MISCELLANEOUS * (6/11/2008) The John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) directed RED CLIFF (CHET BIK) has not had a smooth production from the start. Before production male lead Chow Yun Fat resigned in the last time and finally Tony Leung Chiu Wai took over in a friendly gesture. Later Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) was rumored to be at odds with the director and thus was absent from the Cannes Film Festival promotion. Yesterday the team issued a press statement to confirm a boat crash during the shoot. Around 3 AM on June 9, while shooting a two boat crash scene in Beijijng an accident took place that took the life of one stunt person and injured six. The team was deeply saddened and regretful and would try its best to take care of the victims. The team was shooting Huang Gai's on fire Wu boat crashing into the larger Cao boat. After the shoot the wind made the fire burn out of control. Within seconds the fire has swallowed both boats. Several stunt people due to the sudden fire suffered burns, one even passed away from the injuries. Ng Yu Sum who was promoting the first installment of the film expressed sorrow when he received the bad news and rushed back to Beijing to take care of the victims and complete the film's final part. * (6/11/2008) The annual Taiwan Golden Horse Award will take place on December 6 in Taichung. Earlier a Democratic Progressive Party council member did not welcome Jackie Chan's attendance due to his 2004 comment of "Taiwan Presidential Election is a joke". Earlier the Taichung city government met over the Golden Horse Award fund allocation application and Big Brother Jackie Chan was one of the subjects. When the city council discussed the city government's suggestion to add NT$20 million as the Golden Horse award budget it added a condition to suggest keeping Jackie Chan from attending. One of the council person who suggested "throwing eggs at Jackie Chan" suggested rejecting the application and the award could raise fund from rich business people like Terry Kuo. Another council member expressed that currently most Golden Horse Award winners were Hong Kong films, the ceremony itself did not help Taiwan films, and suggested a stop to the event. However, some Kuomingtung council members also supported Jackie Chan and felt that Jackie Chan's comments 4 years ago were very correct so he did not need to apologize. Taichung mayor Jason Hu felt that politics should not interfere with art and art should be given the largest space. The Golden Horse Award comittee would decide whether Jackie Chan would attend and the city government would respect the decision. The Golden Horse chief secretary was very surprised to hear the anti Jackie Chan sentiment from the Taichung city council, as last month the chief has personally invited Jackie Chan to attend at the Cannes Film Festival and Jackie Chan would gladly attend if his schedule permitted. The JC Group issued a statement in Taipei yesterday. "No matter what, Jackie Chan cares about Taiwan. His motivation for chairty work and community service for service is as it has always been. Would the media please stop coordinating ugly photos, misleading the meaning of his comments and twisting Jackie Chan's original intent? Thank you!" * (6/11/2008) Wong Chui Yu was injured while making the film DUET BIU (CHAMPIONSHIP). She even needed to rest in a wheelchair during recovery and had to take nearly a month off from work. With the attentive care of her coleagues now she has completely healed and returned to work again. Wong Chui Yu earlier shot the race again. With her just healed leg injury the shoot was indeed somewhat tough. After a month in a wheelchair her limps have stiffen. While stretching her face showed signs of pain and when she ran she had to use a lot of strength. The team kept cheering her on and the motivation touched her. She said, "Before the earthquake I only knew to worry about my own injury and often secretly sobbed, making a big deal out of something so minor. Now I realize that I am so insignificant. In comparison to their pain how bad was my leg injury? I can recover so quickly completely due to everyone's support and encouragement, so I understand that what the Sichuan victims need the most is our care. With support they can come out of the darkness and rebuild the light." * (6/11/2008) Bianca Hu (Wu Lam) was a guest host for a Roadshow program and interviewed Jun Kung Shek Leung. Kung Shek Leung lately has been busy with the film TUNG MOON (COLLEAGUE), in which he played a mob boss. Earlier while shooting a fight scene in Mongkok over 70 extras were hired. Yet because it was late night everyone was prohibited from making noise and could only shoot in silence. * (6/9/2008) Angelica Lee Sinjie yesterday attended THE MISSING (SUM HOI CHUM YUN) charity ticket sales. The film company's boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming came in support. Although the tickets were $50, Sinjie hoped that people would pay more to support the disaster victims. As far as she knew, the film company this time donated 20000 tickets, 10000 of which were used for charity sales and the other 10000 were given to low income people. At the same time charity premieres would take place in Hong Kong and Beijing. Premiere tickets have already been rapidly sold out. The other lead Isabella Leong Lok Si could not attend the promotion. Sinjie said, "I too wish that she could attend because it would be more cheerful and fun, but even if she couldn't attend it's no big deal. I believe she has her reason." She also said that during the shoot she and Isabella had a lot to talk about and traded books to read. They even became good friends. She felt that her desire to