MISCELLANEOUS * (8/6/2008) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Barbie Shui (Tsui Hei Woon) starred CONNECTED (BO CHI TUNG WA) will open on the National Day slot. In one scene Liu Ye chases Goo Jai during the 1 degree Celsius winter on the hill. Goo Jai had to run from the peak to the foot of the hill under the chilly wind. He was so cold that he could not even speak clearly. Finally he had to use a giant model plane to knock Liu Ye over. During his escape the vehicle that he was driving fell into the cliff. Goo Jai said, the cliff scene was very dangerous because the abyss was nearly 30 meter deep. After the shoot the vehicle could not be removed. They took a week to be able to dissemble the car and retrieve it in parts. * (8/6/2008) The Andrew Lau Wai Keung directed Media Asia film LOOK FOR A STAR (SING MUNG) earlier shot its final scene in Macau. The team shot at a street eatery and attracted over 100 onlookers. Even a dog accidentally got into a scene and the director had quite a headache. Finally he had to clear the set several times before completing the shoot and everyone celebrated with champagne happily. In this scene Wa Jai proposed to Shu Qi with a ring. Due to its value, special personnel was assigned to protect it. Shu Qi was drooling all over the ring. "Wow, hurry and let me wear it. I won't return it! After I put it on it's me, haha." Wa Jai saw how large Shu Qi's ring was and how his was not as shiny. He immediately grabbed Shu Qi's ring and forced it onto his finger. The director could not help but tell them not to fool around anymore. If they lost the ring their salary would be paid to the sponsor. Shu Qi immediately stopped and said to Wa Jai, "Your salary is more expensive than the ring, you play with it! You can afford to lose it, I can't." Wa Jai claimed that Shu Qi could more than absolutely afford it and told her not to be so humble. He even pointed out that the ring was made for a woman and not a man and forced her to take it back. Denise Ho Wan Si was in Macau for the film's press conference, then took her parents to spend the day in Macau. At late night she came to celebrate with the team and even brought her parents to visit Best Actor Lau Tak Wa. Wa Jai in front of Ah Si's parents praised her as a nice girl and a good actress, which made them very happy. * (8/5/2008) Paco Wong and Cheng Tung Hong's Gold Label announced a nine figure purchase of EMI's Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan branches for a merger to become Gold Label Big Wind. Paco Wong yesterday expressed in a radio interview that not only will the company continue to develop its music business but also make movies. This year it has already released four of its five films, with the last one still in preparation. * (8/5/2008) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and Wu Chen along with director Jingle Ma Chor Sing and Tony Wong Yuk Long yesterday went to the Convention Center to attend the Hong Kong animation and comic book festival to promote their new film BUTTERFLY LOVERS (MO HUP LEUNG JOOK). Wu Chen in the film had to help Ah Sa with her male disguise. Wu Chen stressed that the person was the director. Ah Sa expressed that the director cleared the set so she could work at ease and the scene only showed silhouette. Ah Sa revealed that the most unforgettable part of the shoot was Wu Chen massaged her feet. When Wu Chen took off her shoes and rubbed her feet, she screamed inside. * (8/5/2008) The Simon Yam Tat Wa produced, Mainland director Liu Fendou directed film OCEAN FLAME after qualifying for the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard segment in May earlier received news that it has also qualified for the 33th Annual Toronto International Film Festival in September. The film was about an innocent girl and a swindling Wise Guy's love story. The story involved violence and sex scenes. First time producer Yam Tat Wa said, "This time the film subject was more daring. Earlier when it premiered at Cannes, many scenes left an impression with the audience. Of course I am happy about the Toronto Film Festival invitation because it is one of the largest North American film festival." Due to work, Yam Tat Wa probably would not be able to attend in person. Monica Wang (Mok Siu Kei) was exceptionally excited. "This film was the most difficult in my career. Many scenes were for real and the film took nearly half a year to shoot. Thus I am very happy about the good performance." * (8/4/2008) The film LA LINGERIE (NOI YI SIU NUI)'s cast members Stephy Tang Lai Yun, Tong Yi, Janice Man Wing San, JJ Jia (Ga Hiu Sun and Wong Yau Nam yesterday attended a lingerie fashion show. The event also arranged for Yau Nam to present lingerie to the actresses. Tang Lai Yun was rumored to be at odds with Janice during the shoot. Yesterday they denied the rumor and said that they enjoyed fries during the shoot. Stephy even worried that Janice would have acne. Janice yesterday went off stage to distribution movie ticket coupons to fans and was rather popular. Later Stephy also gave