Denise Ho Wan Si who celebrates her birthday on the 10th 2. MISCELLANEOUS * (5/13/2008) Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, director Vincent Kuk Tak Siu, planner Clifton Ko Chi Sum and boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming yesterday attended the film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2009 (GA YAU HEI SI 2009) press conference. The last two ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL was made in 92 and 97. This sequel is already over a decade later. Kuk Tak Siu said that he got into the business in 91 and already had the chance to be a writer on ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 1992. Yesterday Ko Chi Sum handed the take board to Kuk Tak Siu in a passing of the torch of sorts. Kuk Tak Siu also took out a group photo of ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 1992. He said, "The photo had the entire cast's personal autographs. I brought it this time to suppress my fear." Ng Kwan Yu and Wong Pak Ming both appeared with torches in a sign of continuation of ALL'S. Wong Pak Ming expressed, earlier he kept on calling Kwan Yu who happened to be out of town. This time approaching her for the role was rather difficult. Luckily she agreed right away, otherwise the film would not have been made. he said that originally Kwan Yu planned to have another child, not for this film he told Kwan Yu not to. Kwan Yu joked that when she went to Wong Pak Ming's company for a meeting he seemed to be under some spell and kept asking her whether he was handsome. She joked that Pak Ming has not changed over the years. She said, "Earlier we played a couple, I had to swallow that for so many years. This time I had to swallow it again. Luckily we have Koo Tin Lok, then I agreed to return." Later, Kwan Yu expressed that in the film she indeed would play a couple with Koo Tin Lok but she did not ask for that. In the film Wong Pak Ming would be a suitor as well. Wong Pak Ming joked, "I definitely would force her to swallow me." Koo Tin Lok revealed that he and Kwan Yu would have intimate scenes. Kwan Yu said that a comedy would not have any too passionate intimate scenes and would only be for laughs. Kwan Yu expressed, this time she no longer had to play the homebody and instead she would play a businesswoman and a female writer. She honestly said that this time her parenthood plan has been stalled but she has already negotiated with Peter Chan Ho Sun. Wong Pak Ming expressed that this time 40 million would be invested on this film. The cast will head to Qiandaohu for location shoot. Currently two actresses still have not been announced. He hoped to be able to get Sheila Chan Suk Lan and Teresa Mo Shun Kwan to guest star. As for Stephen Chow Sing Chi and Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, Wong Pak Ming honestly said that would be very difficult. Goo Jai was called the stone faced comedian while Cheng Chung Kei a comedy expert. Their collaboration would conceivably bring viewers a lot of joy. Koo Tin Lok expressed that in the film he and Ng Kwan Yu would have a few intimate scenes. He would not mind being intimate with her, if the story required it and it was funny then he would have no problem. Goo Jai expressed that he would not give himself any stress because it was a sequel. Goo jai revealed that this time he would appear in swimwear like James Bond coming out of the water. He said that the film company would choose the style so he would have to train his abs before the shoot. Goo Jai and Cheng Chung Kei have been separately linked to Miriam Yeung Chin Wa. Goo Jai expressed that he has never officially worked with Cheng Chung Kei. Later Goo Jai and Cheng Chung Kei graciously posed for photos together and had a lot of talk about. Cheng Chung Kei in the film would have a girlfriend. A Mainland actress would play the role. He said that he has already seen the last two ALL'S. Both were so brilliant that the production would be a little stressful this time. He said, earlier he and Goo Jai worked on a Chapman To Man Jat short film. He expressed that they would set off sparks this time because the screenplay was very ample. Goo Jai rarely talked ordinarily, was he afraid of communication difficulty? He felt that they would not as Goo Jai just talked a lot just now. Cheng Chung Kei even revealed that sometimes he would discuss with Goo Jai to add more comedy. * (5/12/2008) Stephy Tang Lai Yun, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei and Lee Man Kwun yesterday worked on the film NOI YI SIU NUI (UNDERWEAR GIRL). Stephy said that for now she did not know whether she would appear in underwear, if so the set would definitely be cleared. However she saw two underwear models and felt embarrassed. Stephy expressed that she could not accept appearing in the underwear, perhaps she would only dare to wear the top half. Stephy expressed that she was more conservative and wanted