MISCELLANEOUS * (8/27/2008) Louis Koo Tin Lok, Barbie Shui (Tsui Hei Woon), Wong Cho Nam, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Chan Ka Lok, Terry Fan Siu Wong, and director Benny Chan Muk Sing yesterday attended their film CONNECTED (BO CHI TUNG WA) press conference and the trailer was shown. Big S expressed that in the film she played a single mother, strong individual who would fight back in the face of difficulty. Big S worked with director Chan Muk Sing and Goo Jai for the first time. She said that before working with the director she was a little worried, but actually he was very gentle. Yet each scene has been a huge challenge to her. She has seen the director's previous work and realized that his films were very creative. After working with him the director has completely explored her potential and she believed that she would not be afraid of any film from now on. Big S expressed that originally when she learned Goo Jai was the male lead she was excited, but actually they were only connected through the phone and only had one scene together. It was quite a pity. Goo Jai expressed that most of his scenes were solo scenes, but he was a little better than Big S because he performed after watching Big S' scenes. He said that driving while holding and talking on the phone was the most difficult. He said that Hong Kong now driving while on the phone was illegal so he thought about using hands free headsets, but he felt like he was crazy as if he was talking to himself. Goo Jai expressed that this was his second collaboration with Chan Muk Sing. Last time they worked on ROB B HOOD (BO BUI GAI WAT). If they had the chance he would like to work with him on another comedy. The film had many action scenes that Goo Jai honestly said was a little nervous about. Big S after the interview said that this shoot was unforgettable and fun. Physically and mentally she had tremendous breakthrough, but during the shoot she had to host a program in Taiwan so she very easily would forget either her hosting or film work and had to think about the process anew. Big S expressed that the director asked her to read the Cantonese lines but later was afraid that her Cantonese was less than fluent so finally they returned to Mandarin. She did not feel her practice time was wasted. Now her Cantonese was rather decent. Big S revealed that she would host a dance program in Taiwan and joked that if the rating was poor then she would dance. Big S honestly said that she and her sister were in a group and she loved to dance. As for film roles, she would like to work on a foreign vampire film. She wanted to play the vampire killer. Goo Jai said that he did not have time to sleep not to mention date. When he ran into a good screenplay then he would work. Now he had several films on hand. Goo Jai expressed that although he has worked with Big S, they have only seen each other several times. Yesterday felt like the production start. He joked that the sequel should be called BO CHI KUI LEI (KEEP YOUR DISTANCE). He has seen Big S's performance in SILK. Whether they would work together again they would have to ask the director. Goo Jai honestly said that with the nonstop interviews lately his Mandarin has improved a lot. Cheung Ka Fai expressed in the film he played a cop. He said that he has played cops and mobsters the most and joked that he was a little bored. He did not understand why the director would cast him in such roles. Ka Fai expressed that in recent years he has made many heavy films and thus would like a comedy. Director Chan Muk Sing expressed that this film took two years to prepare and realized that adapting a screenplay was absolutely not easy. He said that this film was the most comfortable one to make in his career because the cast was very hard working. * (8/27/2008) Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam yesterday met with her fans and celebrated her first book ZERO DISTANCE's 20,000 copies sales. Kong Yeuk Lam revealed that in early September she would work on the Pang Shun directed new film SAM GOK CHOR (TRIANGLE MISTAKE), in which she would play a leukemia patient. She has been working hard on losing weight and her goal was around 90 pounds. "I am very glad to have the chance to make this tragedy. I am afraid that I would have a hard time with leaving the role. I would cut my hair shorter for the role." * (8/27/2008) Sundream film PLASTIC CITY has qualified for the Venice Film Festivla competition. The film company designed an international poster, in which the actress was almost completely naked and covered only with tattooo. The poster would be one in a series, each design would reveal the film's story. * (8/26/2008) Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum) play mysterious in his romantic horror film. Not only the team has absolutely no idea what movie they are making, the producers even keeps the ending under lock and key until the day of the shoot. He says that he deliberately wants the audience to look forward to it and industry insiders to feel "something". One of the actors Andy On Chi Kit honestly says that he guesses while he performs. Sometimes he cannot even grasp the director's meaning, which instead is more fun. The director expresses in the interview that he deliberately creates mystery because the less the audience knows the more satisfied they feel when they watch the movie; in addition, he knows that many industry insiders would ask for