engraved in her mind. "The news from Moscow echoed in the streets of Beijing, I am shocked, but even more shocking to me was the jubilant crowd. That night everyone came out, no one slept, that excitement was especially hard to forget; I opened the film with the use of a dark screen in order to express that kind of sounds." She added, "Then my film brought out the question of how do we prepare for the Olympic Games. From the routine, we must first have their own venue. This film's center was the 'Bird's Nest' because it was a symbol that not only represented Beijing, but also the Olympic Games. In addition it started the soonest and ended the latest, I will use it to measure time." Liu Xiang Bears Huge Pressure Cold steel construction and human nature description make an interesting reflection that also reminds people where a dream starts, the director as a neutral and objective documentarian, lets the story take form step by step. "I was thinking, the construction of the National Stadium will lead to demolition and relocation, how would those people look at the Olympic Games? This was the second question that I considered. As a result, I searched through more than 300 families one by one to look for a typical person, the type who is neither in radical opposition nor saying anything about the government. In addition the person also had to be very simple and real, oblivious to the camera. Now in the film Big Mama Gao didn't know what the camera meant, she thought I came to take pictures and even asked me to send her the pictures later. Finally I often looked to her for chats." She says with a laugh. She chose to shoot gymnasts because she felt women's gymnastics was very beautiful, but the training period was very long and sports career was very short. The sport thus had its own peculiarities. "The most important reason is that for the 2008 Olympic Games gymnastics started the preparation the soonest. In 2003 I began to pick the athletes, then they were called 'reserve athletes' who were specifically preparing for 2008. This was a very critical point that attracted me. In addition, I also chose to shoot Liu Xiang because track and field was one of China's weaknesses as a whole, but Liu Xiang was the 2004 Olympic 110 meters hurdles champion. He really was terrific, since then he has become an idol in the eyes of all Chinese people. Because too many people were concerned about him, he didn't even dare to walk the streets. Then I thought, while the gold medal has brought him fame what kind of historical pressure has it brought him at the same time? I would like to express the the enormous pressure that Liu Xiang faced." The Director Is Also Weaving A Dream Before directing DREAM WEAVER -- BEIJING 2008, Gu Jun have been in the field of documentary film for 10 years. Originally studying to shoot feature films, she fell in love with documentary at the first contact and found their own direction. In her view, the documentary was not only true based on facts, but also a process of investigation and evidence collection. "To explain your own point of view requires supportive arguments, the documentary is not easy to design as it requires to have a wide range of reading, learning a lot of knowledge, a lot of preparation, and investigation of a lot of information and interview a lot of people, as well as speculation on the progress direction, and on the scene adaptability, so the whole process represents the individual's tracks of thinking; and precisely this kind of unpredictability when involving many different industries, opens up one after another door of knowledge on its own, this is the happiness that documentary film has brought me." A movie that has taken seven years to make should have substantial difficulties and risks, the director also frankly stated that the hardship of this film arose at any time. "Before I started I only had one very simple outline, fortunately the leader who believed in me was very supportive of me and understood that the documentary was unpredictable. Being the documentarian wasn't easy, requiring a great deal of persistence and courage. Because if a documentary can't return the cost, it would not receive another investment. The making of DREAM WEAVER -- BEIJING 2008 had an annual budget of only 300,000 yuan, to my own convictions and fulfilling a documentary dream, I had to find additional money." During the shoot she continued to think, building her own point of view with the pile of facts in front of her. However when asked how she would like the audience to think after watching the film, she said that whatever the audience would like think they should and she could not lead them to think. "But you from my film language will be able to read my thought; the film rarely had narrative because I believed that viewers had the ability to think. People who like to watch documentary definitely would be full of interest in the world and watch with the spirit of exploration." In fact, Gu Jun has also weaved a dream of making China's best documentary. The seven years of DREAM WEAVER -- BEIJING 2008 were a test for her, after passing it came time to build an even bigger dream. As for her new dream, she said that now she only wanted to do a good job with the official Olympic film, "Beijing Olympic Games". Every Olympic Games would have an official film to retain the glorious history, the 2008 Olympic Games' official film "Beijing Olympics" is a large investment and the large mobilization production, and she is the chief director. - SIU O 6. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 26 2008 FAREWELL TO XIE JIN AND SON Director of HONG SE NIANG ZI JUN, STAGE SISTERS, HIBISCUS TOWN and OPIUM WAR, Xie Jin died two Saturday ago. This newspaper has extensively reported on it, we mourn while also expressing respect to the master Xie Jin. Master Xie's life last Sunday has been detailed in major newspapers, tragically, Xie Jin's eldest son Xie Yang also passed away two months ago, an enormous shock to the Master that might have been one of the fatal reasons. Liu Xiaoqing was the lead actress of Xie's HIBISCUS TOWN and a good friend of both the director and his son. When Xie Yang passed, Liu Xiaoqing was rehearsing the director's THE LAST NIGHT OF TAIPAN CHIN stage adaptation. Xie Yang also wanted to make this play into a CHICAGO like movie. According to Liu Xiaoqing, the Xie family was a prominent family, the "Xie" in the so-called "Wang Xie Tang Chin Yan" was Xie Jin's ancestor. Now in film history before two fifth generation directors Chen and Zhang could be considered the era of Xie Jin. Xie Jin was said not to listen to any discouragement and insisted on getting into the National Theater School Drama Department. Once removed from the family tree, later after worldwide fame was he able to return as the prodigal son. Director Xie Jin had three sons and a daughter, two sons suffered from mental deficiency, one at the age of 38-year-old year passed away. Xie Yang was the eldest son, tall and strong he was a good person. Xie Jin Yan also often praised the child as a great brother. Xie Yang in the 1980s studied in the United States. While in the United States he was working while studying and life was very tough. Xie Yang has worked tirelessly, several years later he graduated from the New York University film department and returned to the motherland. Xie Yang's first film after returning home was a Media Asia film, actresses were Zhou Xun and Gua Ah-lei (most of the newspapers did not mention Gua Ah-lei). Because it was the first film, Xie Yang's style was not considered mature and needed several days of additional shoots. At that time, 17-year-old Zhou Xun, and more than 50 Gua Ah-lei had the greatest respect and love for Xie Yang, Gua Ah-lei even told people, "Have you ever heard of poorly made film that required additional shoots?" She meant that if a movie was poor no investors would spend money on additional shoot, which sounded very reasonable. Later Gua Ah-lei with MAIDEN ROSE won the 1995 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Best Actress award. One of MAIDEN ROSE' actor was Liu Qiong, who starred in Xie Jin's WOMAN BASKETBALL PLAYER NO. 5. Two generations of directors' use of the same actor was also a much-told tale. Xie Yang's second film, MY RICE NOODLE SHOP, at the time everyone all thought getting approval of the original creator Pai Hsien-yung was very difficult, but Xie Yang took the challenge, persuaded Mr. Bai and after they have become friends . Xie Jin was a recognized master, Xie Yang inherited his director gene, the writer has never heard of any gossip about the father and the son. Any person who mentioned the two all had praise. Impermanence of things, there is regret in life ... ... - TIN LIK 7. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 26 2008 THE FINANCIAL TSUNAMI'S IMPACT ON THE ENTERTAINMENT CIRCLE After the financial tsunami's impact on the entire world, I have been observing: in the end what kind of effect would it have on show business? In the last quarter of this year, a number of media publications such as magazines, electronic media and advertising companies are developing next year's budget, the results are, to varying degrees, to face the reality of the problem: their customers and "bread and butter" -- advertisers due to direct or indirect impact of the financial tsunami suffered some significant investment losses or decreased profits due to the volume of business, thus they had to make significant adjustment or reservations in next year's budget and had difficulties in their projections. For example TVB anniversary show due to sponsorship issues had awards that "lost luster". Next year's film and television events big and small, film festivals, beauty pageants and singing contests, would have more difficulties in looking for sponsorship or advertising. This, in turn, was expected to also mean that business as a result of the emergence of financial restraint, next year's film, television and performing arts events would suffer hits; scheduled to be held next month the "Asia-Pacific Film Festival" due to lack of funds had to close down for a year. From another perspective, I felt that the current Chinese-language films operation format might be a reference for the future development of the performing arts events. In other words, the future of three lands on two shores business-sponsored funds might tend to be concentrated in certain large-scale high-quality performing arts activities in the region for tour or held by turns, such as film festivals, music and drama activities ("Encore" staged in Hong Kong and Macao would be an example), and so on, and with sponsorship or support of the host formats contributed to the three lands' entertainers and behind the scene personnel to follow film's lead for more integration and communication in other areas. Not only the gap between the three lands but also speed up the integration of activities in recent years. Under these circumstances, the entertainment industry might have another elimination round. However in this elimination round, whether or not artists themselves would have the strength and whether organizations would be wealthy and powerful, they would not be the conditions of victory. The most important thing is that whether everyone could plan ahead to cope with the challenge with multiple deployments, at the same time they also had to know how to be flexible and adapt to environmental changes. Strength would be their advantage, otherwise they would again become "bad money drives good money". Right now would be too early to tell whether they would be good or bad, but after the elimination, show business would be a different situation. - CHUI HIU [ In Production Now/Soon ] CLAUSTROPHOBIA Can : Chun Muk Lit : Intimate d.