to maintain a sense of mystery. Yet she also liked to buy sexy underwear for her collection. Since shopping for underwear was very awkward she would rather shop online. Stephy also said that she absolutely could not accept her boyfriend shopping for underwear with her. Stephy said that she would only wear underwear for herself. "I have a sexy side too, and I am not the very traditional type of girl. However underwear shopping is very public. I have purchased sleepwear online for several thousand." Cheng Chung Kei in the film played an underwear company and in one scene she had to wear a bra to demonstrator to the ladies how to turn a flat chest into a D cup. When asked whether he would introduce the trick to Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Cheng Chung Kei said, "Can I not answer this question? However I answer I am dead." Cheng Chung Kei said that in several scenes he would face girls only in bras, but he expressed that he was not afraid of embarrassment because he has seen it before. He would not scream out of surprise. * (5/12/2008) The 10th Annual Taipei Film Festival will open in June. Yesterday a press conference was held to announce this year's participants. The Taipei Film Award would be divided into three categories of full length feature, documentary short and unrestricted feature, animation or experimental. The first of the full length feature would receive NT$1 million. The press conference invited big time director Hou Hsiao-Hsien to attend and announce this year's participants. Sundream's SUMMER'S TAIL (HA TIN DIK MEI BA) qualified for the film award full length feature. Director Cheng Man Tong did not attend but said, "SUMMER'S TAIL was my individual new attempt. The film was also my daughter Enno's silver screen debut. I actually care more about everyone's recognition for SUMMER and my new attempt. This qualification is already the best recognition and encouragement for SUMMER'S TAIL." Another Sundream film, Mainland 6th generation director Zhang Yibai, Karen Morris (Mok Man Wai) starred new film LIST INDULGENCE (MAI GOR) will premiere at the Taipei Film Festival. * (5/11/2008) Tsui Tin Yau revealed that lately he has been busy with the film NOI YI SIU NUI (UNDERWEAR GIRL), in which he has been required to appear topless. Thus in recent months he has been running like mad to get into shape. Later he will even have to appear in a Speedo with a group of actresses. He said, "The film company has expressed that the scene will be shot on the 16th. Since that day will be my birthday, they will celebrate with me. Actually that scene will have special meaning, the selling point of which is not on the underwear." * (5/10/2008) Sam Lee Chan Sam and model Janice Man Wing San yesterday attended a Disney product press conference. They even tried their hands on graffiti and put Mickey Mouse in graffiti art. Even though his fashion business is doing well, Sam has not forgotten his film career. In days he will head to China to continue work on the film POR MONG (BROKEN NET), the first action film for director Xiong Xin Xin (Hung Yun Yun) since his return from Hollywood. The female lead Chiang Luxia was a Beijing wushu academy student and has been called China's Tony Jaa. Sam joked, "Although she and I have a lot of scenes together, she is responsible for protecting me so I don't have to fight." After completing the film in early June he would be busy with his Guangzhou fashion store opening. * (5/10/2008) The Cannes Film Festival will open Tuesday. Director Tsui Siu Ming will bring Sundream's latest DUET BIU to introduce to overseas buyers. Many film stills will be unveiled there, including ones with highly difficult stunts with Dicky Cheung Wai Kin to demonstrate the "performance of power". Cheung Wai Kin and Tsui Siu Ming spent all night to select the few from thousands of photos. Dicky said, "I still remember that day I fought for 10 full hours from the start to the finish. I was already very tired but I knew that the selected photos would be for distribution purposes. I had to help because this time I am the lead actor. I have to demonstrate the strongest and most powerful look and action in the photos. In addition, this film is my first after signing with Sundream. I too hope tihs film can make big money for the company and hit big in all the overseas markets!" Among many stills is one with Huang Cuiyu in a towel, Dicky said, "I deeply believe that overseas buyer would have a very good impression of the film with such a cute girl as the female lead." Huang Cuiyu said, "When I saw the still I felt my figure was truly lacking! I hope buyers would be scared off! Haha......" * (5/8/2008) Mandarin partnered with other companies and invested 80 million yuan to produce the new film YUT DOI JUNG SI YIP MUN (MASTER OF A GENERATION YIP MUN), an action film that would be the fourth joint production of the "gold label team" Wilson Yip Wai Shun