the film content, even the crew has to remain confidential. "This is psychological. No one would believe everyone would know so little. I very successful make the industry insiders feel 'there is something'. This film is shot in order. Actually I had a complete screenplay, but I would distribute it everyday. I even had the ending, but it was hand written. I told the producers to lock it up until the day of the shoot." he explains, he takes this approach because the story itself is a mystery. Alice Tsang Hoi Won comes from Taiwan to Hong Kong to find her late boyfriend, then strange things happen. Viewers are like the people in the movie and have no idea what has happened. They wait for the film to resolve the mystery scene by scene. "I only ask for the actors to be themselves, they only have to be a little more real. The less everyone know the more they are able to express the film's atmosphere. On many occasions I want them to have a lost look." On Chi Kit says, the director's method is very special and challenging to him. He also likes this mystery. "Now young viewers are very smart. They want surprise and would only look forward to something when they don't know much about it. The director has used a very special way to attract viewers." As for the lack of security when he makes this movie, he says, "I have made Director To (Johnnie To Kei Fung)'s movies before, he also doesn't give screenplays. I am already used to that, script or not isn't a problem. When I first got into the business I didn't know anything. I had to be trained and learn to mature. New actors' beginning is hard but I now have already suffered! When I made this film, we often have to guess. It was even more fun. Aside from me, Chubby (Siu fei) and they often ask the same question, 'What are we doing?' Yet the director always says wait until the movie is out then they would know. We then wouldn't have any pressure because when we can't we just take another take." * (8/26/2008) CHAMPIONS (DUET BIU) actors including Dicky Cheung Wai Kin, Priscilla Wong Chui Yu, Xie Miu, Debbie Goh (Ng TIn Yu) and others two days ago attended an event in Shenzhen. When Cheung Wai Kin appeared everyone roared in cheer. Many have already been waiting the day before in hopes of getting in for a glimpse of him. "Maybe because I rarely attend public events in Guangdong, the people and 'vermicelli' response is more passionate. Originally I plan to on such a rare occasion with so many around to proper perform the film's martial art for them, but I am ill. I can only wait until after the promotion for everything to Cheung Wai Kin with a lot of martial art potential!" Debbie feels very lucky to be able to attend the Beijing Olympics wushu competition. Priscilla is very envious. "Originally I could go as well, but I suddenly got sick at the airport. The airport crew urged me to take another flight. Later, due to the hurricane I couldn't go to Beijing. I was very disappointed." * (8/26/2008) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and Alan Luo (Law Chi Cheung) yesterday attended the Emperor film SHUI YUET CHING press conference. They arrived hand in hand like a new couple. Yesterday four children were present. The host asked Ah Sa how many child she would like? She said that she did not need four, but Piggy said that he wanted more than four. Piggy expressed that in the film he would play a French cuisine chef who would have a romance with Ah Sa. The host asked whether Ah Sa's love in reality has been very smooth so she looked especially pretty. She laughed and said, "What?" Ah Sa said that in the film she would play a white collar worker, a more introverted girl. She said that she rather looked forward to her first collaboration with Piggy. She has appeared on Piggy's program and thought that he was very funny. Piggy said that he ordinarily would be very cool and was a two faced person who did not like to laugh. Piggy said that he has heard from Wu Chen that Ah Sa really took care of her co-star. Wu Chen also praised Ah Sa as a very nice person. Later the event arranged Piggy to make salad with Ah Sa as his assistant. Both even fed each other a bite even though they looked a little awkward. Ah Sa expressed that this film would shoot in Shanghai. She said that each time she saw Piggy she felt like laughing. When asked whether Piggy or Ronald Cheng Chung Kei was funnier? She said that both were. As for who was better looking she also said both. She said that for now she could not reveal if she and Piggy would have any intimate scene. Ah Sa was asked whether her relationship with Cheng Chung Kei has been publicized, she only said that she did not know how to answer and she truly did not want to talk about her personal life. She wanted to put the focus on work. She said, "I feel everything will come out in the end." Ah Sa expressed that gossips would appear each time she made a movie. She thanked rumored boyfriend Wu Chen's praises in front of Piggy. Piggy expressed that he was very excited and nervous about working with a Hong Kong director and believed that they would have spark. Piggy said that he and Wu Chen were linked in rumors, and now he would work with Wu Chen's rumored girlfriend Ah Sa. He knew that Ah Sa really took care of those around her. He said that he did not know that Ah Sa had a boyfriend and would not ask her. When asked whether he was afraid that Ah Sa would ask him about his rumors, Piggy was surprised and said that he