tickets to her fans. JJ expressed that in the film she had a bed scene with Andy On Chi Kit, her first one in Hong Kong. She expressed that the shoot took the entire night. Because they were not familiar it was very awkward. She said that the director saw how unnatural they were and personally demonstrated with a pillow. Tong Yi expressed that in the film she had the most scene with Yau Nam. Because they were not too familiar, one staring scene took them several takes. * (8/1/2008) The Andrew Lau Wai Keung directed new film SING MUNG KEI YUEN (STAR DREAM FANTASTIC FATE) cost over 54 million. Boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok and director Lau Wai Keung yesterday led the cast members Andy Lau Tak Wa, Shu Qi, Denise Ho Wan Si and Zhang Han (Cheung Hom) attended a press conference. Wa Jai and Shu Qi this time would play a couple. Wa Jai's character would be a handsome and rich nice guy, Shu Qi joked, "I am afraid that I may truly fall for him." Wa Jai and Shu Qi this time would develop a love story in which Wa Jai would play an eligible bachelor. On stage Wa Jai joked that he would ask boss Lam Kin Ngok for advice on how to chase girls and be rich. This time two Best Actors would gather. Aside from Wa Jai, Zhang Han is also a Mainland Best Actor. Zhang Han yesterday even publicly challenged Wa Jai and jokingly claimed that he could hold his own. In the film Ho Wan Si would play a pair with Zhang Han. Shu Qi in the film would play a casino dealer who dreams of dance in the U.S. She joked that now she had to go on a diet because she would have to wear a lot of tight dance costumes. She said that this production has been very enjoyable because she, Ella Koon Yun Na, Elle (Siu Shuet), Kau Fei Ying and Pu Pu got along very well and often were so noisy that even the director would scream to shut the five "bitches" up. This time she would develop a romance with rich guy Wa Jai. Shu Qu honestly said that she knew a lot of rich people but rich and handsome were harder. Wa Jai in the film would be a 1000% good men so not liking him would be hard. Shu Qi also said that in one scene Wa Jai was also her human shoe horn. If in real life a guy was so attentive to her she definitely would throw herself at him. Shu Qi said that she was afraid of truly falling for Wa Jai this time and could only fight for more time to be together. Wa Jai said that Shu Qi's fear of falling for him and joked that Shu Qi has truly fallen for him. Wa Jai laughed, "I like her too! We would have a future, tell her to relax." When asked whether he was afraid that he would get into trouble for what he said, Wa Jai laughed and said that he would not. Earlier reportedly he was accused of being very opinionated on the set and taught Lam Ka Wa to act. He pointed out that everyone had no problem with the collaboration and studied the screenplay together. It has been very pleasant, he also taugh Lam Ka Wa how to respond to reporters. In addition, Ho Wan Si this time would play a strong business woman and Wa Jai's assistant. He pointed out that this character would be very funny. Often made fun of for being flat, she planned to use more pad. Although the load was heavier her back was not aching yet. * (8/1/2008) The Stanley Kwan Kam Peng directed Sichuan charity short film 1/2008 earlier held a charity premiere in Shanghai. The actors Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Xu Jiao, and Bowie Lam Bo Yi, Lu Chuan, Zhang Yibai, Gu Changwei, Wang Guangli attended. Kwan Kam Peng's short film was the finale and the reaction was great. Some in the media praised Sing Sing's grasp of emotional release in the film was great. Director Kwan pointed out that this time was full of Chinese people's mutual love spirit. Sing Sing at the event was asked how being a father felt like. Sing Sing said that he was not married or a father, and that he was single, which cracked up the entire venue. Xu Jiao was asked whether Kwok Fu Sing or Stephen Chow Sing Chi was a more handsome father? Xu Jiao was stunned and did not know how to respond. Sing Sing threatened her and told her to be careful to answer this question and Xu Jiao was completely off guard. Finally Sing Sing told everyone not to scare her because the answer was very hard. Everyone was handsome. Sing Sing after the premiere would have to continue the rehearsal for his world tour's first stop in Macau. With only one day before the performance he had to intensify the rehearsal. * (7/31/2008) The Sundream Picture release, Jia Zhangke and Tsui Siu Ming produced film PLASTIC CITY has been selected to compete in the 65th Annual Venice International Film Festival's Gold Lion prize. Yesterday the producers led leads Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Huang Yi in a press conference. Although this film had a chance to compete for the big prize, Chau Sun had a lot of complaint about shooting in Brazil. The film locations were all very dirty places. They also had to go to the rain forest so everyone was drenched and had bug bites all over. He said, "I am truly lucky to be alive." However, after