and Donnie Yen Chi Tan. Portraying Master Yip Mun in the film, Yen Chi Tan admits that he has looked forward the most to the role in his over 20 year long career and would like to play it well. Chi Tan expresses, his connection to Master Yip Mun goes back ten years when Wong Kar Wai, Jeff Lau Chun Wai and Corey Yuen Kwai planned a big screen adaptation of Master Yip Mun's story. He was invited to play Yip Mun while Stephen Chow Sing Chi was invited to play Bruce Lee. Although he signed the contract and took the down payment, finally the film company dissolved and the plan was set aside. Ten years later he is again cast to play Yip Mun. Chi Tan says, "Ten years later, I have even deeper understanding of film and martial art. Yip Mun is the role that I look forward to and would like to play well the most. The production team and I are confident about shaping a classic character." Director Yip Wai Shun from SPL (SAT POR LONG) to DRAGON TIGER GATE (LUNG FU MOON) to FLASH POINT (DOH FOR SIN) has already formed a "gold label team" of modern Chinese action film with Chi Tan. For their fourth collaboration the investors have invited Sammo Hung Kam Bo as the action director. Hung Kam Bo expresses that this time for visual effects basically would not use any stunt double. Aside from the aforementioned teams, everyone's attention of course is on the film debut of model Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam), who expresses that she has read many screenplays but none has been especially favorable until Director Yip Wai Shun told her this story. She agreed right away to play Yip Mun's wife. * (5/8/2008) The film TUNG MOON (CLASSMATE) two nights ago held a production start ceremony in Sham Shui Po. Director Herman Yau Lai To and actors Shawn Yue Man Lok, Ada Choi Siu Fun, Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam, Ella Koon Yun Na and Chapman To Man Jat attended. Because the film would be a mob film, the film company held a street red wine banquet as the cast boldly drank. Choi Siu Fun who has not made a film for a long time explained that she returned to film because she has always wanted to work with director Yau Lai To. She believed that her acting would be on display in this film. Later she would head to Thailand for location shoots. Since marrying Zhang Jun, Ada and her husband have been working nonstop. She honestly said that their revenue has increased. She hoped to be able to make more money for the rainy day. As for having a child, she said that work would come first now. Would she work on any passionate kiss scene after marriage? Ada joked that why she would not be allowed to make the sacrifice since her husband has said that she could. She said that they respect each other. Most importantly they focus at work but after work they are able to leave their roles behind. Yue Man Lok's eyes were red, which he attributed to drinking. He had to work on a drunk scene. The cinematographer said that after drinking his eyes would be bloodshot and one look could tell whether he was drunk or not. For realism, he drank half a bottle of whiskey before the shoot. Was he afraid of acting up after drinking? He said that after drinking he usually would just sleep and not speak randomly. Ah Lok this time played a mob boss' bodyguard. In the story he got a day off in a year, but on this day something big happened. To Man Chat supposedly has crossed so many people that last year his thriving career stalled and he had financial issues. Ah Jat denied that he had money trouble and stressed that this was already his second film this year. He said that the magazines were making up stories. Ella in the film changed from her usual sexy singer image to play a female shooter. To play this role she recently has been practicing how to hold a gun in hopes of being able to be convincing. Jun Kung Shek Leung would slap Koon Yun Na in one scene, which she expressed that she was very nervous over. However, she not only did not wish he would go easy on her but also wanted him to slap her hard. That way she would not have to suffer more slaps due to bad takes. After INVISIBLE TARGETS (NAM YI BOON SIK) Kong Yeuk Lam would again work with Yue Man Lok and this time would have a crush on Ah Lok. * (5/8/2008) Shawn Yue Man Lok and Bonnie Sin Sik Lai's new film THE MOSS (CHING TOI) will be released at the end of the month. Lok Jai in the film would play an undercover cop. Although in recent years he has been productive he has never played this type of character. He said that he resembled a Wise Guy more than a cop. He had to play a cop who was very glad to do his job with the prostitutes, which was not easy to play but was very refreshing. Bonnie had to play a prostitute for her second role. She believed that the challenge was larger and even developed a relationship with Lok Jai. Bonnie felt that it was somewhat difficult. "This character truly was somewhat hard to play. Sometimes