had no girlfriend. He explained that Jolin Tsai (Choi Yi Lam) was his big sister. Although she was younger than him but she took care of the kids. They had no feeling and were good friends. They often played video games together. He expressed that because he was the only child he wanted to have more than four children. Siblings could share the load on a lot of difficulties. * (8/26/2008) Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam), Simon Yam Tat Wa, Wong Yau Nam, Lam Ka Tung, Terry Fan Siu Wong, Japanese actor Ikeuchi Hiroyuki and director Wilson Yip Wai Shun two nights ago attended the film IP MAN's wrap banquet. This film's director was Yip Wai Shun, Sammo Hung Kam Bo was the action director. Hung Doi Lam was arranged to learn to practice with the wooden man with a wing chun master, but Brother Wa joked that studying Wing Chun she could handle a boyfriend who was a great dancer. Would she invite Aaron Kwok Fu Sing to the premiere? She honestly said that if he would have time she would like him to see it. Was her first film tough? "No, I only worry about that my performance would affect others." Was Kwok Fu Sing and Yen Chi Tan more attractive? She said that Yen Chi Tan was more attractive, she has not compared them together because they were two different types. She said, "Men who knew gong fu have greater sense of security, they don't need to be too mild mannered, but gentlemen like." Yen Chi Tan expressed that his right shoulder acted up again during this shoot and needed a massage therapist to be on the set to loosen his muscles. At the time he could not even pick up his arm. He said that playing Ip Man convincingly was the hardest. He knew that Ip Man's descendants were very satisfied with earlier screening, then he was at ease. His film PAINTED SKIN (WAT PEI) has become involved in a lawsuit. He believed that the issue would not be too big and should be an administrative issue. * (8/25/2008) Director Johnnie To Kei Fung two nights ago appeared with his wife at the airport in preparation to be on the jury of the Venice Film Festival. However they would visit Paris first and discussed the October artistic collaboration with the national theater. After Venice they would head to the Toronto Film Festival. As for the jury standard, Ah To joked, "I have already prepared my eyes and ears to watch movies, hopefully I won't fall asleep. (Would you give the only Hong Kong film in competition high mark?) Now I can't either I would give high or low mark because I haven't seen it yet. I only want to watch entertaining movies. Movies ultimately have different favorites, Hong Kong films would be easier to understand. (What are you looking forward to the most?) Japanese animated films." Ah To also did not eliminate the possibility of discussing other film collaboration projects on this trip, but the one with Alain Delon may have to wait because now he has several different projects in progress. Ah To expressed that Hong Kong has movies to make and bosses who are willing to pay to make them, only no one is making them. Thus he felt the Hong Kong film industry needed to change and the industry is already training new comers. * (8/25/2008) Janice Man Wing San yesterday attended a children event. Next month she would return to film, including Pang Shun's new film. The film was originally titled GEI BOON OI (BASIC LOVE) but now changed the title to SAM GOK CHOR (TRIANGLE MISTAKE). Earlier she provided her voice to the film 10 PROMISES WITH MY DOG. In this new film, Janice would sell fish. The other two leads would be Square's Rex and Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam who would play a seriously ill patient. For realism she would learn to gut a fish, which would be a huge challenge to her. "I haven't even touched any dead fish yet so it would be rather awkward. For realism, I have to learn. Luckily the director gave me gloves to catch and gut fishes with. That should be better than doing it bare handed." She also said that she has been studying similar films in preparation, including Miriam Yeung Chin Wa's HOOKED ON YOU (MUI DONG BIN WAN SI). The difference between the characters was hers had a father who picked gambling over family and she had to make a living at the fish stall with her mother. Thus for the role she would change her image with a wig and light make up. She honestly said that at first she suspected whether she would be able to get used to such a drastic change, but with the director's encouragement and the company's support she would motivate herself with the pressure. * (8/25/2008) In the Jingle Ma Chor Sing directed new film BUTTERFLY LOVERS (MO HUP LEUNG JOOK) injected action elements into the classic romantic story. Aside from master action director Ching Siu Tung, the film also invited action star Xiong Xin Xin to play a martial art school elder. Although Xiong Xin Xin has already made a name for himself with his action, the fights were left for Wu Chen. He was instead responsible for comedy, which left the crew with nothing but praise on the set. In one scene he has to test Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin's gong fu level. The director for comedy effect wanted Ah Sa to hit the bridge of Xiong Xin Xin's nose with a hammer and make him bleed nonstop. Yet the prop blood could not flow out successfully and led to bad takes. When he bled, the crew laughed for another bad take. Finally the director had to issue a "laughter ban" for