learn was very strong so reading more would be good for her. Wong Pak Ming expressed that Isabella has contacted them and expressed that she would like to assist with the promotion. She would send photos to the film company and then collect the media questions over email for interviews, but she would not attend the premiere. Although Japanese chefs and Mainland tourists made donations but the people's response were not overwhelming. Sinjie believed that the media presence scared off those who did not want to be on camera. This was not Sinjie's first earthquake fund raising. Earlier she also helped at the Great Taiwan Earthquake and even personally experienced it. She said, "Back then I was on the 11th floor and very close to death, so now when I see the Sichuan disaster I feel very sad." Sinjie said that being able to help others is fortunate. As long as she can help others, she does not know care what she has to do. She said that she would like to visit the disaster area if she has a chance, not only Sichuan also Myanmar. * (6/9/2008) The office of the Hong Kong baseball team starred CITY WITHOUT BASEBALL (MO YEH JI SING) director Scud (Wan Yu) earlier was vandalized. Aside from the film poster outside being torn, the glass on the door was also shattered. Later Scud has already contacted the police. He suspected that the cause of the vandalism may have to do with two of the film's stars and Hong Kong baseball team members Leung Yu Chung and Heung Chi Chun appeared on a radio program that examines homosexuality. Leung made some personal comments that riled up the some in the gay community. Scud expressed willingness to appear on the program and clarify the misunderstanding. Leung Yu Chung honestly said, "Perhaps because on the program I admitted to be 'homophobic' some weren't comfortable to hear that. However that is just my personal opinion, the situation is like a girl's fear of running into a sex attacker. I won't change my opinion, Hong Kong has freedom of speech." * (6/7/2008) The Herman Yau Lai To directed film TUNG MOON (COLLEAGUE) has already wrapped. Two nights ago a celebration was held. Cast members Shawn Yue Man Lok, Ada Choi Siu Fun, Chapman To Man Jat, Elanne Kong Yuek Lam and Paul Wong Koon Chung attended. Everyone raised their herbal tea in lieu of wine for the toast and wished for a good performance. June 8 will be To Man Jat's birthday and everyone presented a giant birthday bun to celebrate. Ah Jat revealed that later when he will attend the Sydney Film Festival with his wife they will try to have a child. As for his birthday wish, when Ah Jat was about to say sirens rang. He joked, "I wish the most for this sound to quickly disappear." The crowd roared. Ah Jat's buddy Yue Man Lok did not plan to give any gift and joked that taking him out to dinner would be enough. However, he said that since both Ah Jat and his wife were vegetarians, going to dinner would be rather troublesome. He joked that he was plowing the field and he would have no strength with a little less meat. He was rather picky with food rather ordinarily. Choi Siu Fung in the film played a mobster and constantly had to smoke, which was certainly difficult for a non smoker like her. She could only "learn" from the crew. However, the director praised her for having the potential of being a bad woman as her performance was very convincing. In the film she also had to use foul language, which she said that sometimes she could not help but laugh. She also revealed that her manager contract would end at the end of June. Because her manager's health condition has not been well she would not extend her contract. For now she would field jobs on her own while looking for a new manager. Lai Hoi San gave a pair of earrings to Choi Siu Fun. She said that Choi Siu Fung has worn that pair while competing in the Miss Hong Kong pageant. She later bought a pair for herself but never wore it. However to Ada it had sentimental value so she gave it to her as a wedding present. * (6/6/2008) Shawn Yue Man Lok, Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam, Chapman To Man Jat, and Ella Koon Yun Na two nights ago worked on their new film in Tai Kok Tsui when a drunk man proceeded to yell at his daughter and even pulled her into the streets. The police had to intervene. The Herman Yau Lai To directed film TUNG MOON (COLLEAGUE) two nights ago shot a car crash scene. Because the entire car had to flip over, the entire cast had to use doubles. After the drunk man left, the cast continued the shoot. Kong Yeuk Lam's injured look was the most terrifying. She said when she looked into a mirror she even frightened herself. To Man Jat's birthday will be on the 8th. The team gave him a surprise birthday celebration two nights ago. As for his birthday wish, he said, "I didn't think about it. I wish everyone donate more money to disaster relief." Ah Jat joked that he had a lot of car crash experience and thus volunteered to perform the stunt personally with the director. The director declined. Ah Jat said, "With building jumps and fighting scenes he would ask for a double, but with a car crash scene I would volunteer because I have more experience. During the crash I can very calmly handle it." Yue Man Lok agreed with To Man Jat's car crash experience claim. "He once lent me his car for a night. Since then I haven't seen it again. I at least have one night relationship with it, I am truly sorry for his cars!" * (6/5/2008) Mandarin new film YIP MUN (originally titled YUT DOI JUNG SI YIP MUN) due to title conflict with Wong Kar Wai's earlier announced project upset Wong Kar Wai as well as some in the industry. Mandarin boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming in order to settle the matter