I need to act with my eyes and expressions. At first I was very worried about not being able to capture the soul of the character, but the director taught and explained along the way and Lok Jai gave me a lot of suggestions from the sideline and brought me into character. He told me to be more natural, which enabled me to freely perform." A prostitute and an entrapment cop of course could not avoid bed scenes, but Bonnie kept them under wraps. "Normally I don't dress too sexily. This time I play a prostitute, everyone please remember to go to the movie and check it out!" [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, MAY 14 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS ACTORS SHOULD TRUST DIRECTORS Reportedly Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) would not promote RED CLIFF (CHET BIK) in Cannes because he was upset with the screenplay. The biggest investment in Chinese film history has had more than one actor problem already. At first Tony Leung Chiu Wai turned down the Zhuge Liang role, which Gum Sing Mo immediately picked up. Then Chow Yun Fat had problems and Leung Chiu Wai rushed in to take the Zhou Yu role. Actor displeasure over screenplay is often heard about during film and television production. Before accepting the role they would be best served by first reading the screenplay and communicating with the director more. Communication is more important than screenplay reading because the screenplay may be changed time and again. The production version and the initial version may not be the same. With screenplay reading alone, not everyone would get what the director has in mind. Thus communication is the best way. Yet if the director and the actor both are more self centered and are hard to communicate with, problem arises. A director is the author of the entire film. An actor no matter what is a "tool" that expresses the author's imaginary world. After accepting a role, an actor most importantly should trust the director. Otherwise he or she should not take the role. Without trust, a director cannot possibly make this character well. How can an actor get into a role without believing in it? How can an actor perform well? An actor perhaps has his or her own understanding of the character. Yet he or she only plays one role in the film. He or she cares about his or her own part. A director watches over the entire film, including each character and each frame of the film. He creates the entire world in the film. Some professional actors feel that after reading the screenplay they can reflect their opinions to the director, but as soon as the production starts, they should accept the director's instructions whether their opinions are accepted or not. The best actors are able to display an unique performance after leaving themselves behind. - KWOK HIN CHING 2. MING PAO DAILY, MAY 13 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS STARS WHO ARE STUCK IN BETWEEN The writer feels that the most authentic Hong Kong films have to be the pre and post 97 Hong Kong style Mo Le Tau comedies. At the time the social upheaval has led viewers to like anti intellectual comedy. They have not minded the production or whether the actors have been seriously performing, all they have been after was a laugh. From the overseas sales angle, these local comedies have made the Hong Kong film market shrink further. Yet because of their low to mid scale budget, good Hong Kong box office with video and basic overseas revenue would have already netted profit. These films all performed poorly overseas. Mainland inspections might have rejected them due to excessively nonsensical content. Over ten years, Mo Le Tau style comedy has made many stars. With his forward thinking, Stephen Chow Sing Chi released SHAOLIN SOCCER (SIU LUM JOOK KAU) the year before the World Cup, reduced a lot of nonsense dialogue, added action comedy elements and computer generated special effects to successfully launched himself internationally. This change has also made him lose the authenticate Hong Kong style comedy flavor that local viewers like. Comedy stars who have risen to fame later than him have had two problems, excessive film salary increase and Mo Le Tau style comedy box office downturn. When film companies do not make much and take more risks, they naturally hire the actors less. Another problem is viewers have started to grow tired of these comedy stars' performance style. They themselves have felt that they needed change and some have taken less comedy and changed their genre. Genre change is not easy because these stars differ from the ones who rose in the 80s. Those earlier stars have had a lot of performance experience from television. When they worked there they worked on anything and everything. Their range was wider. So no matter what genre was in vogue they have been able to play it. Not every comedy stars who have risen over the last decade have had