the shoot to be successful. Xiong Xin Xin felt that this role was a huge breakthrough and change from his past characters, thus to him it was a challenge. * (8/25/2008) CONNECTED yesterday held a trailer premiere. Actors Louis Koo Tin Lok, Barbie Shui (Tsui Hei Woon), Nick Cheung Ka Fai, and Chan Ka Lok promoted in person. The men gave presents to Big S. Goo Jai gave his new book TOY WAR, Cheung Ka Fai gave baby products for Big S' sister and Chan Ka Lok gave moon cakes. Goo Jai and Big S so far has only met once, thus yesterday they appeared rather unfamiliar. Goo Jai expressed, "Big S made all of it first, then I watched how she performed and coordinated." Goo Jai in the film had a car chase while on the phone, did he use a double? He said, "No, I only used a double for the jumps. I didn't feel endangered. The photographer was scared witless in the car and said I was driving too fast. The film company bouth several hundred thousands in insurance. I have always had policies so I didn't need to increase them." Goo Jai has not driven in eight years. One day he woke up and did not want to drive anymore. Did he want to drive again after the movie? "I have trauma, a stunt person was injured. The arm injury saw bone." Goo Jai honestly said that he has driven fast before but luckily he never had any accident. "Back then I went from Shaw's to Ho Man Tin in seven minutes, that was ten years ago." Big S and Goo Jai only spent one day together during the shoot. She said that Goo Jai was the most unfamiliar co-star and the feeling was strange. Little S just had a second baby, Big S expressed, "I am very happy. I am always taking care of the children and become the super nanny. I don't want any. I was by my sisters' sides when they had theirs. I have seen natural birth and otherwise three times already. They were terrifying! I am not afraid of blood, I went because I was worried about their safety." Big S earlier with Joseph Chang (Cheung Hau Cheun) made the film OI DIK FAT SING LIN JAP (LOVE'S ENUNCIATION PRACTICE) had a 7 to 8 minute bathroom love scene that finally was cut. Big S expressed that it was her most daring performance and she felt very disappointed that it was cut. The scene left her legs with bruises all over. Chan Ka Lok in the film played Big S' brother. He joked that when he first met Big S he was so nervous he was blushing. Big S joked, "His face was red only because someone just hit him. In the film I had several scenes that I had to hit him in!" Cheung Ka Fai said about Big S' statement that the shoot was especially stressful, "When an actor works in another place, the performance wouldn't be as good. Back then when I went to work on Mainland series I was rumored to be depressed. My depression has already been resolved. At the time I was somewhere else so I was affected. Big S' situation should be better than mine." Recently a report claimed that while making JING YUN (WITNESS) Ka Fai had girls all over the set. Ka Fai clarified that the girls were two very smart and cute twin girls on the set. As for his wife Esther Kwan Wing Ho, he said, "That morning she told me to read the news myself. She wouldn't suspect me, only I suspect her. She told me to read it with a smile. The worst part was it sounded like I went to the night club. The old lady absolutely trusts me. I always want to be but I don't dare. I am afraid to die, I won't for a moment of pleasure destroy my family or hurt my family. The price isn't worth it." Shu Qi has said that although she was not dating she would project her feeling on the male lead in each film. Ka Fai expressed that actors could make such an emotional release. * (8/25/2008) Taiwan group Lollipop's Owodog two nights ago prepared to return to Taiwan with his manager. Owodog honestly said that on this trip he met with Paco Wong and others to discuss film work. Owodog expressed that he still has not decided whether he would work on the film or not. However he rather admire Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Jason Wu Jing. He was also interested in martial art and action films. With his dance background he would practice martial art moves more. He expressed that the other three members were acting on their own but when they sang they definitely would be together. * (8/24/2008) Martial art fan Tsui Siu Ming along with CHAMPIONS (DUET BIU) producer Li Fung Ming and actors Debbie Goh (Ng Tin Yu), Xie Miu attended the Beijing Olympics wushu competition. Brother Siu Ming said, "While the Chinese people look forward to the Olympic flame to ignite in China, conceivably martial art lovers also look forward to this national cultural heritage radiating on the international stage. Reportedly the wushu competition is in the process of becoming a part of the usual Olympic competition. Hopefully all goes well." Brother Siu Ming came to enjoy the wushu competition in hopes of supporting the sport but also to see whether he could find some athletes with potential. "Because they have been through long period of training, physically they are great. Their image is also rather healthy. This year the media have praised many national team athletes for their star potential. Thus if I can find athletes with potential at the wushu competition they may become Jackie Chan and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit)'s successors in the Chinese film industry. Xie Miu and Ng Tin Yu were obviously excited about going to the Olympic event. To Xie Miu