yesterday officially announced the title to be YIP MUN. Wong Pak Ming expressed, "Actually Mandarin has always wanted to use the title YIP MUN, but the Chinese investors felt that Yip Mun indeed was an undiscounted master of a generation so they asked for the title change. To respect everyone's opinion, the film company changed the title to be YUT DOI JUNG SI YIP MUN. We never expect that would lead to controversy with other colleagues. In order to settle this title matter, I have met with many Chinese investors, chief consultant Master Yip Jun and the director in hopes of balancing the side's opinion." Wong continued, "Today we finally come to an agreement and feel that a title isn't worth any dispute with colleagues. Ultimately the movie comes first and the title is secondary. Our biggest responsibility is to make this movie well and to spread Wing Chun gong fu. In addition now Hong Kong film industry needs mutual industry collaboration the most. Because compromise and unity are its biggest power, we are officially announcing to the press that our film will be titled YIP MUN." Also, director Wilson Yip Wai Shun expressed, "The story will have Bruce Lee. After numerous casting calls I still haven't been able to find the right actor and I feel that not just anyone can play Bruce Lee, so I decide to conduct a global search for Bruce Lee in hopes of finding someone who will be suitable to play Bruce Lee in YIP MUN. I believe with so many Bruce Lee fans around the world the chance of finding him will be much better." * (6/5/2008) Jackie Chan has learned that 20 Mainland companies would be interested in a disaster relief film but he would like to ask everyone to gather their strength to make two or three of the most exciting films. Otherwise the story will easily repeat. When the 20th one arrives, no one conceivably will want to watch anymore. Jackie Chan also said that he had no interest in directing or casting. He said that such a movie will take at least a year and a half to two years to make. Thus if the market will have 40 some films they will be meaningless. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 11 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS WOMEN SEX FILM HAS MARKET SEX AND THE CITY moved from television to the big screen and still succeeded. Its US box office has been good and its Hong Kong opening last week was 810,000. Category III films with female audience support are few. Ang Lee's LUST, CAUTION (SIK, GAI) was also deeply popular with the female audience and the box office was extremely good. Female viewers actually rather enjoy sex films but are rather picky, unlike male viewers who are satisfied with female stars who are willing to strip and certain amount of nude scenes. When the film market was quiet, two types of low budget films could make money, horror and category III sex films. Now category III is harder to make than horror films. The main problem is female stars are hard to find. Without slightly known female stars who are willing to make their first sacrifice attracting male viewers would be very hard. If the female stars are unknown, like casting Japanese adult video stars, the films are not as daring as Japanese adult video. As the internet developes rapidly, it is full of pornographic information. Not only can category III adult video be obtained for free, even daring category IV can be viewed online. To make a category III sex film, the first requirement is to convince at least one female stars who has never performed in the nude to "show points". Female viewers look down until low budget category III sex films as their requirements are even higher than men's. Well known female stars are required, as well as pretty people, clothing and scenery. For a Hong Kong film investment, it is extremely uneconomical especially wne it definitely does not have any Mainland market. Even Hollywood productions may not necessarily have female supporters. SEX AND THE CITY has earlier success on television and won their recognition, thus it was so successful. Women rarely go to the category III films alone. Most go in a group, which is also very helpful to the box office. Even if SEX AND THE CITY is not category III it would still be just as successful. The gross of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA shows all. Women sex market has always existed because the film supply is too few. - KWOK HIN CHING 2. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 10 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS PROMOTION THAT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF A SITUATION IS DESPICABLE Whenever something big happens, whether it has anything to do with show business reporters would ask artists about it. Anyone who answers politely the media may not report because the answers are too reasonable and do not have much news value. Instead when someone misspeaks or can be misunderstood big stories could be written. To certain artists, whether positive or negative exposure is good. They can take the chance for more people to know them and receive days of coverage. Anyone whose popular is already rising and has a bright future, negative exposure is not good. Because originally he or she has news a plenty or is the target of certain media for negative news to push up sales. Under this situation he or she must watch his or her word. Indeed certain media would target several artists and often use their negative news for cover stories. These artists not only watch what they say or do but also should be happy inside. If no one reads their negative news the press absolutely would not target them time after time. Young artists who have just risen have greater chance of misspeaking in public. One of the reasons if