good dramatic backgrounds. Instead more have their own unique performance style that are more acceptable to viewers, thus work kept coming to them. They have the determination to change, but they cannot possibly change just by saying so. If they do not change well, they would be stuck in between. - KWOK HIN CHING 3. MING PAO DAILY, MAY 12 2008, FILM WORDS THIS DARLING LIFE: HONG KONG SPECIAL COLOR Experienced Hong Kong director Angie Chan On Kei's new film THIS DARLING LIFE achieves real love between human and dog, but because it is a small independent documentary its opening has not caught much attention and not as successful as the grand scale Japanese tear jerking drama A TALE OF MARI AND THREE PUPPIES. Chan On Kei belongs to the Hong Kong film new wave generation over 20 years ago. After returning to Hong Kong from studying abroad, in the 80s she has directed MAYBE IT'S LOVE (Lee Bik Wa written, Cherie Chung Chor Hung and Tong Chun Yip starred), MY NAME AIN'T SUZIE (Chan Koon Chung written, Pat Ha Man Jik, Deanie Yip Tak Han and Anthony Wong Chau Sun starred), and CHAOS BY DESIGN (Chung Chor Hung, Cecilia Yip Tung and Alex To Tak Wa starred). Later she switched to make television commercials and taught film at schools. THIS DARLING LIFE is not an objective documentary but a private video record with subjective emotions. Chan On Kei personally appears on camera and mourns the passing of her beloved dog of over ten years, as well as recalling with her middle age brother their childhood past of their parents passing. Aside from personal recording, she also visits several Hong Kong dog lovers, including people who passionately rescues dogs and adopts cats. They even hold funerals for their beloved dogs and show their real emotions. The most special is a homeless person who lives under a bridge. For the longest time he has only been in the company of a dog and seemed to rather enjoy it. This film's dogs are all cute and pitiable. When they age, lose their sight and die of course people's hearts ache. Even more brutal are dogs that are abused to the point of disability. Luckily they receive treatment from good hearted people. The entire film is not mainstream. Mixed with English and Cantonese and constantly adding sentimental English subtitles, the film cannot avoid being scattered and not thorough and complete enough. Fortunately it is sad but not to melodramatic. It stresses with innocent dog nature that is without grudge or hatred, that adds warmth to humanity. The director also thus forgives the father who "abandoned the family" years ago. THIS DARLING LIFE is a Hong Kong documentary that has a rare release. Although it is low budget and alternative, it has many touching parts and has the Chinese and foreign mix specialty of Hong Kong. Actually Hong Kong has many dog lovers, but they seem to only like to watch Japanese dog films. Why not support the Hong Kong product? - SHEK KEI (http://www.cultureshot.net/sekkkkeiluklei) 4. MING PAO DAILY, MAY 12 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS FILM SUBJECT CLASH Wong Kar Wai accuses Raymond Wong Pak Ming of copying his film YUT DOI JUNG SI (MASTER OF A GENERATION), which he has announced in 2002. Both films are about Wing chun master Yip Mun. Yip Mun is very famous in the martial art world, but his name is rather strange to others who are curiously why his life story would run into clashing projects. The explanation is simple -- he is Bruce Lee's mentor. Everyone knows Bruce Lee. His films have promoted Chinese martial art to the entire world. Bruce Lee created Jeet Kuen Do, but his gong fu background came from Wing Chun, which stresses power from minimal effort and later start reaching first. A story of Bruce Lee's mentor of course is very attractive. However, any real life biography adaptation like this one is not as simple as information research and creativity. Chen Kaige's MEI LANFANG has to get consent from Mei Lanfang's descendants, otherwise a lot of areas like accusation of the story twisting the truth can have problems and even possibly lawsuits. The more recent the celebrity the most caution the biography is. Historical figures would be better, but if shooting historical figure in Mainland the screenplay still has to be inspected first. Bruce Lee's story also needs his descendant's consent. Thus at Wong Pak Ming's official production start for YUT DOI JUNG SI YIP MUN were Yip Mun's descendants to show their support. The writer has heard from insiders about the film adaptation of Yip Mun's story for years, if memory serves it should have been earlier than Wong Kar Wai's 2002 public announcement. Wong Kar Wai is known for slow production. In any clash he actually is at a disadvantage. If the story is not originally created, any early announcement may not be necessarily good. In estimate this time Wong Pak Ming made the Yip Mun story first because Wong Kar Wai has made the early announcement