who has been training at the Shaolin Temple since childhood it has even deeper meaning. * (8/23/2008) The Yip Lim Sum directed FORGIVE AND FORGET (CHUN OI DIK) two nights ago held its premiere. Actors Alice Tsang Hoi Won, Andy On Chi Kit, Miki Yeung Oi Kun, Chubby (Siu fei) and HotCha attended. Many industry insiders came in support, like Jason Wu Jing, Ng Tung, Tong Bui Si. Rumor couples On Chi Kit and Rosanne, Race and Philip Ng Won Lung arrived and immediately became the focus. The parties were very gracious and responded to the press' photo requests. On Chi Kit expressed that he has invited many friends including Rosanne. Was he especially happy about Rosanne's attendance? On Chi Kit said without hesitation, "Right, earlier she has never come to see my other movies' premieres. Now step by step we are publicizing that we are good friends." 2R admitted that On Chi Kit invited them because they were good friends. Rosanne was asked whether she would sit next to On Chi Kit because it was a horror romance, she stated that she would not because he would sit next to the female leads. She also said that in the past the guys were more afraid than she was. Miki two nights ago appeared in a low cut dress. She said that perhaps she was thinner lately the dress was too loose. She joked that she was afraid if she kept getting thinner she would have no chest. Was she confident about this film's box office in comparison to Stephy Tang Lai Yun's LA LINGERIE (NOI YI SIU NUI)? She expressed that she was not worried about the box office and believed that this film would be timely due to the ghost festival. * (8/23/2008) Nick Cheung Ka Fai in the film CONNECTED (BO CHI TUNG WA) had an exciting gun fight in a mansion with Bui On Kei. It was her first gun play scene so she was very nervous. When she fired her first shot she was very frightened. Luckily Ka Fai had certain experience and advised her from the side. Ankie was able to very quickly calm down. In the story Ka Fai sneaks into the house to investigate Ankie's true identity. After she discovers him they begin the battle. They roll from the ground to the sofa, then rush through the glass door and shattering it. Ka Fai's arms are left with many scars. In one scene they stare at each other with weapons in hand but they accidentally butt heads. They cover their foreheads and scream in pain. The crew is stunned and only the director knows to call for a stop. Ankie expresses that this Hong Kong film has been quite a challenge. Luckily Ka Fai serves as her instructor. Ankie honestly says that she is very afraid when she first fires the gun. After Ka Fai advises from the sideline she very quickly overcomes the fear and can make a cool pose to fire the first shot in front of the camera. In another scene Ankie dives into the swimming pool and points a gun at Ka Fai. On the day of the shoot the temperature is only ten degrees. She also has to make cool poses in the center of the swimming pool. After each shot the crew would immediately bring hot water for her to warm up. Finally she succumbs to illness. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 26 2008, FILM WORDS ROMANTIC TRAGEDY CLASSIC DOUBLE SUICIDE 1960S JAPANESE NEW WAVE CINEMA will take place in September as the latest installment of the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department's REPERTORY CINEMA 2008. It has selected 20 some antique yet innovative Japanese films of the 50s and 60s. I recommend the Masahiro Shinoda directed black and white costume film DOUBLE SUICIDE. In Japanese some of the title, Shinju, means suicide for love. DOUBLE SUICIDE originally was a famous Edo period puppet show about a courtesan and a young paper merchant's hot romance. Yet without any way to be together they decided to commit suicide. This type of Eastern specialty folk romantic myth was the expertise of the Japanese elder film master Kenji Mizoguchi. many traditional Chinese operas have similar subjects. Yet Masahiro Shinoda gave a new interpretation to a classic show, the style of which was very unique. The opening was backstage of a modern theater rehearsal of this puppet show. The film was live action but the set was half fictional half real. It kept having masked ninjas like "puppeteers", appearing and disappearing like Death in control of the leads' fate. Toichiro Narushima's cinematography, Kiyoshi Awazu's production design, Toru Takemitsu's music were all very outstanding and made this film a mix of the cutting edge and the classic, an excellence work of the film feel and the stage feel's merger. This film has already left me with a deep impression long ago. A viewing recently remains exciting. With more experience of watching new and old stages, the writer felt Masahiro Shinoda was even more invaluable. Several years earlier Takeshi Kitano's film DOLLS was also a new style with an old puppet show, but no comparison for DOUBLE SUICIDE. Old show "repeats" were numerous, extremely few like this film were able to innovate and break through while able to make the old story intimate and moving. Actors all performed well. Shima Iwashita was the best with both roles of the wife and the courtesan as she developed an intricate relationship of two romantic rivals who sympathize and appreciate each other and created drama that was full of the power to move. Among the husband and wife team of Masahiro Shinoda and Shima Iwashita's films, I have seen HIMIKO and MELODY IN GRAY, as well as the 80s Masahiro Shinoda film MACARTHUR'S CHILDREN. In 2003 he at the age of 72 after making SPY SORGE announced his retirement. Now he and Shima Iwashita remain the model couple. Back then among the Japanese new wave directors, the first to garner international fame was Hiroshi Teshigahara's WOMAN IN THE DUNES, then Shohei Imamura and Nagisa Oshima also became renowned overseas. Masahiro Shinoda was one of the key figures (Shuji Terayama once was his screen writers), but Hong Kong seemed to have never released his films except at film festivals. DOUBLE SUICIDE had a style of its own, its creativity and visual were extraordinary and worthy of local stage scene's attention. - SHU KEI 2. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 24 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS STARS ARE MADE Where do stars come from? If someone is asked this question, the simplest answer would be stars are made. At least today that is true. Stars have always been in the making, why would some succeed and others fail? The successful ones are due to the uniquely sharp eyes of star makers, who feel that they have potential and only lack opportunity. Thus they would provide one after another chance. During the big studio days, film bosses indeed made stars that way. Another example of star making is the powerful or the rich, who does not look at whether someone has star potential; due to personal preference the stars are made. In this circle, something like this often happens -- when someone rich wants to make a girlfriend / son / daughter into a star he is willing to put up money for people to make movies. Also some down on their luck artists somehow meet someone who perhaps can support movies with them in the leads. Some television station executives take special care of several artists and keep giving them performance opportunities. Their exposure rate has already become disproportional to their talent performance. Even more examples exist. Thus, on screen people who join this circle no longer want to be artists. In one step they leap to a level where their performance is not in position yet but their personal behavior has already become star like. Last generation would say how they have toiled as they built their image through hardship. The new generation's image is from certain image designers, who study foreign stars, do not mind being accused of copying but repeatedly claim to be tailoring for stars. Those on television already have star image before viewers can remember their names. Performance talent instead is learned on the job. When viewers see their immature performance that should keep them in training classes, they are already used to it. Then, when stars run into career lows they then say they are studying acting abroad. Viewers perhaps should respond with surprise, "Now you are studying? Shouldn't you have learned a long time ago?" - KWOK HIN CHING 3. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 24 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH JAPANESE ENTERPRISE EXPLORES THE ASIAN FILM MARKET IN ALL DIRECTIONS The largest Chinese film investment in history RED CLIFF (CHET BIK) finally broke the 300 million mark at the Mainland box office and became the highest grossing film. If the next installment would also make 300 million, RED CLIFF's Chinese box office return should be near 200 million (around 40% of total return after all of the distribution expense). This film's investment was around 600 million, thus after Mainland return it still would need 400 million to break even. The key of course would be the U.S. market. This film's investment has come from different areas, one of which is the Avex group, which invested over US$30 million. Avex is a Japanese company that in recent years have been very active in Mainland and Hong Kong. Its big moves have been unrivaled. Avex around two years ago invested in Mainland's Orange Sky group and started its "journey of China" as it stepped foot into the Mainland entertainment business. In Mainland it is rather well known. Avex is a Japanese record company. Established in 1988, it is one of the world's biggest independent record company and does not belong to big groups like Warner, Sony, EMI and Universal (all four recently left IFPI in Hong Kong, another major entertainment news). Avex over 20 years have rises and falls in its business but it still is an important entertainment group in Japan. Famous artists include Ayumi Hamasaki and Namie Amuro are under contract. Avex not only invested in RED CLIFF but also occupied a seat in the Orange Sky partner Golden Harvest Group's board. The group in the recent half a year has made a big move again. In March Avex and Kong Chi Keung formed a new director film fund that specializes in discovering and cultivating new directors. Reportedly one of the new directors is Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun). Last year he made THE SECRET (BUT NUNG SHUET DIK BEI MUK) for the fund. Avex's collaboration with Kong obviously in order to build a visual content platform with Asia and local partners and to learn business management from Kong Chi Keung. After half a year, Avex again announced a film fund with Hong Kong Media Asia film company. This fund was higher than the one with Kong Chi Keung (the new director fund was US$16 million), US$50 million. In the press release, Avex pointed out that it wants to create all Asia hit visual content for consumers. Its primary market is