they are too young and do not know how to express themselves. Reporters of course like to ask them because the chance of them making a mistake is greater than experienced artists. When something big happens, managers should instruct young artists how to respond early on. Hong Kong managers would rarely pay attention to this area. Most only try to get jobs for artists as much as possible. Artist assistants do not think much more maturely than young artists, even when they tightly follow them they have no way to stop them from saying something wrong. The writer feels that when young people misspeak or express poorly they can publicly apologize and be forgiven. The worst are artists who cannot wait to take advantage of other people's negative news and make themselves outstanding. Self promotion with outstanding comments about someone else's mistake actually does not help artists at all. It may even be despicable. - KWOK HIN CHING 3. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 9 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS DIFFERENTIATION UNDER UNITY During the live broadcast of the disaster relief show, some criticized TVB for switching back to the studio when other television stations' artists performed. If the live producer was afraid of making a mistake and did so, the writer could understand; but if it was the entire station's policy, then that truly had some problems. For the all for one disaster relief performance everyone have abandoned their differentiation and united to make this event good. Several hundred artists participated. Among them are artists with and without TVB contracts. If TVB still differentiates, it should treat everyone the same and keep all non contract artists off screen. With this type of disaster relief shows, if another stations' artist performance is aired they would not benefit much. Instead perhaps it would absorb some of those stations' viewers. This is often the difference between looking positively and negatively. Each station should have already met long before broadcasting this type of group show business show and discussed each detail. Experienced executives and producers would suggest the issue of whether airing rival stations' artist performance. If not it would be very strange. If a policy exists for live broadcast, especially when the production right does not belong solely to one electronic medium everything must be discussed clearly internally in advance. Advanced studio preparation and hosts for program transition are definite. The live producer decides when to cut back to the studio. Because too many performance units are involved, even with a rough schedule everyone knows a lot of improvisation situation would take place. Producers have to have enough ability to react. Everyone would know which artist from each station would perform. If someone decides not to air rival station artists' segment the station has the freedom to edit. When you do not show theirs, they can still show yours. Whether you are at an advantage or a disadvantage would depend on the decision maker's personal generosity and thinking. Whether all for one is a slogan or actual practice, viewers can see. - KWOK HIN CHING 4. TA KUNG PAO, JUNE 8 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH SHOW BUSINESS DISASTER RELIEF SHOW'S ENDLESS GOSSIP This time the national disaster relief event has caught worldwide attention. Many touching stories have stemmed from it. It also provided overseas media with rare Chinese people and leadership's concern for life and rebuilding. In Hong Kong, show business disaster relief event has created great result that received Chinese people's praise. However, after the June 1 performance many show business internal negative "disputes" have appeared as those involved became the target of tabloid coverage. One of the reports claimed that Andy Lau Tak Wa kept Eason Chan Yik Shun from performing in Chengdu. Lau Tak Wa of course denied that he participated in deciding the guest list. Reportedly the decision would have laid with the television station and experienced producers like Zhang Guoli. Lau Tak Wa constantly stated in interviews that Chan Yik Shun is an outstanding singer and their relationship has been decent. Chan Yik Shun also pointed out that too many artists in the disaster area might hinder rescue work and should not be forced. Criticism against Lau Tak Wa actually has already started soon after the earthquake because Lau Tak Wa donated 100,000 on the first day after the earthquake. Many "online users" felt that he was too cheap. When Hong Kong found out about the Sichuan earthquake Lau has already donated 100,000 without knowing the severity of the damage and was prepared to join disaster relief. Of course Lau later continued to donate and to avoid any further trouble everyone was reluctant to discuss donation amount. Actually donation comes from the heart, how much is unimportant. "Online users" comments sometimes are more extreme. Artists like Lau Tak Wa who are so involved in disaster relief should not receive strong criticism. A person's achievement and worth should not be the reason for criticism. Another rumor that is disadvantagous to show business was at the after June 1 performance celebration, East Asia artists left in tow in a protest against Eric Tsang Chi Wai's use of "foul language". Reportedly Tsang Chi Wai felt in the entire program East Asia artists acted like they owned the show and overshadowed the Performing Artist Guild. That day over 100 artists performed and truly no one would have felt that East Asia stars occupied the stage. The event was not solely Performing Artist Guild organized. Mainly the Film Worker Union and other film organizations organized it. The only missing part was at the swearing in ceremony (opening) not every organization was named and directly stated the event's structure and source of the resource. After the "incident", East Asia and Tsang Chi Wai did not directly respond and proved that suspicion. Yet Alan Tam Wing Lun indirectly confirmed Chi Wai's "foul language" fact. The writer felt that was the true problem. Mr. Tsang is a famous Hong Kong host but often due to low class humor at inappropriate events (like the Hong Kong Film Award) he has displeased some. Lately his SUPER TRIO SUPREME has also received complaint. The general public leaned toward the censor's decision this time. - TIN LIK 5. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 7 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS NO NEED TO BE OVERLY SENSITVIE ABOUT ARTIST COMMENTS While Sharon Stone apologies for her Sichuan Earthquake "karma" comment, new local star Janice Man Wing San is also accused of a questionable comment and has been partially blasted online. Reportedly Man Wing San said that the big earthquake may be related to the lack of environmental protection. Actually she is not the first person to mention that. Soon after the Sichuan Earthquake, some scientists have already claimed that the human devastation on the ecological environment may trigger natural disasters like earthquakes. Environmental protection is a problem that has worldwide attention, and China has been very active in this area. Any comment that states the Sichuan earthquake may be related to environment destruction may not necessarily be an attack on the Chinese people. The world is one place. Everyone has heard the so-called "butterfly effect". A flip of a butterfly's wings in South America would affect the other side of the world and trigger a storm. If the earthquake in China truly is related to natural ecology destruction, the flaw may not be with China. The public does not need to be overly sensitve and claim that any and all comments are against Chinese people and disrespectful to the victims. Sharon Stone's comments reflect some foreigners' true view. She apologies of course due to the pressure from everywhere including advertisers. Hong Kong artists would not be like her; no matter how little experience they have they could not possibly be because they are all Chinese. Seeing their own suffering how can they without any proof directly or indirectly claim they are suffering their own consequences? Some media like to exaggerate artist comments and mislead. A detailed reading may uncover the matter is something else entirely. The Internet is a free speech platform. Inevitably some users may express severe reprimand without looking clearly into the artist comment's true meaning. The media love to use extreme online comments the most no matter how much support they have. As long as someone is being boycotted they report them. In turn they encourage excessive comment because anything that upholds fairness would not be covered. Thus more and more online comments criticize artists as much as they want. Information overload needs brain filtering even more. - KWOK HIN CHING 6. MING PAO DAILY, JUNE 6 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS NEW FEMALE STAR HAVE LARGER DEVELOPMENT SPACE The growing number of small to mid scale Hong Kong women films has its reasons. Big films need big stars. More stars with Hong Kong box office draw are male than female. Big films without male stars of calibre and are women driven would give a light impression. The male cast tells what is a big film. This is a traditional view that still has not changed today. Thus some say that film is masculine. Small to mid scale films are different. Aside from some box office breaking or big film support actor who successfuly becomes male lead old style films, small to mid scale films that take new commercial route are mostly about women. Among new stars, women obviously rise easier. They may only have the local market and no overseas recognition, but success at the local market is enough for them. Those who make small to mid scale films that mainly sell overseas have lower and lower Hong Kong box office and overseas as well. Their revenue is the remaining value from the previous market peak. Second to third tier male star salaries are not cheap either. Some ask for more than 1 million. They do not have local box office guarantee but they are known overseas. Making a new male star is harder than a new female star. One of the reasons is male stars mature later than female stars. For the same twenty something age, female star performance would be steadier than male star. It is very obvious on the silver screen. Their performance are mainly for young viewers. Both male and female viewers accept female new comers easier, but male new comers have difficulty with pleasing both. Male viewers find new male stars who only sell their good looks hard to accept. These new stars' acting indeed is immature. Their performance pales in comparison to female stars of the same age. The more new male stars sell their look the worse their acting is, which has also become a standard. Perhaps they are too self awre and have difficulties getting into character. Male stars used to wait until 30s before maturing, but now the market changes too rapidly. Who knows if they would have enough time and opportunities to be cultivated. New female stars in the short term market would have better development opportunities. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Jing Yun Lit : Witness Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Zhang Jingchu, Sherman Chung Shu Man ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2009 Can : Ga Yau Hei Si 2009 Lit : Family Has Joyous Event 2009 d.