but still has not started production five years later. Wong Kar Wai is known for slow but detailed work. Tony Leung Chiu Wai has studied Wing Chun for awhile for YUT DOI JUNG SI. From the viewer standpoint, no one would mind watch another YUT DOI JUNG SI. - KWOK HIN CHING 5. TA KUNG PAO, MAY 11 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH CO-PRODUCTION FACES BITTER WINTER THAT WORRIES FILM PROFESSIONALS In recent months, Hong Kong film has been under a cloud of sorrow. Everyone has been very pessimistic about film investment mainly because many films that were submitted for inspection at the end of last year have not received any result from the film authority and thus could not be scheduled for release. Hong Kong film's most important market is Mainland, which is already an indisputable fact. Thus most Hong Kong invested films try to co-produce with Mainland studios so they can freely distribute and retrieve return in Mainland. Yet after the earlier LOST IN BEIJING incident (different inspection and release versions) many rumors have spread. The general idea is that Mainland government will strengthen its film content inspection and will not easily approve Mainland and Hong Kong co-productions. Many co-productions that were completed at the end of last year did not receive many inspection news after the Lunar New Year, thus most Hong Kong film professionals felt that the "bitter winter" of co-production has arrived. Many films with screenplays that are waiting inspection have not been approved either and everyone's mood is even lower and at a total loss. The writer has spoken with a certain big director about this. The director feels that he would prepare to write a group of screenplays and decide the direction once the situation clears up. The writer feels that this plan is very indulgent. Big directors' salaries are high and can make a movie in several years. The average director and screen writer have to make a living, to them the situation is rather dangerous. Current Mainland film authorities have provided the Hong Kong film industry with a clear and sincere impression. The average belief is the long inspection period is due to too many accumulated films. Yet when your investment or production has not received the result after a long time, you are indeed anxious. Luckily most recently the situation is at a turning point. The film authority's assistant chief last month in Beijing expressed, "China film policy will continue to liberate thinking, innovate ideas, will not become the obstacle for others and will not reverse its policy." Actually the inspection status is gradually clearing up. For example the Jackie Chan starred THE SHINJUKU INCIDENT (SUN SHOOK SI GEIN) has already been classified as an assisted production. THE STORM RIDERS (FUNG WONG, the Pang Brothers directed) has already started production. Also, two movie screenplays YIP MUN and WITNESS have already been successfully approved. The Tsui Hark directed SUM HOI CHUM YUN has already been approved for release. However, THE FANTASTIC WATER BABES (CHOOK SHUI FU YUNG) and SNIPER (SUN CHEUNG SAU) still have no news. Yet the market is looking forward to these two released. Since assistant chief Zhang has already confirmed that the Mainland government's support and liberation of film, conceivably very soon all the accumulated film (inspection) conditions would be revealed. As for why the process has been dragging, rumors are abundant. Some even said that the Beijing Olympics has something to do with it. Ultimately film professionals care the most about the inspection result. Although uncertainty remains, once they receive their approval they would no longer examine the process for now. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2009 Can : Ga Yau Hei Si 2009 Lit : Family Has Joyous Event 2009 d. The term refers to the special dexterity needed to pluck people's wallets from their pockets...and possibly also to the necessity of having to flutter away quickly should one de discovered. Kei is one such "sparrow" -- and a very professional one at that. He and his three partners earn a good living from digging deep into the pockets of oblivious passers-by moving along the crowded urban canyons of Hong Kong. As far as Kei's concerned, it's all he needs to live a carefree life. Whenever he is not going about his business he loves to ride about the city on his bicycle photographing street scenes with his Rolleiflex camera. One day the gorgeous Chun Lei comes into his sights. Kei is fascinated but behind Chun Lei's good looks lurks a mysterious past. Kei falls in love with her -- and he is not the only one. After having managed to turn the heads of his three colleagues, she reveals her true intentions. The sparrows are to steal a key that is of great importance to her. At first the task seems simple, but then another interested party appears on the scene in shape of the shy tycoon Mr. Yen......