Asia, including China. While introducing Media Asia Avex referred to the company's many box office hits and as one of the most influential film companies. Of course INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH) and THE DEPARTED were mentioned. Reportedly Avex was INITIAL D (TAU MAN JI D)'s Japanese distributor. The two companies' relationship was more than casual. Few Hong Kong film commercial film professionals and films garner glory overseas. John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) is the most successful director. Kong Chi Keung is the CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON (NGOR FU CHONG LUNG) producer, Media Asia produced INFERNAL AFFAIRS, Golden Harvest had a glorious past. Avex have indirect collaboration with all of them. Would this be a viable direction? The work will have to speak for that and time will tell. - TIN LIK 4. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 22 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS HOW TO RESTRUCTURE HONG KONG FILM SOUTHEAST ASIAN MARKET Days ago the writer has discussed that Hong Kong film should restructure the traditional market of Taiwan again. Coincidentally, the film development council has a Hong Kong film new era promotional event that hopes to restructure the Southeast Asian market. One of the promotional area is Taiwan. Other than Taiwan the areas also include Singapore, Malaysia and Mainland China. Outside Mainland, Hong Kong film in the Southeast Asian market in recent years has not have any active promotion. Small to mid scale films are done after the sale. In Taiwan for example, many small to mid scale films do not even have the chance to be released. Only their television and video rights are sold. Because very few viewer support, cinema release at least would require promotion and copy cost. The money would be lost if done poorly. No one in the world would do business that guarantees loss. The more the market shrinks, the less the promotion; the less the promotion, the more the market shrinks. This is a vicious cycle. Aside from big films, even small to mid scale film stars and directors would not promote there. The originally weak Hong Kong film naturally gets weaker. The situations in Singapore and Malaysia are similar, the overseas sale price continues to decline. Everyone konws market restructuring should be done, but how to do it? First is films that the market needs. Why would the Southeast Asian market still watch Hong Kong film? What Hong Kong film would have even greater market space than now? Whether products brings market or market naturally brings products, this is a question of the chikcen and the egg. The writer only knows that with market, Hong Kong film is not the only product. Whether we have enough competitiveness it is a question. Hong Kong film has to plan to restructure the Southeast Asian market. Who would pay for the long term promotion? Now few film companies are investing in Hong Kong film, especially productions with Hong Kong film specialty. China and Hong Kong co-productions with less Hong Kong film flavor instead occupy the majority. without certain film quantity to change the market, would local buyers be willing to take the risk and praise Hong Kong film out of their own pockets? Should the answer be found out first before promoting? - KWOK HIN CHING 5. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 21 2008, FILM WORDS COLORFUL CYBORG SHE Korean director Kwak Jae-Yong's romantic comedy MY SASSY GIRL 7 years ago was wildly popular in East Asia and even is being remade in the U.S. His new film cooks up a robotic girlfriend as his entry to Japan. It maintains the sassy girl's wonderful fun, the scale is much bigger and becomes a science fiction romance that is beyond space and time. CYBORG SHE completely stars Japanese stars. Quite an elite package, the male and female leads are young and pretty. The mystery has laughter and fears. With advanced technology, it is rather colorful. Only this film gets more and more complicated and drags on longer and longer. It is not as intimate and intense as the pure comedy MY SASSY GIRL. Yet it still has many good parts. Kwak Jae-Yong is still at ease with a Japanese film and shows his nationality cross over talent. Keisuke Koide plays a "Train Man" style introvert university student. While spending his birthday alone he runs into the angel like mystery beauty Haruka Ayase and has an innocent night of fun. The official story takes place a year later at the reunion. Actually the female lead is a future cyborg who has come to change the male lead's early life. Kwak Jae-Yong's cyborg girlfriend obviously is under the influence of James Cameron's U.S. hit film series THE TERMINATOR, changes the cyborg into an often rule breaking robot beauty and turns it into a love story. Wonderfully this romance also resembles the modern version of a mortal and immortal romance. Keisuke Koide is the ordinary and straight laced mortal while Haruka Ayase is more wonderful and alive than the fairy. She often flies to prevent disasters and rescue people like Superman. In the film Haruka Ayase is the most outstanding, beautiful yet cute, super yet innocent. She on the streets, in the restaurants, on the stage, in theaters, university ground and department store all have unexpected fun. She stealthily rescues the suffering and the troubled, truly like a comic book heroine unleashed. At night she is quiet -- like THE