over two months there Chau Sun was not slimmer because the local food was rather fattening. He also said, local women were very fat but very brave to dress very provocatively. He said, "Brazil was rumored to have a lot of pretty girls. I believe it's only in a certain area and not as amazing as they say." Chau Sun in the film had to learn to speak Portuguese and had a lot of difficult Portuguese lines. Even his tutor told him that local Chinese would not know how to speak such Portuguese. Chau Sun said, this film also had Japanese star Joe Odagiri, Huang Yi spoke Mandarin, the make up artist spoke French, everyone's on the set communication was very chaotic and he almost had a personality split. Chau Sun expressed that the environment was rather poor and the shoot used the Hollywood standard. Everyday electricity was cut and they had to face reality. Chau Sun expressed that Brazil was very big. This time they went to Sao Paolo. Even though it was a commercial area it had trash all over. People slept all over the streets. The wealth gap was rather severe and anyone could carry a gun. Chau Sun two nights ago attended THE MUMMY TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR premiere and praised Isabella Leong Lok Si's performance. "Her English has improved a lot, which proved that she has studied. She is so young and has such a good memory, she definitely has improved." Has Isabella's acting improved? Chau Sun said that previously he has only seen her in ISABELLA so comparison would be difficult. However as long as she was willing to learn she definitely would improve. He also said that Isabella would call him occasionally and chat. Huang Yi also pointed out that Brazil was very disorderly and she normally did not dare to go out. Siu Tin's driver was robbed at gunpoint on the street. In one scene she had to slap Siu Tin and took four or five takes. Siu Tin told her not to hold back. Because earlier during a fight scene the actors used real wood to hit him, a few slaps would not be any problem. She also said that she thought Siu Tin would act like a big shot because at first when they dined together he did not speak. Later she learned that he was too nervous. She also said that in the film her costumes were rather sexy. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 4 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS NO MATTER FOREIGN OR HONG KONG, ONLY SUPPORT GOOD FILMS Hong Kong film has been weak. Some industry insiders feel that they should urge viewers to support Hong Kong film. The writer feels that is unnecessary. Most importantly cinemas have to give Hong Kong films a fair chance and not lean screen numbers toward foreign films. Fairness is already enough. Viewers should support good films, whether they are Hong Kong films or foreign films. To the average viewers watching a movie is a search for entertainment. If the movie can satisfy viewers in this area, then it is a good movie. The more demanding viewers perhaps would want a little more of a message outside entertainment. If a movie has it then it is fine, if it does not no one can say it is bad. Film is a commercial product, viewers are consumers and naturally have the freedom to choose. In the past slogans like "love the ancestral nation, use national product" have appeared, how effective they were everyone should know. Hong Kong film for awhile has disappointed viewers. Soon that became a bias, almost discrimination. In recent years survival of the fittest situation has already appeared in Hong Kong film. Swindling has already been reduced, but that still could not change most viewers' minds. In the overseas market, Hong Kong film reputation instead is better because the bias does not exist. Film professionals are not worried about viewer bias but value cinema opinions the most. If a movie does not have favorable start and lacks screen and showing numbers, it would have difficulty with good box office. Without good box office, naturally the film remains in a disadvantage for the long term. Indeed bias in this aspect exists. Foreign film release screen and showing numbers are often more than Hong Kong films'. Even if their box office was poor, they still would get a better treatment. The writer feels that Hong Kong people do not need to give special treatment to Hong Kong film, just a little fairer. It would be the best if viewers do not have any bias, no matter Hong Kong film or Hollywood film, Japanese film or Korean film, Filipino film, Thai film, they are all treated the same way. Only the entertaining ones are supported. This is the healthiest. No bias is good. - KWOK HIN CHING 2. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 3 2008 ABOUT WOO (3) Do not think that in Hollywood you can call all the shots. As a director, filmmaking in Hong Kong may have far more freedom than in Hollywood -- here the meaning of "freedom" contains a little hint of being spoiled, especially for some people who lack order, preparation and follow the so-called "live inspiration", everything is based on "standard". Film is both (art) creation and an industry. The former focuses on personal demonstration and personal vision expression; the latter stresses detailed delegation, intricate organization and each department's strict coordination. Hollywood films face the entire world's audience so the former must yield to the latter and look for the lowest common denominator so most of the audience can understand and enjoy the same kind of fun. The so-called "understand" is a way of storytelling that tends to be simplified: cause and effect, good and evil, their set up to develop opposition and resolution all need to be clear in the path and hints (thus the slightly "brave" step into gray area and the hidden can easily be treated as "deep", "philosophical" and "cultured" -- the recent DARK KINGHT is the most obvious example). The "same kind of fun" naturally refers to action. John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s Hollywood development completely proved this format. His peak abroad MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 is 100% formula genre film. Do not forget, Woo basically came from a "studio system" (Shaw's, Golden Harvest). To him, adjusting to and existing in Hollywood actually may very likely only be a matter of time. He also can under a variety of external restrictions still maintain certain level of individuality. Although MISSION is an absolute Tom Cruise vehicle, Woo still can find his own space and shoot his favorite song and dance and religious march scenes. Woo's "bad habit" is after crushing commercial/box office success his artist temper and ambition act up. On the surface, WINDTALKERS seems to be another Hollywood genre film (war film), but under Woo's handling the film resembles actually a mix of a Western and a wuxia film. Even more so, under the U.S. flag the film has to express a non U.S. / non racist spirit of we are all the same. The film ran into 911 and was forced to be postponed. I believed that the aforementioned theme was the real reason that Woo slipped, leading back to a question that was asked in the last column: Has Woo sold himself out to Hollywood? WINDTALKERS should be the best answer! - SHU KEI 3. TA KUNG PAO, AUGUST 3 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH RED CLIFF REVIEW CAN WAIT RED CLIFF (CHET BIK) has led to a lot of discussion. Some felt that the story was decent and some claimed that the screenplay was lacking. Who should be responsible ultimately for a movie's screenplay? In the U.S., after a screenplay is set producers would not easily permit the director to make changes. Thus most U.S. films have the original screenplay designs. Unfortunately with Hong Kong films often the director has the final say. Thus sometimes Best Screenplay does not come from the screen writers' pens. RED CLIFF has four screen writers, one of which is John Woo (Ng Yu Sum). The other three are industry masters, Chan Khan, Sheng Heyu and Kuo Cheng. Chan Khan told reporters that Director Woo had the final draft. Kuo Cheng pointed out that RED CLIFF only used one of his ideas, which was Cao Cao receiving a blank reply from Sun Quan (The original design's sender and letter were different). Kuo Cheng felt, RED CLIFF's real screen writer was Ng Yu Sum. This was the definite result of director, producer and screen writer being the same person, in other words "what one person says goes". Kuo Cheng's screenplay suggestions were very well rounded, perhaps because he participated in the screenplay creation. He felt, the director "lacked knowledge and confidence" in the Three Kingdoms spirit and aura; that was an era of storms and turbulence, life and death survival. The characters should not be like a house husband and concern themselves with baby delivery or bathing white doves. Kuo Cheng felt that the leads all lacked wit and ambition and did not resemble heroes and elites at all. He even compared RED CLIFF to ROMANCE OF THREE KINGDOMS and felt that although ROMANCE twisted history at least it has artistic value and brilliance on the surface; RED CLIFF's characters were failures, not to mention respecting history. Kuo Cheng even cited Woo's previous work WINDTALKERS as an example of Director Woo's failure due to lack of proper characterization. His summation was that the director did not have enough cultural background. When Director Woo drove historical figures he was not as comfortable as driving mob characters. However some film critics felt that RED CLIFF's personality changes to our familiar historical figures "romanticized" the subject out of stubbornness; in other words Director Woo did not made such changes out of naivety but deliberately. The strong criticism was the improvisational dialogue that created humorous comic relief, a specialty of Hong Kong films; some even claimed that Ng Yu Sum have picked up Hong Kong film's liberated energy and free will and overturned the "national film". A film review truly can be written however you want. For example you can say that RED CLIFF's liberty was not taken as far as THE PROMISE (MO GIK), or you can say that after his Hollywood