TERMINATOR's Arnold Schwarzenegger she faced the window with her eyes open and stand silently. She does not need sleep and has no sexual desire. Keisuke Koide is lovably silly, but is more passive and fragile than the female lead. Kwak Jae-Yong has always been better in describing female than male. In addition he focuses on nostalgia. The childhood memory flashback with a return to the hometown in the middle is also very touching. This film is sad and sympathetic too, capturing all the disasters today around the world that needs superman's rescue. The climax is a big earthquake. The special effect is rather strong, leading to life and death. The latter part also changes very mysteriously but drags on too long and is a bit excessive. Actually it should be intensified, but Kwak Jae-Yong just keeps on adding material that he is unwilling to cut. The film cannot be one straight shot like MY SASSY GIRL. - SHEK KEI 6. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 21 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS HONG KONG CINEMAS SHOULD SPEED UP DIGITALIZATION The time has come to bid farewell to film. Many filmmakers are still loyal film fans who feel the visual cannot be replaced. Today, how many professional still photographers still insist on using film? They all have entered the digital world, use extremely high resolution digital cameras. They press the button and the image is immediately sent to the computer screen without any need for development. Movie still uses film, aside from film professionals' certain stubbornness, because film quality digital video is not cheaper than film. The coordination like editing, special effects and cinema projection are also incomplete. Professional digital video camera rental is similar to filmmaking film camera rental. Another consideration is movie's professional photographers may not be as familiar with the new digital video camera than the film camera. Although editing uses the computer, different digital video camera has different storage format with its own equipment. Hollywood film is already used to computer color adjustment for the entire film then transfer to film. Digital video reduces the film transfer step and avoids loss of realism. Most money is saved from copy printing. Now each cinema has one to two film copy. If digital is used, it only needs one hard drive that can be used again and again. When digital cinemas go online in the future, film companies can transmit video through fiber optics to each cinema. They do not even need hard drives, environmentally safe and is worthy of promoting. A 90 minute long copy costs over 10,000. How many copies are needed in so many cinemas after the entire world and how cost they cost? Those copies are reels after reels of very heavy film. After several weeks in release they are almost completely scratched up and would rarely be used again. Film companies would only keep a small amount, which actually is not very environmentally safe. Cinemas need to speed up digitalization, but the cost is not cheap at all. The slow progress now because cinema owners are investing and film companies are saving money. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Sing Mung Kei Yuen Lit : Star Dream Fantasy Destiny d. Wilson Yip Wai Shun Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Simon Yam Tat Wa, Lynn Hung [ CINEMA ONLINE MALAYSIA ] Adapted from the life story of Ip Man - the grand master of the Wing Chun style of kung fu and sifu of legendary kung fu superstar Bruce Lee. This movie will be the first important record of the master's life. Ip's persistent devotion to Wing Chun is a classic example of the love and respect shown to wushu and the freedom and spirit it represents. Ip Man is a concept, a spirit, a way of thinking - and it exemplifies a new peak in Hong Kong's wushu movies. RED CLIFF PART II AKA : BATTLE OF RED CLIFF Can : Chet Bik Lit : Red Cliff d. SPIRIT OF THE GAME Congratulations to the U.S. Men's Basketball Team for barely winning the Gold Medal. There is nothing like trying to stay up all night and watching a team of supposedly the best players the country has to offer almost throwing away the game. We don't need the Redeem team; we need the Cream the world team. Sure, that is not the spirit of the game, but has this game really be about the spirit? From the daily persecution of the protestors being overlooked to the wonderful "horse making", uh, officiating that has taken place in various events, perhaps athletes like Ara Abrahamian and Angel Matos were right. All the Olympic committee has taught China is might (money) makes right (Please refer to the Berlin Games). (http://www.theonion.com/content/infograph/chinese_doctoring_public) Meanwhile, we are still looking for ChiPpy and we are fearing the worst, especially after Juno sent this depiction of how the Beijing Olympic symbol came about months ago. If we see ChiPpy in the Bodies exhibit we know for sure -- who says China isn't "green"? (http://www.collthings.co.uk/2008/05/2008-beijing-olympic-symbol-origins.html) While the swim kids worship Michael Phelps, the gymnastic kids worship Shawn Johnson and the bball kids worship Yao Ming, Your Chaffing Editor's Olympic hero (aside from the two aforementioned "sportsmen") is Liu Xiang. Unlike a certain seven foot tall Rocket, he had the guts to know that he could not perform at his peak (if at all) and made the smarter choice of pulling out despite the hometown pressure et al.