baptism Ng Yu Sum still cannot shake off Hong Kong film's Mo Le Tau specialty. Then we would ask, which one is right? Actually after a year or so the public will come to its own conclusion because then we would know whether the film has made money as well as the entire world's mainstream reviews. Today we are very certain about THE BANQUET, CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, and even THE WARLORDS’ performance, quality so film critics who have packaged some more than obvious flaws into position points or deliberately magnified the flaws would not stand to the test of time. - TIN LIK 4. MING PAO DAILY, AUGUST 2 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS AFTER ARMOR EXHAUSTION COMES SPECIAL EFFECT EXHAUSTION A film distribution friend says, Hollywood film's market response actually was nothing like before aside from several super productions. Anyone who thought Hollywood film was very strong was only under the spell of several big films' performance and buzz. Hollywood big films is nothing more than eye catching special effects. THE DARK KNIGHT's success excited film lovers because it did not abuse computer generated special effects and concentrated on human nature. Of course, a minority of viewers who went to see a science fiction special effect film felt it was not fun enough. Chinese big films have given the audience armor exhaustion. If Hollywood big films keep going like this they would give the audience special effect exhaustion. In recent years many B rated films that only sold special effects have not had great box office in Hong Kong. Even super productions with stars and special specials, without good stories, would take a dive after first two weeks at the box office. In other places, small films would occasionally beat big films miraculously. Defeating Hollywood super productions tend to be some local productions, mostly comedies. To have such a miracle, local audience must have certain support for local films. At least they would not look down upon their own films. Audience choice also affects cinema schedules. Without cinema support, the miracle would not have happened. Two years ago Mainland's 30 million small production CRAZY STONE had cinema support to achieve this result. Although this miracle did not blaze any trail for small to mid scale Mainland productions. With Hong Kong currently a chance for a miracle is very slim. Many viewers look down upon Hong Kong films. The media make the matter worse as they have become unwilling to generate buzz for Hong Kong films. Hong Kong film success can only be achieved without the threat of any Hollywood super productions. We can only take one step at a time. - KWOK HIN CHING 5. MING PAO DAILY, JULY 31 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATION GIVING NUDE PHOTO VICTIMS ANOTHER CHANCE Reportedly Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi's television series would possibly pass inspection for Mainland broadcast. The nude photo incident has hindered the future of several young artists. Their completed work, both film and television, has not been approved. What several artists did behind closed doors has been revealed due to carelessness. After their privacy has been violated they instead received a moral judgment, which originally does not make any sense. Mainland authorities postponed their work due to their artist image issues reportedly because the earlier problems with the daring scenes in LUST, CAUTION (SIK, GAI) and LOST IN BEIJING. After the nude photo incident they had to "severely take charge". To investors, this was an unmitigated disaster. Their television series and films originally had no content issue. Only because artists' private photos were publicized, their image has suffered, they bear the risk of losing everything. if artists have image issue that the audience could not accept, they have to live with the market judgment. Inspection delay no matter how is unfair. Whether television series or film, if before production it has already included Mainland market profits, the loss of which would almost guarantee a loss. Ignoring inspection and releasing outside Mainland would on average have t3wo consequences, Mainland ban and guarantee the revenue is up in smoke; or possibly suspension sentence, as in investment and production companies for a future period cannot produce in Mainland. To avoid the aforementioned consequences, investment companies can only wait for a situation improvement. After the inspection tightening at the end of last year, film and television co-productions have become obviously less. Mainland also has a film shortage problem. The shortage has affected many people's livelihood and stunned entertainment industry development. Reportedly the inspection would gradually loosen and return to normal after the Olympics. If so, of course it is good news. The nude photo incident should come to an end. Its victims should have a chance to start again. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] LOOK FOR A STAR Can : Sing Mung Kei Yuen Lit : Star Dream Fantasy Destiny d.
